Blue Devils complete four game conference sweep over Pioneers

UW-Stout 7, UW-Platteville 3 | UW-Stout 16, UW-Platteville 5 (7 inn)

MAUSTON (March 29, 2022) - Joel Thimsen had the hot bat and led UW-Stout to two wins over conference foe UW-Platteville as the Blue Devils completed the four-game sweep with 7-3, 16-5, wins over the Pioneers at Woodside Sports Complex.

For the day, Thimsen went 6 for 8 with six RBI at the plate, extending his hitting streak to 14 games, but the Blue Devils' third baseman also finished the day with three stolen bases in three attempts. Thimsen was particularly effective with runners on base in game two, getting six RBI - and collected three RBI in two at-bats during Stout's eight-run fifth inning. The eight run outburst put the Blue Devils up 12-5. Stout finished the game off with a four-run seventh inning to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Stout (9-5, 4-0 WIAC) did trail 2-0 going into the third inning of the second game when Thimsen blasted his first home run of the season, a three-run shot. The Pioneers came back to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third. Stout tied the game in the fourth after Charlie Szykowny led off the inning with a triple and came home on Thimsen's RBI single.

Platteville regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a lead-off home run by Ross Kristi, but that would be the end of Platteville's scoring as relief pitcher Ethan Kjellberg did not allow a run the rest of the way and picked up his second win of the season by striking out four and allowing only one run.

Thimsen was 3 for 5 with a career-best six RBI. Szykowny was 2 for 5 with three RBI. Drew Ries was 1 for 4, but plated three runs. Ries was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth and drove in two runs in the seventh on a single to right center.

In the opener, Jack Schirpke put Stout on the board in the first inning, hitting a two-run single to plate Szykowny and Thimsen. The Pioneers returned the honors with two runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the score.

Stout shot out to a 5-2 lead with a three-run second when Szykowny sliced a base-loaded triple - his third triple of the year.

The Blue Devils added two more runs in the fourth inning when Stout scored two unearned runs after two errors and two outs to take a 7-2 lead.

Platteville touched starter Cody Urban for another run in the sixth inning, but the junior captured the win by throwing seven complete innings, striking out five, scattering 10 hits, but allowed only the three runs. Four of Urban's strikeouts were the final out of the inning.

Thimsen was 3 for 5. Szykowny had three RBI and Ries was 2 for 2.

The victories extended Stout's winning streak to five games. Stout will host UW-Eau Claire Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3.
