Blue Devils can't find way past keeper in 1-0 loss to St. Benedict

Stout had eight shots, six of them on target, but none found their way to the back of the net

UW-Stout 0, Saint Benedict 1

MENOMONIE (September 18, 2022) - The Blue Devils suffered their third one-point loss of the season against the College of Saint Benedict on Sunday night. Six of the eight shots from Stout were on target, but none of them found the back of the net.

Both teams started off the game strong defensively, not allowing the other team much time inside the attacking zone. Stout (1-5-1) saw two good looks at goal, but both were stopped by the starting goalie for Saint Benedict, Paige Kahlmeyer. Kahlmeyer finished the first half with two saves. Saint Benedict (4-3-0) had eight shots in the first half, four on goal. Julia McNamar made four saves, some diving, before subbing out for Lily Shield. Shield finished up the first half for the Blue Devils and played the entire second half in goal.

Saint Benedict struck early on in the second half, Abby Willenbring found the back of the net from well outside the goalie box to put the Blazer's on the board. Saint Benedict would keep up the attack, recording 12 shots in the second half alone, eight on goal. Lily Shield made all seven of her saves in that second half.

The Blue Devils tried to tie the game, getting four looks on goal in the second half, but Blazer's goalie Annie Waters stopped them all. Liv Winkler had two shots on goal for the Blue Devils. Kate Holst, in her first start had one, along with Carly Kauffman, Marissa Steele, and Lauren Chukel.

As a team, Stout was out-shot by the Blazers 20 to 8. The Blazers also led the possession game, controlling the ball for 53-percent of the game.

Stout will get a quick rest before heading out on the read to face Bethel University on Tuesday, September 20 at 4 pm. The Blue Devils will return home next Sunday (September 25) to take on Macalaster. The game is set to start at 2 pm at Nelson Field.
