MENOMONIE (January 29, 2020) - UW-Eau Claire outlasted UW-Stout 83-80 in a double overtime thriller on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse Wednesday night.
Even career scoring nights by senior
Amber Fabeck and freshman Katie Christoperson would not be enough as Eau Claire (11-7, 6-2 WIAC) outscored Stout 13-10 in the second overtime period.
Stout (12-7, 3-5 WIAC) led 29-26 at the end of the first half, 46-44 at the end of the third period, and held a six-point, 59-53 lead with 2:34 left in the first OT.
The Blugolds' Kelsey Bakken and Hallee Hoeppner hit back-to-back 3s to tie at 59 with 1:08 left in regulation and neither team scored the rest of the way. Stout forced a turnover with six seconds left, but could not hit the 3-pointer.
In the first OT, Stout held the biggest lead of the first extra period, 66-63, with 2:23 led in OT and Stout held a 68-66 lead after
Amber Fabeck laid a shot in. Katie Essen tied the score at 1:08 and the Blugolds took a 70-68 lead on two free throws by Anna Graaskamp. Stout's
Katie Christopherson tied the score with six seconds left and the Blugolds turned the ball over. Christopherson's 3 at the buzzer missed and the first OT ended tied at 70-70.
In the second overtime – Stout's second double overtime game of the season – the Blugolds outscored Stout 13-10 and Eau Claire led throughout most of that period. Stout's
Lindsey Johnson tied the score at 76-76 with a pair of free throws, but the Blugolds went on a 6-0 run with baskets by Graaskamp, Bakken and Katelyn Morgan for an 82-76 lead. Stout could only get as close as three with the final score.
The Blugolds (11-7, 6-2 WIAC) had four players in double figures. Graaskamp scored 19, Hoeppner 18, Essen 15 and Bakken 14.
Stout got career-bests from Fabeck and Christopherson. Fabeck led all scorers with 28 and Christopherson had 26 points, draining five 3-pointers.
Shannan Watkins finished with 10 points.
The Blue Devils may find a short road trip refreshing after dropping two consecutive conference games by three points or less at Johnson Fieldhouse, their first two home losses of the season. Stout will be at UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Feb. 5 and at UW-Platteville, Saturday, Feb. 8.
