SCOUTING UW-SUPERIOR

  • Due to COVID-19 protocols, UW-Superior saw two games canceled this season. The Yellowjackets finished last season at 16-10-3 overall, 7-8-0 in the WIAC. The Yellowjackets were eliminated from the WIAC tournament by UW-Eau Claire, 4-1, 2-0. The Yellowjackets' 2021 season has been up and down, starting off with a pair of wins over Northland, then losing single games to both UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stevens Point. Last week, the 'Jackets split with UW-River Falls, with each winning on their opponents' ice.
  • The Yellowjackets return all-conference players in Connor Hamonic, Sr., D (2018-Honorable); Dylan Johnson, So., F (2020-First/Newcomer of the Year); Lawson McDonald, Sr., D (2020-Honorable); Oscar Svensson, Sr., G (2019-First) and Troy York, Sr., F (2019-First, 2020-First)
  • The Yellowjackets have averaged 3.33 goals per contest, second in the league. They are allowing 3.00 goals, third in the WIAC. Pavel Mikhasenok leads the team in points with eight, on one goal and seven assists. Dylan Johnson (3-1-4) and Chad Lopes (3-0-3) each have three goals. Levi Cudmore (2-2-4), Will Blake (2-2-4), Artur Terchiyev (2-1-3), Coltyn Bates (2-1-3) and Ty Proffitt (2-1-3) each have two goals.

THE YELLOWJACKETS LAST TIME OUT
  • UW-Superior defeated UW-River Falls, 2-1, Feb. 24, in River Falls, and in the rematch at Superior, Feb. 26, the Falcons turned the tables with a 4-2 win.
  • The best way to sum up the Yellowjacket men's hockey season to date is probably to quote the Grateful Dead – "What a long, strange trip it's been." After getting through the first two weeks of the season unscathed, the Yellowjackets have had a game canceled each of the last two weeks due to COVID-19 protocols. It just so happened those games were supposed to be played at Wessman Arena, meaning Wednesday's contest was the third straight road game for the Yellowjackets, who were looking to put an end to a two-game losing streak. Offense was hard to come by Wednesday, as the Yellowjackets were outshot for the third straight game and only able to score twice, but they clamped down defensively and shut down the River Falls offense on the way to a 2-1 win at W.H. Hunt Arena. The victory pushed the Yellowjackets back to a game over .500 and set the stage for what should be a great rematch Friday. Last Wednesday at Stevens Point the Yellowjackets got off to a dreadful start, falling behind 2-0 before the game was five minutes old. Things were different this time around. The Yellowjackets didn't find the back of the net, but they held a big territorial advantage through the first half of the period and nearly took the lead early. As the period got along, River Falls evened play out and held a 7-5 edge in shots through 20 minutes. Tempers started to flare and the trips to the penalty box became more regular in the second, yet the game remained scoreless until late. That's when the 'Jackets broke through. On their third power play of the game, the Yellowjackets finally found rhythm, moving the puck around the offensive zone and eventually breaking through. Pavel Mikhasenok made a perfect pass from the right point to Dylan Johnson in the left circle, and Johnson caught the pass and shot all in one motion to pick up his third goal of the year at 16:37 of the period to make it 1-0. The lead increased to 2-0 in the final minute of the second. This time Will Blake (Champlin, Minn./Breck School) brought the puck into the River Falls zone on the right wing, and from the top of the right circle took a wrist shot that got past River Falls' goaltender Dean Buchholtz. The goal came at 19:12 and the 'Jackets took the two-goal lead into the locker room. River Falls got on the board early in the third to cut the Yellowjacket lead in half. Josh Arnold broke into the Yellowjacket zone and took a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Oscar Svensson on the glove side to make it 2-1. From there River Falls had the puck in the offensive zone for long stretches, including a pressure-filled final four minutes, but the Yellowjacket defense kept things to the outside and didn't allow any second-chance opportunities. When a shot did get through, Svensson was there, finishing the period with eight saves. The Yellowjackets won the special teams battle, going 1-for-4 on the power play and killing off all three shorthanded opportunities. Charles Martin had another solid game on the blue line for the Yellowjackets, logging big minutes and assisting on both goals. Svensson earned the win Wednesday, making 26 saves to improve to 3-2 on the year. |  Game One Story and Stats
  • Following its victory Wednesday, the Yellowjacket men's hockey team entered play Friday knowing with a second straight win over UW-River Falls, it would plunge itself square in the middle of the logjam known as the WIAC standings. Three teams were sitting two points ahead of them and UW-Stevens Point before the game, meaning at the end of play Friday there could be as many as five teams tied with eight points. UW-River Falls is one of those teams, and with a win Friday it would not only avenge Wednesday's defeat, but would also be guaranteed at least a share of first place in the conference. The Yellowjackets broke the ice and opened the scoring Friday, but River Falls won the special teams battle, scoring three times on the power play on the way to a 4-2 win at Wessman Arena. Entering play Friday, the Yellowjackets owned one of the top five penalty killing percentages in the nation, having given up just one power play goal in 19 chances. River Falls changed all that on this night, finding the back of the net on three of its first four power plays and forcing the Yellowjackets to play from behind for a large portion of the game. Things started out well for the Yellowjackets, who traditionally have fared well when they open the scoring. At 5:08 of the opening period Chad Lopez (Arlington, Texas/University of Texas) got things started, pouncing on a rebound in the crease and poking it into a wide open net to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead. The play started when Artur Terchiyev (Kiev, Ukraine/Everest Academy) deftly corralled a spinning rebound and pushed it through traffic to find Lopez down low. Moments later the Falcons came back and tied the game when Vilho Saariluoma scored on the power play at 8:41. They took the lead for good at 11:33 of the first when Cayden Cahill got a loose puck at the left post and lifted it over Oscar Svensson (Södertälje, Sweden/Haga Gymnasium) for the second power play goal of the period, taking a 2-1 lead into the locker room. River Falls extended the lead on the power play at 4:07 of the second when Saariluoma wired a shot from the left circle over Svensson's glove to make it a 3-1 game. It stayed that way until the 8:00 mark of the third period when Josh Arnold scored his second goal in as many games against the Yellowjackets, beating Svensson between the pads on a long wrist shot. The Yellowjackets didn't go away quietly, however, and with 8:18 to go in the contest they pulled back to within two. Lopez carried the puck into the River Falls zone on the right wing, cut ot the middle at the top of the circle and wristed a shot past goaltender Dysen Skinner on the glove side to make the score 4-2. That was as close as the Yellowjackets would get, as River Falls defended the lead and picked up the hard-fought win. Svensson saw his record drop to 3-3-0 on the year, finishing the night with 21 saves on 25 shots. He gave way to Nick Althaus (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) who played the final 11:28 and stopped all five shots he faced. At the other end Skinner made 27 stops to get the win for River Falls. | Game Two Story and Stats

The win gives Kitchen his second shutout of the season and send the Blue Devils into the WIAC Championship first round series on a positive note.  Logan Nelson lit up the scoreboard with his ninth goal of the season at 3:41 of the first period with assists by Konnar Dechaine and Riley Jensen and the Blue Devil defense did an outstanding job to keep the 'Jackets off the board. The freshman Kitchen posted his second shutout of the season, with his first collegiate shutout coming Jan. 25 in a 4-0 win at Northland College. For Kitchen, it was his fifth game over his last five outings that he has stopped 30 or more shots.
