Soccer Preview: Blue Devils face quick turnaround, travel to Bethel Tuesday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (1-5-1, 0-0-0 WIAC) play a pair of non-conference games this week and will turn their attention to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foes Bethel University (1-2-1, 0-1-0 MIAC) and Macalester College (4-2-2, 1-1-0 MIAC). Stout will travel to Bethel Tuesday, Sept. 20 for a 4 p.m. meeting with the Royals, then will be home Saturday, Sept. 25 for a 2 p.m. showdown with the Scots. 

Stout finished the 2021 season with their best record since 2011 season at 11-8-1, 3-4-0 WIAC. Stout made their first trip to the WIAC Championship tournament since the 2017 season, but lost to UW-Stevens Point, 4-1. 

ON-LINE: All of Stout's home games are expected to be available in a live video stream and in live stats

PARKING: Parking on the UW-Stout campus is restricted during the business week. For games at Nelson Field during the week, please plan to park in Lot 29, which is located adjacent to Nelson Field. Do not park in Lot 4, which is a reserved lot for students that live in the residence halls.

PETS: While service animals are welcome, no pets are allowed at UW-Stout athletic events.


THE BLUE DEVILS PREVIEW:  Stout opens up the 2022 season with a 1-3-1 record. Julie McNamar has played in six games in goal. McNamar has allowed six goals and recorded one shut out.  On the offensive side of the ball, Caylee Boone leads the team in points with her two goals. Marissa Steele and Liv WInkler are the other Blue Devils who have found the back of the net. Both of these goals came against St. Norbert. A LOOK BACK AT THE 2021 BLUE DEVILS: Stout had one of their best seasons in recent memory scoring an average of 1.55 goals per game while only allowing 1.20. The Blue Devils played a clean and strong defensive game, Stout recorded six shutouts in the 2021 season and only received one yellow card. . | 2021 Statistics

THE BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT:  Non-conference action on a rainy Friday night saw 32 Blue Devils on the field throughout the course of the game. UW-Stout matched-up against the Viterbo V-Hawks on  Sept. 16 at Nelson Field. The V-Hawks came out on top, defeating Stout 2-0. | Viterbo Game Story and Stats | The Blue Devils suffered their third one-point loss of the season against the College of Saint Benedict on Sunday night. WIAC PRESEASON POLL: The Blue Devils were picked to finish sixth in the WIAC, according to a preseason poll by league coaches and sports information directors.


A LOOK AT BETHEL UNIVERSITY: Five different Royals have picked up goals in Bethel's four games. Leading the way is Junior Sonia Meyer, who has two goals. Following her are Bella Heckman, Malia Belby, Kelsey Bergan, and Aly Gramstad, who all have one goal each. Kaia Kennedy is the lone Royal with an assist so far this year. On the defensive end, Abby Swanda and Ashley Hansen have picked up the most minutes. Bethel has featured two keepers so far this season, each getting two full games. Sophomore Kate Green has made seven saves while allowing eight goals, six of these goals came against UW-Oshkosh. Junior Izzy Smith has allowed two goals, recording 15 saves. As a team, the Royals have been outshot by opponents in their last three games, giving up 23 shots to Oshkosh, 12 to Dubuque, and 16 to St. Olaf. |  2022 Statistics

BETHEL LAST TIME OUT:  The Royals were scheduled to host Northland College, Sept. 17, but that game was canceled.  Bethel fell short in a 2-1 loss to St.Olaf at Rolf Mellby Field on Sept. 14. BU's Sonia Meyer with the lone goal  for the Royals in the 78th minute. Bella Woog of the Oles scored in the 33rd minute and Sadie Klaussen utilized the momentum to score just seven minutes later.  |  Game Story and Statistics

THE LAST TIME BETHEL AND STOUT MET:  UW-Stout's Liv Winkler scored her fifth goal of the season and Lauren Chukel scored her first collegiate goal as the Blue Devils captured their sixth shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over Bethel University Oct. 6, 2021, at Nelson Field. The Blue Devils pretty much controlled the entire field from the get-go, outshooting Bethel 15-3 overall and 8-3 on net. THE SERIES: The Blue Devils lead the all-time series 7-5-0. Over the last five meetings, Stout has won one game, Bethel two and the teams have tied twice. |  History



A LOOK AT MACALESTER COLLEGE: The 4-2-2 Scots are led by Mia Brisbin, who has scored three goals so far this season. Two of Brisbin's goals came in the season opener against Northland on September 1. Lucy Gorchulska and Ella Thomsen are behind Brisbin with two goals each. Julia Kispert and Ella Short each have one goal and two assists. Their assists are matched with teammates Rachel Colson and Celia Lesmeister. Out of the Scot's 12 goals, 11 of them have been assisted. Jocelyn Radke and Ashlyn Ryan have shared time in net. Radke has recorded 16 saves and 10 goals, posting a 1-2 record. Ryan, in five appearances has yet to allow a goal, making 13 saves and recording a 4-0-2 record. Ryan has recorded four shut outs, she is helped out by the Scot's defense, led by Lily Lorenzen and Kat Ellerd, both who have seen more than 600 minutes of field time. As a team, the Scots are outshooting their opponents 131 to 75. 52 of those shots have been on net. |  2022 Statistics

MACALESTER LAST TIME OUT: Macalester will travel to play St. Olaf on Saturday, September 23 before coming to Nelson Field on Sunday to face the Blue Devils. On Sunday, September 18, Macalester College women's soccer team traveled to Iowa to take on the Wartburg Knights. Wartburg won the game, 6-0.  |  Game Story and Statistics

THE LAST TIME MACALESTER AND STOUT MET:   Macalester College scored in the 59th minute and hung on to hand UW-Stout their first loss of the season, a 1-0 decision Sept. 18, 2021, at Nelson Field. After a scoreless first half, Macalester hit the Blue Devils when Ella Thomsen took a pass from Abby Ecker to light the lamp for the only time in the game.  Stout had some late opportunities, forcing a couple of corner kicks in the final four minutes of the, but could not tickle the twine for the first time this season.  |  Game Story and Stats

AWARDS: 2021: Marissa Steele was selected to the All-WIAC Conference team along with earning All-Region honors...Hailey Kane also made an appearance on the All-WIAC team for her work in the 2021 season...Marissa Steele was the WIAC/Kwik Trip athlete of the week and the UW-Stout athlete of the week, Sept. 14, after scoring two game winning goals against St. Scholastica and Cornell College...Liv Winkler was the UW-Stout athlete of the week after scoring a goal in each of the first two games of the season, including the game winner in the season opener against Concordia-Moorhead.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Blue Devil team captains for the 2022 season are Caylee Boone, Marissa Steele, Rachel Younker and Julia McNamar.

UW-STOUT COACH RYAN RAUFUS: Coach Ryan Raufus (72-98-21) is in his 12th year as the head coach of the Blue Devils in 2022. Raufus played his college ball at Springfield College in Massachusetts and came to Stout after coaching at La Crosse Logan High School and La Crescent, Minn., High School. 


DOWN THE ROAD: The Blue Devils will host Luther College, Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m., then will open the conference schedule when they travel to UW-Platteville, Saturday, Oct. 1 for a 3 p.m. contest.
