THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (2-1, 2-1 WIAC) were tripped up at UW-Eau Claire's (3-0, 3-0 WIAC) Wednesday. The Blue Devils will try to turn the tables when they host the Blugolds, Friday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. When Stout played Eau Claire at McPhee Center Wednesday, it's the first time Stout has played there since the 1986-87 season, the season before Mark Thomas took over as Stout's women's basketball coach.  Eau Claire normally plays at Zorn Arena, but that facility is being used for COVID testing.
2020-21 SEASON: The COVID-19 pandemic forced all sports to rethink their schedule and WIAC basketball will have eight regular season games, which will only be against conference opponents, plus a conference tournament. The conference has been divided into two divisions, and East and West. The teams in each division will meet twice during the shortened regular season, all in the same week with games on Wednesdays and Fridays. Stout is in the West Division along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls and UW-La Crosse. There will two games against a crossover opponent, and Stout will play UW-Whitewater twice. The conference tournament is scheduled to be held the first week of March, with the first round Monday, March 1, the second round Wednesday, March 3 and the championship game Friday, March 5. All tournament games will be played at the high seed. No fans will be allowed during the 2020-21 season.

WEDNESDAY'S GAME: In their final outing last week against UW-River Falls, UW-Stout was able to turn around a 15 point deficit, but the Blue Devils were unable to repeat the feat Wednesday at UW-Eau Claire as the Blugolds took a 78-71 win out of their temporary quarters at McPhee Center. Stout (2-1, 2-1 WIAC) trailed by 13 points with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and managed to get the score to four points, 75-71, with 10 seconds remaining. The Blue Devils were forced to foul and Eau Claire (3-0, 3-0 WIAC) made 3 of 4 free throw to keep Stout an arm's length away. After a relatively even first quarter, the Blugolds outscored Stout 24-11 in the second period to take a 42-27 hafltime lead. The Blue Devils opened the third period on a 12-2 run to pull to within five points, 44-39 at 6:07, but Eau Claire took the score back to a 10 point lead then built up to the 13 point lead midway through the fourth. Again Stout cut into the lead, outscoring Eau Claire 13-4 as 
Tess Johnson nailed three 3-pointers in the run. 
McKenzie Johnson would hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to pull Stout to within four points, but that would be the closest Stout would get. 
Tess Johnson led Stout with 15 points and 
Liz Oswald scored a season-high 13 points. Stout shot 41.8 percent (23-55) from the floor, hitting 8 of 16 3-pointers and 17 of 24 free throws. Stout outrebounded Eau Claire, 35-27. The Blugolds had four players in double digits, led by Katie Essen's 23 points. Maizie Deihl had 17, Jessie Ruden 14 and Jadelyn Ganski 10. The Blugolds shot 44.4 percent (28-63), hitting 6 of 17 3-pointers and 16 of 20 free throws. Eau Claire forced 22 Stout turnovers and held Stout to their lowest point total of the season. |

A  LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
	- Freshman and second year players are leading the Blue Devils on stat sheet early in the season. Sophomore center Erin O'Brien set career-bests in her first two games, scoring 14 points in the season opener, then took that up to 21 points in the second game of the season and pitched in nine points against Eau Claire to average 14,7 points, seventh in the league. Freshman Tess Johnson has scored in double figures in all three games (15-17-15), averaging 15.7 points, sixth in the WIAC. Fellow freshman Anna Mutch is averaging 11.0 points after collecting a double-double (14 pts, 12 rbs) in the season opener. Sophomore Haylee Yaeger is averaging 13.5 points. 
- Senior captain Liz Oswald is averaging 3.7 assists per contest and the Blue Devils are tied with UW-Whitewater in assists, averaging 12.3 per contest. 
- The Blue Devils have been dominant on the boards in their first three games, tallying 137 rebounds to 96 allowed. Mutch leads Stout with 9.5 boards,and is third in the WIAC, followed by Lauren Arenz with 7.0. Yaeger is averaging 4.7 boards, Johnson 4.3 and O'Brien 4.0. 
- Johnson leads the WIAC in steals at 3.0. 
- When the Blue Devils pulled down 60 rebounds against River Falls, Friday, it was the most by a Stout team since the Blue Devils recorded 68 against North Central, Nov. 15, 2013. The Blue Devils have been at least plus-8 in rebounds in every game so far this season. Stout was plus-9 (42-33) in the first game against River Falls, plus-24 (60-36) in the second game with the Falcons and plus-8 (35-27) against Eau Claire. Stout is a league-best plus-13.7 in rebounds.

AN OVERALL LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
	- The Blue Devils lost nine players from last year, including four starters, with senior guard Liz Oswald the only player returning who has made more than two starts. A two-time team captain, Oswald averaged 8.6 points per contest and 2.3 rebounds. Senior Lizzy Olsem and sophomore Haylee Yaeger saw action in all 26 games. Olsem came off the bench and scored in double digits five times, with a career-best 16 points at nationally ranked Wartburg College, and finished the season averaging 5.5 points and 2.2 rebounds. Over her first two seasons, Olsem tallied 68 total points, but last season she tossed in 142 points. Yaeger came off the bench to pull down 3.6 rebounds and is averaging 5.5 points. Yaeger recorded her first collegiate double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds against Husson University in Florida.
- The Blue Devils also return sophomore center Erin O'Brien, junior guard Paityn Tiefs, sophomore guard Melanie Carlie and junior forward Gina Palasz.
- The Blue Devils return 17.0 points from last year's team that averaged 68.2 points per contest. The Blue Devils also return 14.5 rebounds from last year's 41.3 rebounds per game. The Blue Devils return 24.8 percent of their scoring and 34.9 percent of their rebounds. 
- The Blue Devils finished last year at second in scoring, averaging 68.2 points per game. Whitewater led the league in scoring with 68.4 points. The Blue Devils gave up 64.2 points. Stout led the league in rebounding margin, snagging 41.3 rebounds and allowing 34.3 points for a plus-7.0 margin. 
- Lizzy Olsem has come off the bench and has Olsem, a junior forward, has played in all 25 games, starting one and is averaging 5.6 points in 11.7 minutes. As a freshman, Olsem averaged 4.5 minutes across 21 games, averaging 0.5 points. Last season, Olsem saw action in all 27 games, averaging 8.7 minutes and 2.5 points.
- The Blue Devils return two starters from last season's team in Amber Fabeck, who earned all-WIAC honorable mention honors, and Liz Oswald. Fabeck averaged 13.4 points and had 5.0 rebounds. Oswald, along with Shannan Watkins, Becky Fesenmaier, Emily Jacques and Lizzy Olsem have seen considerable throughout their careers. The Blue Devils return nine players from last year and welcome nine newcomers.
- The Blue Devils lost two all-conference players in forward Amber Fabeck (12.6 ppg/5.2 rpg) and guard Shannan Watkins (11.0 ppg/6.0 rpg). 
- Newcomers to the Blue Devils this season include: guards Sam Schaeffer, Kenadi Diedrich, Tess Johnson, McKenzie Johnson, Lauren Arenz, Brianna Prieve and Anna Mutch and forward Amanda Giesen.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS:
	- There will be no WIAC preseason poll this season. 
STOUT LAST WEEK:
	- The Blue Devils swept UW-River Falls in last week's season openers. The Blue Devils took an 84-77 win in River Falls, Feb. 3, then came back to win 80-75, Feb. 5, in Menomonie. 
- Led by a pair of freshmen playing their first collegiate games, UW-Stout had five players in double figures and went on to win a tight game at UW-River Falls, 84-77, Wednesday at Page Arena. Stout took the lead in the opening stanza with sophomore Erin O'Brien scoring six of her career-high 14 and Stout led, 22-20 at the first break. The Falcons carried a 48-47 lead into the halftime locker room, with O'Brien adding another six points in the frame. The Blue Devils took as much as a six point lead when freshman Anna Mutch gave Stout a 63-57 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the period, but the Falcons scored the final four points to pull to 63-61. The Blue Devils fell behind, 69-68, at 6:37 of the fourth, but O'Brien put Stout ahead to stay a half minute later and Tess Johnson drained a 3-pointer to make it 73-69 at 5:07. Johnson scored six of her game-high 15 points in the final period.  The Falcons got to within one point, 78-77, on a Bethany Vasecka bucket with 1:50 remaining, but that would prove to be the final River Falls points as Stout scored the final six points, including a basket by Sam Schaefer and a pair of free throws each by Mutch and Liz Oswald.  The freshman Johnson led Stout with 15 points and also had eight rebounds. Johnson also had three steals and three assists. Fellow freshman Mutch collected her first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. O'Brien had 14 points, sophomore Haylee Yaeger 12 and senior Lizzy Olsem 10. The Falcons had four players in double figures, getting 16 points from Colie Justice, 14 points from Macy Nilson, 13 points from Jenna Zeman and 12 points from Bethany Vasecka. Stout held a 42-33 advantage off the glass. In addition to Mutch's 14 rebounds and Johnson's eight, O'Brien pulled down five and Yaeger and Schaeffer each had four. - Trailing by 15 points with 2:30 left in the third quarter, UW-Stout stormed back to down UW-River Falls, 80-75, to sweep the two-game series Friday at Johnson Fieldhouse. River Falls led 41-40 at halftime, but came out of halftime on fire and building up to the 15 point lead, 61-46 and led 64-52 by outscoring Stout 23-12 in the period. But the Blue Devils youngsters stayed steady, outscoring the Falcons 21-10 when Anna Mutch gave the Blue Devils the lead, 74-73, with 2-:04 remaining in the game. Stout went on to outscore the Falcons 6-2 the rest of the way to earn the win, hitting 6 of 8 free throws. Stout's Erin O'Brien scored nine of her game-high 21 points in the final quarter, notching her second consecutive career high. Freshman Tess Johnson scored seven of her 17 points in the final period to also gain her second career high. Haylee Yaeger added 15 points for Stout and Mutch finished with 12 points. River Falls was led by Haley DeSouza with 18 points after draining 6 of 9 three-pointers. Jenna Zeman finished with 17 points, Cassie Heinrichs with 13 points and Macy Nilsen with 10 points. Stout's Lauren Arenz pulled down 12 rebounds as Stout controlled the boards with 60-36 advantage. SCOUTING UW-EAU CLAIRE
	- The Blugolds have three players averaging in double digits. Jessie Ruden leads the way with 17.0 points, followed by Maizie Deihl with 16.0, and Katie Essen with 14.5. Jadelyn Ganski is averaging 7.7 rebounds and Menomonie native Tyra Boettcher is leading the way off the glass, averaging 8.0 boards. Ruden is third in the league in scoring and leads the pack in 3-pointers made with 3.3 per contest. Diehl is fifth in the WIAC is scoring and Essen is seventh. - Jessie Ruden was selected the WIAC/Kwik Trip Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week. Ruden averaged 18.5 points per game during the week, leading the Blugolds to a 2-0 start on the season  with a sweep of UW-La Crosse. She had a game-high 22 points in a 64-48 triumph on Feb. 5 and a team-high three assists in a 76-58 win on Feb. 3. Ruden shot 48.0 percent (12-for-25) on the week and grabbed four rebounds. This was the first time UW-Eau Claire beat UW-La Crosse twice in a season dating back to 2016. 
THE BLUGOLDS LAST WEEK
	- The Blugolds dominated play last week with UW-La Crosse, downing the Eagles, 76-58, in the season and home opener, then took a 64-48 win at La Crosse Friday. 
- Eau Claire won their 2021 season opener over UW-La Crosse on Wednesday night, 76-58. The Blugolds would open their scoring with a jumper from Jessie Ruden. They would take that lead to the end of the first quarter, up 23-14. The leading scorer in the quarter was Ruden, who had eight points. They would extend that lead in the second quarter, going into the halftime break up 41-24. It was Jade Ganski  who would jumpstart the offense in the second period, hitting a three-pointer within the first minute. The hot shooting for Eau Claire continued into the third quarter, as they dropped 26 points in the period. Ruden had nine in the quarter, while Katie Essen added five of her own. The Blugolds cooled off in the final period, but still cruised to an 18-point victory to begin the season. While the offense shot nearly 54% from the field, it was the swarming defense that fueled the win. They forced 18 La Crosse turnovers, scoring 21 points off of them. Ruden ended the game leading all scorers, with 20 points off 7-12 shooting. She also hit four three-pointers. In addition to Ruden, Essen supplied 18 points and had five rebounds, while Maizie Deihl had 17 points. - Eau Claire defeated UW-La Crosse on Friday night, 64-48. Jessie Ruden quickly began the scoring for Eau Claire, hitting a three-pointer to open the action. The Blugolds were able to extend their lead throughout the first quarter, going into break up 17-9. Maizie Deihl hit a jumper in the final seconds to close the quarter. That lead would hold for the remainder of the first half, as Eau Claire hit halftime break leading 33-23. Ellie Clayton fueled the offense in the second period, as she had seven points. At half, Ruden was the leading scorer, knocking down a trio of three-pointers to help give her 14 points. A pair of free throws from Deihl would kick off the second half scoring. The Eagles would end up taking the third period, but the Blugolds still went into the fourth with a nine-point advantage. Things would tighten even more to begin the final quarter, but a huge three from Deihl gave UWEC much-needed separation. The Blugolds would add 16 points in the final period, bringing them to 64 on the night. Ruden would finish the night as the top scorer, with 22 points off 7-14 shooting. Deihl would add 14 of her own, while Clayton had 13. In addition, Tyra Boettcher led all players with nine rebounds. While Eau Claire didn't have as strong of a shooting night from the field as their opener, they did go 10-24 from three (41.7%). THE BLUGOLDS LAST YEAR
	- The Blugolds finished the season at 18-10 overall, 10-4 in the WIAC. The Blugolds defeated UW-Stevens Point, 72-63, in the first round of the WIAC tournament, then bounced UW-La Crosse, 59-56, in the second round, before seeing their season end with a 52-50 loss in the championship game. Like the Blue Devils, Eau Claire returns no all-conference players from last season.
WHEN STOUT AND EAU CLAIRE MET LAST SEASON
	- The Blugolds won both meetings last season. Eau Claire won at Zorn Arena, 64-59, Jan. 8, then carried out the sweep with an 83-80 overtime win in Johnson Fieldhouse. 
- UW-Eau Claire virtually shut down UW-Stout's perimeter game in the second half and went on to hand the Blue Devils' their first conference loss of the season, a 64-59 decision at Zorn Arena. The Blue Devils hit eight 3-pointers in the first half to work their way to a one point, 32-31, halftime lead. But the led was almost shut from downtown in the second half as Stout could only can two 3-pointers after the break. Stout stretched the lead to four points after third period, taking a 44-40, but the Blugolds (6-6, 1-1 WIAC) outscored the Blue Devils 19-12 in the final stanza as Eau Claire's Hallee Hoeppner scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the quarter.  Hoeppner gave Eau Claire the lead at the 5:02 mark of the final period on a pair of free throws. Stout would tie the score with 2:46 left on a layup by Katie Christopherson. A basket by the Blugolds' Anna Grasskamp and a free throw by Hoeppner moments later gave Eau Claire a 61-58 lead. Two free throws by Hoeppner and a single throw by Katie Essen gave the home team a 64-58 lead. Stout's Lindsey Johnson made the front end of a free throw with 18 seconds left, then rebounded her miss passing the ball but Stout's last gasp was a missed 3-pointer.  While the Blugolds were controlling Stout's outside game, the Blugolds took advantage underneath, outscoring Stout 28-12 in the paint for the game. Eau Claire outrebounded Stout, 40-35. Liz Oswald led Stout with 11 points and Christopherson finished with 10 points. As a team, Stout shot 30.5 percent (18-59) from the floor and 41.7 percent from 3-point range.  Hoeppner finished the night with a double-double, pulling down 11 rebounds to go with her 19 points. - UW-Eau Claire outlasted UW-Stout 83-80 in a double overtime thriller on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse Jan. 25. Even career scoring nights by senior Amber Fabeck and freshman Katie Christoperson would not be enough as Eau Claire outscored Stout 13-10 in the second overtime period.  Stout led 29-26 at the end of the first half, 46-44 at the end of the third period, and held a six-point, 59-53 lead with 2:34 left  in the first OT. The Blugolds' Kelsey Bakken and Hallee Hoeppner hit back-to-back 3s to tie at 59 with 1:08 left in regulation and neither team scored the rest of the way. Stout forced a turnover with six seconds left, but could not hit the 3-pointer. In the first OT, Stout held the biggest lead of the first extra period, 66-63, with 2:23 led in OT and Stout held a 68-66 lead after Amber Fabeck laid a shot in. Katie Essen tied the score at 1:08 and the Blugolds took a 70-68 lead on two free throws by Anna Graaskamp.  Stout's Katie Christopherson tied the score with six seconds left and the Blugolds turned the ball over. Christopherson's 3 at the buzzer missed and the first OT ended tied at 70-70. In the second overtime – Stout's second double overtime game of the season – the Blugolds outscored Stout 13-10 and Eau Claire led throughout most of that period. Stout's Lindsey Johnson tied the score at 76-76 with a pair of free throws, but the Blugolds went on a 6-0 run with baskets by Graaskamp, Bakken and Katelyn Morgan for an 82-76 lead. Stout could only get as close as three with the final score. The Blugolds had four players in double figures. Graaskamp scored 19, Hoeppner 18, Essen 15 and Bakken 14. AWARDS AND HONORS: 2019-20: Shannan Watkins and Amber Fabeck were selected to the All-WIAC Team. Watkins was also selected to the All-Defensive team....Shannan Watkins was selected as the UW-Stout athlete of the week, Jan. 6, after her performances against Dubuque, Salisbury, Husson and UW-Platteville... Shannan Watkins was selected to the St. Norbert College All-Tournament team, Nov. 16... 2018-19: Bailey Diersen named second team all-region by D3hoops.com, Kyncaide Diedrich third team all-region...Bailey Diersen earned CoSIDA/Google Cloud Academic All-District honors. THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:
	- Hannah Iverson (35-21) is in her third year in 2020-21 as the head coach of the Blue Devils. (started the season at 33-20)
- Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
- Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
- A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.
- Iverson has gotten to 30 career wins faster than any other Blue Devil basketball coach, men or women. Iverson reached her 30th win in 42 games. Mark Thomas needed to turn around a women's basketball program that had won only two games the previous two seasons before he arrived. Thomas needed 75 games to reach 30 wins, but once he did, he kept building and became the winningest basketball coach in Blue Devil history, both men and women. UW-EAU CLAIRE COACH TONJA ENGLUND
	- Tonja Englund (349-202) is in her 21st season as head coach in at UW-Eau Claire. TThe Blugolds finished off their 2019-2020 season with a 10-4 WIAC record (tied for second in the league), and an 18-10 record overall. The Blugolds also advanced to the championship round of the WIAC Conference Tournament. Englund coached 2020 Josten's Player of the Year Finalist Hallee Hoeppner, who also earned WBCA 1st Team All-American and All-Region honors. Hoeppner is the 6th Josten's Player of the Year finalist to play for Englund. Entering the 2020-2021 season, Englund's 346 wins ranks fourth most in WIAC history. In 2015-16 Englund became UW-Eau Claire's winningest women's basketball coach. Englund has four WIAC Championships in her tenure (2001, 2003, 2008, 2012) as well as five NCAA tournament appearances.
CONFERENCE: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW- Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater.
