MAUSTON (March 28, 2022) - UW-Stout used big innings in both games and had solid relief pitching to record a sweep in the team's conference opening doubleheader against UW-Platteville Monday at Woodside Sports Complex. The Blue Devils won the first game 7-5 using a four-run third inning to hold off the Pioneers and a popped out six runs in the eighth inning of the second game for a 13-5 win.
In the opener, the Blue Devils'
Jace Baumann struck out four to pick up the win,
Dak Doyle pitched two scoreless innings to nab the save and Stout (7-5, 2-0 WIAC) overcame six errors to post the conference-opening win.
The Pioneers (2-6, 0-2 WIAC) found the scoreboard first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Stout answered back with four runs in the third inning.
Levi Wilson opened the inning with a hit and the Blue Devils went on to load the bases on a walk by
Joel Thimsen and an infield single by
Jacoby Endreas.
Jack Schirpke extened his hitting streak to seven games with a three-run double, then came home on a double by
Paul Weise.
The Pioneers scored in the fourth and Stout scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Weise drove in his second run of the game in the fifth and
Charlie Szykowny extended his hitting streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 12 games (stretching back to last season) with an RBI single down the right field line.
Baumann held the Pioneers to two runs over the first six innings, but surrendered three runs in the seventh on two hits and Stout led 6-5. Doyle entered in the eighth, recording a ground out, a foul fly out and got the third batter on a strikeout. Stout picked up an insurance run to take a two-run lead when Schirpke hit his second double of the game to drive home
Joel Thimsen, who reached on a lead off single. Doyle went back to work, but walked the first batter in the bottom of the ninth, then recorded three consecutive outs - a strike out, a groundout and a strike out to end the game.
Doyle recorded his first collegiate save by striking out three and walking one in eight batters faced. One hitter reached safely on an error in the eighth inning. Baumann went seven innings, giving up seven hits, five runs, four runs earned, walked two and struck out four.
Schirpke was 3 for 5 with four RBI. Weise was 2 for 4 with two RBI. Endreas was 2 for 4. Stout finished with 11 hits, while the Pioneers had seven hits. Jordan Collins was 2 for 4 for Platteville with an RBI. Jake Wegner was 1 for 5 with a two-run double in the seventh. Dillon Sunnquist also drove in a run.
In the second game, Stout was able to take advantage of Pioneer errors as the Blue Devils scored three runs in the first inning as Szykowny and Thimsen scored assisted by errors. Schirpke kept the hot bat and drove in Endreas with a double to push Stout to a 3-0 lead. Thimsen drove in two runs in the third inning with a double to give Stout a 5-0 lead.
Platteville scored one run in the third, then tied the score with four runs in the fifth.
Stout took the lead back when
Colin Hageman smashed a two-run double in the seventh inning to take the lead back, 7-5.
Luke Kallod came on with two outs and a runner on first base in the bottom of the seventh as Platteville threatened, but Kallod forced a flyout to left field to get out of the inning.
Stout exploded in the eighth inning for six runs. Szykowny drove in a run with single to center and, with two outs, Endreas tripled in two runs. Endreas scored on an infield error. Weise sliced in a run and Hageman, who had been hit by a pitch to reach base, scored on error when an outfielder misplayed Weise's hit.
Kallod finished out the game, picking up his first collegiate save, allowing a hit in both the eighth and the ninth, but did not allow a runner past second base. Quinton Gonzales picked up the win in relief, pitching two innings, allowing one hit and two walks and striking out two.
Eight of Stout's nine batters recorded at least one hit, with Szykowny going 3 for 6 with an RBI. Endreas was 3 for 5 with two RBI and Hageman was 3 for 4 with two RBI as Stout slashed 15 hits.
Stout's four pitchers allowed eight hits and one earned run, striking out nine. Starting pitcher
Drew Buss had four strikeouts.
The teams are scheduled to play again Tuesday, March 29.
