Yellowjackets score late to down Blue Devils

MENOMONIE (February 13, 2020) - For the second game of a three game series, UW-Superior (14-7-3, 7-7-0) came into town to face UW-Stout (6-17-1, 5-9-0). In a back and forth matchup, the Yellowjackets scored with 5:03 left in the game to seal the win. 

In the first period, Superior found the back of the net first as Troy York scored his twelfth goal of the year at the 9:33 of the period. York took a shot from the slot and beat Meyers to make the game 1-0. 

At 15:36 of the period, both teams took a penalty and the teams skated four on four. But no goals were accounted for and the first intermission saw the Yellowjackets up one goal. 

The shots after the first period were in favor of the Yellowjackets 10-8. 

Only 3:10 in the second period, Stout skated one man short, but the Blue Devils shut down the Superior powerplay. 

At 5:36 of the period, Stout went on a power play, but committed a penalty during the extra attacker. For 50 seconds, both teams skated four on four, but no goals were scored. Superior than went on a power play for 1:10, but Stout killed off the penalty. 

At 12:01 of the period, the Blue Devil's Adam Kresl evened up the score as Kresl beat Althaus' glove. Vladislav Sorokin and Peter Verstegen both assisted on the play. 

Only 1:13 later, the Yellowjackets went back up one as Troy York scored his second goal of the night.

At the end of the second period, the Yellowjackets led 2-1 on the Blue Devils. 

In the first six minutes of the third period, the Blue Devils outshot Superior 6-0. On the sixth shot of the period and at 4:51 of the period, Stout's Kobe Keller went bar down and the game was tied up at 2-2. Alex Bowe and Evan Butcher assisted on the tying goal. 

But at 14:57 of the third period, Superior's Jon Pace scored the game winning goal. 

With only 1:11 left in the game, Stout pulled their goalie to get an extra attacker. The Blue Devils had chances to score, but could not find the back of the net and the game ended 3-2. 

Nick Althaus got the win on the game and had 31 saves. Brady Meyers started in goal for Stout and stopped 24 shots. 

Up next is another matchup against UW-Superior as they travel to Superior on Saturday, February 15.
