About Our Team

Our sports medicine team is comprised of a general physician, dietitian, orthopedic surgeon and two full time state-licensed athletic trainers and includes three part time Licensed Athletic Trainers (LAT) that outreach from Mayo Health system to help provide coverage for UW-Stout Athletics. Our staff is responsible for the safety and healthcare of approximately 450-500 student-athletes at UW-Stout competing in NCAA Division III sports. Our team works with a variety of healthcare providers in Menomonie and the Chippewa Valley area to provide the best possible care to our athletes. We also work closely with our Student Health Center and counseling Center on campus to provide on campus care.

UW-Stout Sports Medicine Medical Policy
Responsibilities of the General Physician and Orthopedic Team Physicians: Decisions regarding the medical readiness for athletic participation are the responsibility of the team physician or his/her designee, usually the athletic trainer. The team physician will do the following: diagnose and treat illness; diagnose and direct injury treatment management; disqualify injured and/or ill athletes from participation; determine when injured and/or ill athletes return to full participation; and promote and maintain consistently high standards for the health care of athletes. The team physician is the authority of either approving or disapproving participation for injured and/or ill athletes. The team physician holds the final clearance decision, regardless of other physician's notes, opinions or clearance.

Responsibilities of the Licensed Athletic Trainers (LAT): Decisions regarding the health and safety for athletic participation are the responsibility of the athletic trainers or their designee, graduate and undergraduate student assistants, under the supervision of the team physician.

The LATs will do the following: establish injury and illness prevention programs; evaluate and provide immediate care for injury and/or illness; rehabilitate and recondition athletic injuries; provide education and counseling as related to injury and/or illness; and health care administration. The LATs are the first contact for athletes regarding daily management of athletically related injuries.

Responsibility of the Student-Athlete: Athletes report all injury/illness to the Licensed Athletic Trainer providing athletic training services for their sport as early as possible each day. Athletes will be required to follow the directions given to them by the team physician and athletic trainers regarding injury/illness. Athletes should freely communicate their health care needs to the LATs.
