Baseball Preview: Blue Devils to host Blugolds in four-game series this weekend at River Falls, first pitch each day is now 11 a.m.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES LOCATION HAS CHANGED:  UW-Stout (9-5, 4-0 WIAC) hosts UW-Eau Claire (6-6, 1-1 WIAC) at First National Bank of River Falls Field, Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3. A change in the start time has also been made. Both days will now begin at 11 a.m. with the 9-inning doubleheader series. Weather conditions have left Nelson Field unplayable. 

The Blue Devils have yet to host the Blugolds at Nelson Field since Eau Claire returned to varsity status last season. The teams met six times last season, with Stout winning all six contests. The four games designated as home games for Stout were played at the First National Bank of River Falls Field.

The Blue Devils are coming off a four-game sweep over UW-Platteville Monday (7-5, 13-5) and Tuesday (7-3 16-5), while the Blugolds split with UW-Oshkosh Tuesday (L 6-3, W 3-0).


PETS: While service animals are allowed, no pets are allowed at UW-Stout athletic events.

UW-STOUT: Joel Thimsen, Jack Schirpke and Charlie Szykowny have been wielding the hot bats for the Blue Devils this season and Stout leads the WIAC in team batting average at .334. Thimsen is hitting at a .500 clip, going 24-48 with 17 runs scored, six doubles, a triple, a home run, and 25 RBI. Schirpke is hitting .447 (21-47) with 15 runs scored, five doubles, two home runs and 21 RBI. Szykowny is hitting .415 (27-65) with 20 runs scored, seven doubles, three triples, five home runs and a team-best 26 RBI. Szykowny has stolen six bases and Thimsen four. TJ Carlson is hitting .400 (6-15), Colin Hageman.360 (18-50), Jacob Endreas .341 (14-41) and Paul Weise .333 (8-24). Szykowny and Thimsen each have a 15 game hitting streak, going back to the final game of the 2021 season. Schirpke has hit safely in 10 straight games. 

SZYKOWNY'S START: Charlie Szykowny overcame a 1 for 7 start at the plate in the team's doubleheader loss to Bethel University, March 8 and has been on a hot streak ever since. The Blue Devil shortstop is on a 15-game hitting streak and had one streak where he hit a home run in five consecutive games. Szykowny is hitting .415 and has a slugging percentage of .846.  Szykowny has also gone to the mound from his shortstop spot.  Szykowny recorded a save against Bethel in the first game of the team's spring break trip to Florida and recorded his first collegiate win, pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless ball, allowing two hits and striking out four in an 11-9 win, 10-inning win over the US Merchant Marines Academy on the last day of the spring break trip. For the season, Szykowny is hitting .455 with six doubles, one triple and five home runs with 18 RBI.  Szykowny was named the WIAC position player of the week and was selected as the NCBWA honorable mention hitter of the hitter of the week.  

SCHIRPKE JUST AS HOT: Schirpke overcame a slow start and is now hitting .447 with five doubles, two home runs and 21 RBI. Twice this season Schirpke has collected six RBI in a single game - against St. Michael when he went 3 for 5 with a home run and against the Merchant Marines when he went 4 for 4 with two doubles and a home run. 

STEADY THIMSEN: Joel Thimsen has been hitting around the .500 mark throughout the season and only once dipped as low as .462 after the first game of the season. Thimsen has hit six doubles, a triple, a home run and 25 RBI. Thimsen has driven in at least one run in 12 of 14 games. Thimsen has been particularly effective with runners in scoring position, hitting .577 (15-26) with runners on second or third. With runners on third and less than two outs, Thimsen is hitting .875 (7-8) and has lifted three sacrifice flies. With two outs, Thimsen has driven in 15 runs. Szykowny is right behind Thimsen, driving 14 runs with two outs. 

BLUE DEVIL PITCHING: Jace Baumann (4.19 ERA, 19.1 IP, 13K), Cody Urban (7.78 ERA, 19.2 IP, 10K), Drew Buss (7.71 ERA, 11.2 IP, 12 K), Ethan Kjellberg (6.23 ERA, 13.0 IP, 9K) and Cooper Beving (3.00 ERA, 6.0 IP, 2K) have drawn the majority of the starts on the mound. Dak Doyle (0.00 ERA, 6.1 IP, 5K) and Szykowny (0.00 ERA, 3.1 IP, 5K) each have a win and a save. Luke Kallod notched his first career save Monday against Platteville.

WIAC PRESEASON POLL:   UW-Stout is picked to finish fifth in the 2022 preseason poll. UW-Whitewater is first, UW-Stevens Point second, UW-La Crosse third, UW-Oshkosh fourth, UW-Platteville sixth, UW-Eau Claire seventh, and Finlandia eighth


SCOUTING UW-EAU CLAIRE: Otto Treichel leads the Blugolds at the plate, hitting a .325 clip, going 13-40 with five doubles, one home run and a team-best 12 RBI. Nate Witte is hitting .313, going 15-49 with three doubles, a triple, one home run and nine RBI. The sophomore outfielder leads the team in stolen bases with eight in nine attempts. Diego Caicedo has six stolen bases and Ryan Venne four. Matt Moore and Xavier Estrada both pitched Tuesday. Moore has made four starts, is 1-2 overall and has an ERA of 4.42. Moore has a team-best 17 strikeouts. Estrada is 2-1 with 15 strikeouts and an ERA of 6.10. The Blugolds have gotten starts from Charley Griffen (9.77 ERA, 15.2 IP, 13K), Justin Coronado (8.10 ERA, 3.1 IP, 5K), Nico Smith (7.36 ERA, 11.0 IP, 5K), and Anthony Scimone (2.45 ERA, 14.2 IP, 11K). LAST TIME OUT:  The Blugolds split a doubleheader with UW-Oshkosh Tuesday that was played in Ashwaubenon. Oshkosh captured the opening game, 6-3, but the Blugolds captured a 3-0 win in the second, the program's first complete shutout since the program was reinstated last year. Matt Moore pitched his first collegiate shutout, striking out 11 and allowing three walks. The Titans touched Moore for five hits as the sophomore went the distance. Both teams were scoreless until the Blugolds scored in the top of the sixth when Andrew Murphy lifted a bases loaded sacrifice fly. Eau Claire scored again in the seventh on an RBI single by Chase Yaeger and Murphy scored his second sacrifice fly of the day in the eighth inning to close out the scoring. In the opener, the Titans scored four runs in the bottom of the first, then added another in the fifth. Eau Claire pulled to within 5-3 with a three-run sixth inning on an RBI single by Nate Witte and a two-run home run by Otto Treichel. | Games and Statistics

LAST TIME THEY MET: The Blue Devils won all six meetings last year in the Blugolds' first year returning to varsity status since the 1990s. Stout won 3-1, 13-3 (7 inn) in the first meeting, March 27 in River Falls. The April 6 doubleheader was scheduled at Carson Park, but the first game was halted due to weather and completed on April 10, with Stout taking an 11-3 win. The second game of the day was a tight contest with the Blue Devils taking the 5-4 win in the 10th inning on a Ryan Herbst home run. The teams clashed on April 9 in River Falls with Stout taking a 22-3 seven inning win and a 10-3 second game win. Of the six games played last year between the two teams, five of them were played at least partially in the rain. AWARDS AND HONORS: 2022: Charlie Szykowny was named the WIAC/Kwik Trip position player of the week and the NCBWA honorable mention hitter of the week after driving in 18 runs and hitting five home runs during Stout's Florida.


COACHES: Ben Kincaid (74-96) is in his sixth year as the Blue Devils' head coach with the 2022 season, following two years as a Blue Devil assistant coach where he worked primarily with the pitchers. Kincaid played collegiately at at Minnesota State University-Mankato, where he was a four year letter winner, playing in 149 games. He finished with a .339 batting average, 38 doubles (5th on MSU's career list), six home runs and 140 runs batted in (6th on MSU's career list). As a right-handed pitcher he sported a 14-8 record with a 3.45 earned run average and had 148 strikeouts in 172 innings pitched. Kincaid was named to the All-Central Region team three times in his career. An Eau Claire native, Kincaid played for the local Eau Claire Express. (Ben Kincaid was 65-91 to start 2022 season)


2021 BLUE DEVILS: Stout finished the 2021 season at 23-19 overall, 16-12 in the WIAC, and advanced to the WIAC tournament, where they played four games, heading into the final day of the tournament. | 2021 Statistics

DOWN THE ROAD:  The Blue Devils are scheduled to travel to UW-Oshkosh for a weekend series with the Titans, Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10.
