UW-Stout 5, UW-Eau Claire 4 (10 inn)
EAU CLAIRE (April 10, 2021) - Going into the seventh inning of a halted game from Tuesday with a 7-1 lead, UW-Stout added three runs in the top of the seventh and went on to an 11-3 win over UW-Eau Claire Saturday at Carson Park, then had to sweat out a 5-4, 10-inning win as
Ryan Herbst lifted a home run in the 10th.
The second game of the day was somewhat reminiscent of the Blue Devils and the Blugolds first meeting of the season when Stout took a 3-1 win in March. The Blugolds scored the opening run of the game when Logan Matson drove in Nate Witte in the third inning. Stout tied the score when
Hunter Merrill hit a solo home run in the fourth, but that's where the similarities end.
The Blugolds (0-14, 0-8 WIAC) took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth when Anthony Pogodzinski homered and Johnny Pecora doubled in a run.
Stout (8-6, 5-3 WIAC) the lead in the fifth inning.
Hunter Merrill hit a two-run double to right center, driving in
Alex Jinkins and
Charlie Szykowny to tie the score and
Drew Ries gave Stout a 4-3 lead when he plated Merrill on a single to right field. But the Blugolds used the long ball to tie the score at 4 apiece when Witte hit a home run.
Herbst's first collegiate home run came with one out.
Alex Mahaz came on in relief of
Cody Urban to earn the win, pitching 2.2 innings, striking out three and allowing one hit. Urban went 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits, striking out two and four runs, three earned.
Trevor Miller pitched the final inning, giving up a hit and adding some drama when a wild pitch allowed the runner to second. Miller got the final out, a well hit ball to center field, to earn the save.
The halfted game began Tuesday, April 6, in Eau Claire, but thunderstorms and lighting forced the postponement of the end of the game until Saturday.
Jack Schirpke drove in a run with a single to center field,
Colin Hageman hit a run scoring single and
Charlie Szykowny drew a walk with bases loaded as Stout built a 10-1 lead. The Blugolds scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh and Stout got that run back in the eighth when Schirpke drove in his second run of the game. Eau Claire added a run in the eighth.
Stout recorded 14 hits to Eau Claire's 11. Szykowny was 2 for 3 with three RBI and a home run.
Riley Boushack was 2 for 4, Hageman was 3 for 5 with two RBI,
Hunter Merrill was 2 for 5 with two RBI and Schirpke was 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs. The Blugolds' Logan Matson was 4 for 5.

On Tuesday, Stout jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by
Kasey Bass and a two run home run by
Hunter Merrill. The Blugolds' Anthony Pogodzinski drove in a run in the bottom of the first.
Charlie Szykowny accounted four Stout's next two runs, scoring
Colin Hageman on a sacrifice fly in the second and solo home run in the fifth inning. Hageman drove in
Nolan Harke in the sixth with a double, then came home on
Riley Boushack's single to center field.
Jace Baumann started for the Blue Devils, going three innings before giving way to
Reece Lucas in the fourth. Jake Fischer lasted only two-thirds of an inning for the Blugolds and was relieved by Wes Brand.
