Blue Devils come back from third quarter deficit to earn win

UW-Stout 80, UW-River Falls 75

MENOMONIE (February 5, 2021) - Trailing by 15 points with 2:30 left in the third quarter, UW-Stout stormed back to down UW-River Falls, 80-75, to sweep the two-game series Friday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
 
River Falls (0-2, 0-2 WIAC) led 41-40 at halftime, but came out of halftime on fire and building up to the 15 point lead, 61-46 and led 64-52 by outscoring Stout 23-12 in the period.
 
But the Blue Devils (2-0, 2-0 WIAC) youngsters stayed steady, outscoring the Falcons 21-10 when Anna Mutch gave the Blue Devils the lead, 74-73, with 2-:04 remaining in the game. Stout went on to outscore the Falcons 6-2 the rest of the way to earn the win, hitting 6 of 8 free throws.
 
Stout's Erin O'Brien scored nine of her game-high 21 points in the final quarter, notching her second consecutive career high. Freshman Tess Johnson scored seven of her 17 points in the final period to also gain her second career high.
 
Haylee Yaeger added 15 points for Stout and Mutch finished with 12 points.
 
River Falls was led by Haley DeSouza with 18 points after draining 6 of 9 three-pointers. Jenna Zeman finished with 17 points, Cassie Heinrichs with 13 points and Macy Nilsen with 10 points.
 
Stout's Lauren Arenz pulled down 12 rebounds as Stout controlled the boards with 60-36 advantage. The 60 rebounds are the most by a Stout team since the Blue Devils recorded 68 against North Central, Nov. 15, 2013.
 
Stout will be at UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Feb. 10.
