THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (10-4, 1-2Ā WIAC) closed out the non-conference season last weekend and jump back into Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play by meeting the two teams that played in the WIAC championship game last spring. UW-Stout will host

La Crosse hosted the 2021 conference championship game, only to see Platteville carry the conference crown out of Mitchell Hall with a 74-47 decision. La Crosse is currently ranked 11th in the D3hoops.com Top 25, while the Pioneers are ranked second.

A LOOK AT THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS
- Stout has found their stride at the half-point in the season, showcasing high scoring and assist numbers. The Blue Devils are averaging 90.6 points and 19.7 assists per game. Both of these numbers are the best in the WIAC. These stats also earn a top spot on the national scale, Stout is ninth in scoring per game and seventh in assists per game.
- Sparking the high-octane UW-Stout offense are Lovell Williams at 19.1 points per game, Armani Tinsley at 13.8, Jon Ciriacks at 11.8, Luke Geiger at 10.2, Brody Fox at 9.4 and Drew Scott at 8.1. Scott is shooting 74.2 percentĀ from the floor.Ā
- For the season, Williams is averaging 19.1 points (second in the WIAC), and 6.1 assists (first in the WIAC, 19thĀ in the NCAA DIII). His 79 total assists is third in the NCAA DIII.
- The 2021-22 Blue DevilsĀ broke Stout's single game scoring record which had been held since 1971 (the 1986 team tied the record). Stout defeated the visiting Greenville Panthers, a team known for their high-scoring games, 125-119. Brody Fox connected on two late game free throws to put this Blue Devil team into the record books. The next time out, the Blue Devils scored 108 points in a win over Finlandia.
- Williams has scored in double digits in 12 of 13 games, with a career-high 31 points against Buena Vista Unversity. Williams has also picked up his scoring with over 20 points in four of the past five games. Tinsley has scored in double digits nine times this year, with a season-high 30 points at Albion College. CiriacksĀ has scored in double digits in nine games as well with a season-high of 20 points twice, vs. Northland College and Alma College. Geiger has also scored in double digits sixĀ times this year, with a season-high of 19 points.
- The Blue Devils have opened the season with 10 wins in the first 13 games, the first time they have done that since the 2016-17 season when they opened at 8-2 over the first 10Ā games and opened at 11-2 before finishing the season at 13-13.Ā
- The 57 points that Lakeland scored Dec. 6Ā is the fewest points allowed in a single game by Stout this year and the fewest points allowed in a single game since Dec. 14, 2018, when Stout defeated Finlandia, 69-56, in Hancock, Mich. It's also the fewest points allowed in Johnson Fieldhouse since Jan. 17, 2018, when Stout defeated UW-Eau Claire, 65-51. Stout scored 50 points against Lakeland in the first half, the first time Stout has had a 50 point first half since scoringĀ 51 points againstĀ Edgewood College in 2019 at the St. Norbert Tournament. The last time Stout scored 50 or more first half points in Johnson Fieldhouse was in 2018 with a 96-94 win against Silver Lake College.
- Williams scored 25 points against Albion University, then beat that the next time out with a 31-point effort, the most individual points scored by a Blue Devil sinceĀ Luke GeigerĀ scored 31 points Nov. 19, 2019.Ā Williams is currently second in the WIAC in scoring. But as much as Williams likes to score, he also likes to contribute to his teammates' scoring and is first in the WIAC in assists, averaging 6.1 per game. Williams had a career-best 14 assists against Greenville.
CLIMBING THE LADDER
- BothĀ Jon CiriacksĀ andĀ Luke GeigerĀ are making their way up the UW-Stout all-time scoring list. Ciriacks is currently 28th on the list, with 964Ā points, while Geiger is 32nd with 912Ā career points. Ciriacks is currentlyĀ 11th on the 3-point made list with 129Ā and Geiger is not far behind with 116 treys, ranking 13th. Ciriacks is 24th on the all-time rebounds list with 437.
THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS IN PREVIEWĀ
- The Blue Devils return startersĀ guardĀ Armani Tinsley, last year's leading scorer,Ā forwardĀ TYreese Alexander, guard Luke Geiger and post Drew Scott.Ā Ā
- In addition, the Blue Devils returnĀ forwardĀ Jon Ciriacks, who missed five of the nine games last season due to injuryĀ and hadĀ been a starter the previousĀ twoĀ yearsĀ Ā
- Tinsley and AlexanderĀ were WIAC honorable mention picks last season andĀ CiriacksĀ is a two-time WIAC honorable mention choice.Ā Ā
- TinsleyĀ scored in double-digits inĀ all nineĀ gamesĀ andĀ was the team's leading 3-point shooter, drainingĀ 24 shots from downtown.āÆAlexander finished his second season with the Blue Devils by averaging 8.8 points and matchedĀ Geiger withĀ a team-best 4.9 rebounds.Ā Ā
- Ciriacks, Geiger, Alexander and Tinsley have been with the program the longestĀ and they will provide the foundation for the team this season.Ā CiriacksĀ and Geiger are in their fifth year with the program and Alexander and TinsleyĀ begin their third seasons in Menomonie.
- In limited action last season,Ā Ciriacks, who was injured in the second game and only played in four games, averaged 13.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and continued to step outside to drain 8 of 16 3-pointers. Geiger averaged 10.9 points and hit 14 3-pointers.Ā Scott averaged 16 minutes on the court and pulled down 3.6 rebounds per contest in his first year as a Blue Devil.Ā
- Point guardĀ Lovell Williams, the WIAC newcomer of the year last season, will be a key cog to the Blue Devils' season.Ā Ā Williams averaged 12.0 points per contest, shooting 39 of 76 field goals, shooting 51.3 percent, andĀ 18 of 33 3-point shots for a 54.5 percent success range from beyond the arc.Ā Ā
- Forward Brody Fox returns after seeing action in all nine games andĀ pointĀ guard Kyle Williams returnedĀ last seasonĀ after a year off, beginning his third season with the Blue Devils.Ā
- Carson Moe, Preston Briggs, Nick Jungel, Jackson NollĀ and Cory HoglundĀ saw limited action last seasonĀ and Lake expects each to make contributions to the team this year.Ā Ā

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- The Blue Devils split their games at the UW-Oshkosh Winter Classic. Defeating Ripon 76-49, but falling to Calvin 97-88.
- UW-Stout put the clamps on Ripon College in the second half and went on to down the Red Hawks, 76-49, Wednesday at the BSN Winter Classic hosted by UW-Oshkosh at the Oshkosh Arena. Stout (10-2) put the proverbial lid on the Ripon basket in the second half, allowing the Red Hawks (7-4) only five second half field goals, of which two were 3-pointers. After shooting 52.0 percent (13-25) in the second half, Stout allowed Ripon to shoot a paltry 18.5 percent (5-27) after halftime. The 49 points by Ripon were the fewest points allowed by Stout this season and the fewest a Stout team has allowed since Jan. 29, 2014, when Stout defeated UW-River Falls, 67-48. Game Story and Stats
- Calvin College made a run at UW-Stout late in the first half and kept running through the second half to hand the Blue Devils only their second loss in the month of December with a 97-88 decision on the second day of the BSN Winter Classic at Oshkosh Arena. Stout (10-3) led 56-41 with 1:40 left in the first half when Calvin (7-4) scored 12 straight points into the second half and held Stout scoreless to pull to within 56-53 one minute into the second half. Stout held onto the lead until the midway point of the second half when the Knights grabbed a 72-71 lead. The Blue Devils twice captured the lead, but the Knights managed to tie the score both times, then took the lead for good at 78-77 with 4:59 remaining. SCOUTING UW-LA CROSSE:
- UW-La Crosse (9-2, 0-2) has been highlighted by Ethan Anderson's skills. Anderson has taken 161 of the Eagles 647 shots, connecting on 82 of them for 18.6 points per game, which gives him third place in the WIAC for scoring. Anderson has also been big on rebounds, pulling down 4.8 per game. Sean Suchomel and Wyatt Cook are averaging 6.1 rebounds and 5.7 rebounds respectively. Suchomel is leading the team in assists with 4.4 per game.
- As a team, the Eagles are shooting 46.8-percent from the field, but are holding opponents to a 39.0-percent from the field, second-best in the WIAC. The Eagles are currently ranked ninth on the latest Top 25 poll of d3hoops.com/
- The Eagles have already experienced two overtime games this season. They came out on top against Ripon and Augsburg. Both of these games had the final score of 75-74.

THE EAGLES LAST TIME OUT:
- The Eagles have had two of their past 3 games postponed. They won their last game against Crown College, 67-43, on December 18, 2021.
- The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team, ranked ninth on D3hoops.com, earned a 67-43 victory at Crown College (Minn.) Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 9-2 while the Storm drop to 5-6. In the second-ever meeting between the two teams, UWL took a 4-2 lead on Ethan Anderson's jumper, but Crown (Minn.) scored the next seven points to lead 9-4 on Seth Royston's layup. The Eagles trailed, 13-10, with 10:58 left in the opening half when the Storm went on a 7-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 20-12 with Cade Neubert's layup with 9:44 remaining. UWL responded with an 8-0 run of its own to force a 20-20 tie with 4:18 left on Anderson's layup. Crown (Minn.) scored the game's nex four points for a 24-20 advantage, but another 8-0 run by the Eagles gave UWL a 28-24 lead with 3:27 remaining in the first half. WHEN LA CROSSE AND STOUT LAST MET:
- La Crosse took both games last year over Stout, with a 84-62 win on February 17 and a 92-75 win on February 19.
- UW-Stout made a run at UW-La Crosse to open the second half, but it wouldn't be enough as the Eagles went on to an 84-62 win Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse. La Crosse (4-1, 4-1 WIAC) held a 47-28 halftime lead, but Stout (1-4, 1-4 WIAC)Ā cut the lead to as close as 12 points by going on a 12-2 run to pull to within 49-37, then came as close as 11 points at 16:05. - After UW-Stout pulled to within one point, 23-22, midway through the first half, UW-La Crosse went on a 21-8 tear over the next six minutes and never looked back to hand the Blue Devils a 92-75 loss Friday at Mitchell Hall. La Crosse (5-1, 5-1 WIAC) went into halftime with a 49-30 lead and stretched that deep into 20-plus lead in the second half. SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE:
- UW-Platteville (13-0, 2-0 WIAC) pride themselves on a rounded scoring output by all five starters. Four of their five starts are averaging double digits (Quentin Shields-14.1, Kyle Tuma-13.7, Blake McCann-12.5, Logan Pearson-11.0) with the fifth, Justin Stovall with 9.9 points per game. Shields is also leading the team with assists, averaging 4.1 per game. Tuma and Stovall lead the team in rebounds with 9.5 and 7.5 respectively.
- As a team, the Pioneers are leading the WIAC in their own shooting percentage as well as defensive shooting percentage. BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played what is believed to be their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH JIM LAKE
- Jim Lake (25-48) is in his fourthĀ season in 2021-22Ā as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Lake came to Stout after 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State. The Bulldogs won the 2017-18 NCAA Division II national title. (Lake's record at the beginning of the 2021-22Ā season was 15-44)
- Lake served at Ferris State University for a total of 10 years, the last five years beginning with the 2013-14 season as the program's top assistant men's basketball coach. Lake had served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs in two different stints over the previous decade, working as a part-time assistant coach from 2011-13 before moving up to the full-time lead position, and as a volunteer assistant coach from 2003-06.
- During five seasons as the Bulldogs' top assistant coach, Lake helped Ferris State to four consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament championships and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, culminating in a 38-1 overall record and the 2018 NCAA Division II national title with a 71-69 win over Northern State University in March.
LA CROSSE COACH KENT DERNBACH
- Kent Dernbach (54-30 at UW-La Crosse/62-35 overall) is in his fifth season as head men's basketball coach at UW-La Crosse and fifth season overall. Named head coach March 12, 2018, Dernbach served as the Eagles' interim head coach for the 2017-18 season. He is 30-23 overall and 15-13 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in his first two seasons. UWL finished 17-10 overall and 10-4 in the WIAC in 2018-19, placing second in the league standings. It was the Eagles' highest finish in the WIAC since capturing the regular-season crown in 2015-16. UWL also hosted a WIAC Tournament Semifinal in 2018-19 for the first time since 2015-16. The 17 victories in 2018-19 were the most since finishing 17-10 in 2013-14. The Eagles earned an at-large bid to the 2019 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championship under Dernbach, the team's second appearance (2006, 2019) in school history. UWL was one of 20 teams to earn an at-large bid to the national championships.
PLATTEVILLE COACH JEFF GARD
- Jeff Gard received national accolades in 2019-20 after leading the Pioneers to a 23-5 record, a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, and a third straight trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
- Gard, who completed his 11thĀ season as the head coach, earned WIAC Coach of the Year, the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District Coach of the Year, the D3Hoops.com Central Region Coach of the Year, and the national Jack Bennett Man of the Year honor.
- The 2019-20 Pioneers finished 12-2 in the WIAC, claiming their second title in three years.Ā They were also regular-season champions in 2017-18 and were the 2018-19 WIAC post-season champions. This year's Pioneers finished the season 12thĀ in the nation.Gard has compiled a 180-116 record in his 11 years, and his 180 wins rank 20thĀ all-time in WIAC history
- Gard is known not only for his work on the court but also within the community for his generous efforts of being a servant leader.Ā Whether it be though his team's community service within the Tri-State are or his newest adventure in the fight against cancer, Gard is doing his best to assist those in need.Ā His family's most recent adventure has taken place in "Garding Against Cancer" and the "Iowa County Cancer Coalition", to help with the fight against cancer right within the state of Wisconsin. All money raised remains in Wisconsin ā working to find a cure, advance treatment options, and promote the welfare of patients
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. The Blue Devils were picked to finish seventh in a preseason poll conducted by league coaches and sports information directors.Ā UW-Platteville was projected to win the conference, with UW-Oshkosh second, UW-La Crosse third, UW-Whitewater fourth, UW-River Falls fifth, UW-Eau Claire sixth and UW-Stevens Point eighth.Ā
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
