THIS WEEK'S GAMES: After closing the regular season with two wins over UW-Whitewater, the Blue Devils (3-5, -5 WIAC) will turn their attention to the WIAC Championship tournament by traveling to UW-Oshkosh, Monday, March 1. Oshkosh was ranked 11th in the Feb. 22 D3hoops.com poll. The winner will play in the second round of the WIAC Championship, Wednesday, March 3. The championship game is Friday, March 5. Stout has not participated in the WIAC Championship tournament since 2017 when they were the sixth seeded team.
2020-21 SEASON: The COVID-19 pandemic forced all sports to rethink their schedule and WIAC basketball will have eight regular season games, which will only be against conference opponents, plus a conference tournament. The conference has been divided into two divisions, and East and West. The teams in each division will meet twice during the shortened regular season, all in the same week with games on Wednesdays and Fridays. Stout is in the West Division along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls and UW-La Crosse. There will two games against a crossover opponent, and Stout will play UW-Whitewater twice. The conference tournament is scheduled to be held the first week of March, with the first round Monday, March 1, the second round Wednesday, March 3 and the championship game Friday, March 5. All tournament games will be played at the high seed. No fans will be allowed during the 2020-21 season.
BACK-TO-BACK: Before this COVID-schedule season, it was rare, but not unheard of for UW-Stout teams to play back-to-back games against the same opponent in the course of a season. Before this season, the phenomenon occurred 16 times - and it happened twice during two single seasons. The latest time it happened was during the 2006-07 season when Stout closed out the regular season with UW-La Crosse, then turned around and played the Eagles in the first round of the tournament. They lost both games. During the 1969-70 season, Stout closed out the regular season with UW-Stevens Point, then played the Pointers in the first round of the NAIA District 14 tournament. Stout won both games. Listed below is all of the instances Stout played back-to-back games and their opponents.
