THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The regular season comes to an end tonight as UW-Stout (2-5) takes on UW-Whitewater (1-5) in a rematch of Wednesday's game where the Blue Devils came out on top of a 93-90 overtime win in Whitewater. Both teams will head into the WIAC Championship tournament next Monday, March 1. Stout will be at UW-Oshkosh with a 2 p.m. tipoff, while the Warhawks will be at UW-River Falls with a 6 p.m. start. The second round of the tournament is Wednesday, March 3 and championship day is Friday, March 5.
2020-21 SEASON: The COVID-19 pandemic forced all sports to rethink their schedule and WIAC basketball will have eight regular season games, which will only be against conference opponents, plus a conference tournament. The conference has been divided into two divisions, and East and West. The teams in each division will meet twice during the shortened regular season, all in the same week with games on Wednesdays and Fridays. Stout is in the West Division along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls and UW-La Crosse. There will two games against a crossover opponent, and Stout will play UW-Whitewater twice. The conference tournament is scheduled to be held the first week of March, with the first round Monday, March 1, the second round Wednesday, March 3 and the championship game Friday, March 5. All tournament games will be played at the high seed. No fans will be allowed during the 2020-21 season.

A LOOK AT THE 2020-21 BLUE DEVILS
- he Blue Devils are led in scoring by a couple of newcomers this season. Armani Tinsley went off for a career-best 25 points at Whitewater Wednesday and is now averaging 15.9 points per contest. Freshman Lovell Williams is averaging 11.7 points and TYreese Alexander is at 10.0 points. Tinsley has scored in double digits in all seven games. Tinsley has been the team's scoring leader in four of the seven games. Tinsley leads the team in 3-point shots with 21, launching five on Wednesday Williams leads the team in assists with 19 total. Alexander notched his third double-double as a Blue Devil, scoring 22 points in the second game of the season against River Falls and pulled down 10 rebounds. Alexander is second in the WIAC in field goal percentage at .618 (34-55). Senior guard Luke Geiger scored a season-high 20 points Wednesday, bumping his average up to 9.3 points per contest and 4.9 rebounds. Williams has 12 3-pointers and Gieger, nine. Jon Ciriacks returned to the Blue Devil line-up and scored 15 points, running his per game average to 11.0. Stout is averaging 71.4 points and giving up 79.3 points. Wednesday was Stout's top offensive output of the season.
AN OVERVIEW OF THE BLUE DEVILS
- The Blue Devils were led in 2019-20 by Jon Ciriacks who averaged 16.0 points, a mark that ranked fifth in the WIAC. Ciriack averaged 6.1 rebounds, seventh in the league and stepped outside to pop in a team-best 54 3-point shots, averaging 2.16 3-pointers, sixth in the WIAC. Ciriacks came close to doubling his 3-point output from the previous season when he hit 31 total 3-point attempts. Ciriacks shot .833 from the free throw line, hitting 75-of-90 charity attempts, tying for second in the WIAC. Ciriacks scored in double figures in 20 of the team's 25 contests and seven times has scored 20 or more points. Ciriacks scored a career-high 35 points during the 2019-20 season against Bethany Lutheran. Ciriacks scored a career-best 399 total points (135-319), giving him 738 points, putting him 50th on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list.
- Luke Geiger has been part of the inside-outside game for the Blue Devils and averaged 13.4 points, 12th in the WIAC. The lanky guard averaged 4.6 rebounds and led the team in assists with 38. Geiger scored a career-best 31 points against Concordia-Moorhead early in the season, 30 points in a win over Northland College and 27 points against Lakeland University. Geiger, who went from scoring 11 total points as a freshman to 332 points as a sophomore, finished with 335 points, tallying 678 career points, good for 60th on the all-time list.
- TYreese Alexander, who transferred to Stout from Oakland Community College, finished the 2019-20 season averaging 9.6 points. Alexander found his spot in the second half of the season, which coincided with the conference season, when he scored in double digits in 10 of 14 conference games. Alexander shot a smooth .574 (99-181) from the floor, third in the WIAC. Alexander was second on the team in rebounds at 5.6 per game, ranking 13th in the WIAC, and led the team in blocked shots with 15, notching a Stout-best four blocked shots against UW-Stevens Point, Feb. 19. Alexander scored a career-best 21 points against UW-River Falls, Jan. 15, and scored 20 against UW-Oshkosh, Feb. 15.
- Stout returns four of their five starters and return six of their seven top scorers.
- Josh Mericle started 20 games last season, including all 14 conference games. Mericle averaged 5.9 points per contest and scored a career-high 19 points, Edgewood College, Dec. 29, 2019, topping a previous best 15 point performance vs. Bethany Lutheran. Mericle was second on the team in assists, dishing off 37.
- Kyle Jackson saw action in 20 games, starting two, and averaged 6.1 points. Marcus Hill was one of only three players (with Ciriacks and Geiger) who saw action in all 25 games. Hill came off the bench to average 16.4 minutes per contest, scoring 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds. Jake Horton saw action in 23 games and started seven games. Horton averaged just over 14 minutes and was third on the team in assists with 33.
- Seeing action in more than 10 games last season are: Kaden Koski, Preston Briggs, Carson Moe, Zach Miller and Brady Booth.
- When Ciriacks scored a career-best 35 points against Bethany Lutheran. The 35 points is the most since Jerrod Buchholz scored 34 points Jan. 5, 2011 against UW-River Falls. The following is a list of players who have scored 35 or more points in a single game since 1998-99. - Miles Webb scored 37 points Jan. 16, 2008 against UW-Stevens Point. - As a team, the Blue Devils finished fourth in the league in scoring with 74.0 points, while allowing 82.9 points.

WHEN STOUT AND WHITEWATER MET WEDNESDAY
- Jon CiriackS hit a 3-pointer with 1:26 left in overtime to tie the game and Armani Tinsley hit a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left to give Stout a three point lead and the Blue Devils went on to a 93-90 win over UW-Whitewater Wednesday at Kachel Gymnasium. Ciriacks, playing in his first game since an injury in the season opener, played a big part in regulation to get Stout to overtime. Trailing 82-78, Ciriacks drained a 3-pointer with 45 seconds remaining in regulation to cut the lead to one. The Warhawks' Derek Gray hit a free throw to make it 83-81 with 14 seconds left. Armani Tinsley tied the score with a layup with three seconds left. Stout took the lead early in overtime, but the Warhawks took an 86-85 lead on a pair of free throws, then stretched the lead to three points, 88-85, on Derek Gray's layup. Ciriack tied the game, and Tinsley gave Stout a three point, 91-88 lead. The Warhawks' Gage Malensek pulled the Warhawks to within one point, but Ciriacks' layup gave Stout the cushion they would need. Stout shot 45.5 percent (35-77) from the floor, while the Warhawks shot 48.6 percent (34-72).
BLUE DEVILS LAST WEEK
- The Blue Devils lost both games last week with UW-La Crosse, with the Eagles taking both game, 84-62, 92-75.
- UW-Stout made a run at UW-La Crosse to open the second half, but it wouldn't be enough as the Eagles went on to an 84-62 win Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse. La Crosse held a 47-28 halftime lead, but Stout (1-4, 1-4 WIAC) cut the lead to as close as 12 points by going on a 12-2 run to pull to within 49-37, then came as close as 11 points at 16:05. Stout pulled to within 10 points with 8:34 left. The Eagles would go on to build as much as a 24 point lead. The Eagles' Wyatt Cook led all scorers with 26 points and Ethan Anderson added 22. Seth Anderson contributed 16 points and La Crosse shot 54.9 percent (28-51) for the game. TYreese Alexander led Stout with 18 points and Armani Tinsley scored 10 for Stout. - After UW-Stout pulled to within one point, 23-22, midway through the first half, UW-La Crosse went on a 21-8 tear over the next six minutes and never looked back to hand the Blue Devils a 92-75 loss Friday at Mitchell Hall. La Crosse went into halftime with a 49-30 lead and stretched that deep into 20-plus lead in the second half. Stout got as close as 14 point five minutes into the second half, but the Eagles stretched that to as much as 27 points over the next five minutes. The Eagles' Ethan Anderson led all scorers with 31 points, hitting 10-20 shots from the floor, including three 3-pointer, and 8 of 9 free throws. Henry Noone came off the bench to score 17 points and Wyatt Cook scored 16. The Blue Devils were led by Armani Tinsley's 16 points. Lovell Williams contributed 14 points. Drew Scott pulled down career-best seven rebounds. The Blue Devils collected seven blocked shots, more than twice as many as they have had the previous five games. La Crosse shot 43.2 percent (32-74) from the floor, draining 11 3-pointers and 17-19 free throws. The Eagles outrebounded Stout, 37-33. Stout saw their shooting percentage go up throughout the game. - Gage Malensek leads the Warhawks in scoring at 18.8 points per contest, third in the WIAC. The sophomore exploded for 31 points against UW-Stevens Point and only once has been held under 10 points. Twice this season he has scored 22 points in a single game. Trevon Chislom is averaging 13.3 points and had a season-high 19 points Wednesday. - The Warhawks lost both games last week to UW-Platteville, 79-69, 64-58.
- Whitewater was unable to sustain momentum Wednesday night in a 79-69 setback against 11th-ranked UW-Platteville in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest inside Kachel Gymnasium. Warhawks trailed for the final 30 minutes of regulation after the Pioneers took a 22-20 lead near the midway point of the first half. Gage Malensek tallied a game-high 22 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists to lead UW-W, which shot 54.2 percent from the floor. Derek Gray was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field on his way to nine points off the bench. - Whitewater played its third straight game against a nationally-ranked opponent Friday night, falling 64-58 at No. 11 UW-Platteville in a conference game. Chislom and Hunt each starred off the bench. Trevon Chislom tallied a career-high tying 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks, while Breontae Hunt registered 13 points, six rebounds and three assists. LAST YEAR WHEN WHITEWATER AND STOUT MET LAST SEASON
- The teams split last year, with each team winning in their opponent's gym. The Warhawks eked out a 73-72 win in Menomonie, Jan. 18, 2020, and the Blue Devils took an 84-82 win, Feb. 22, in the final game of the season.
- UW-Stout trailed by as much as nine points with four minutes left, but cut the UW-Whitewater lead to one point with 4.5 seconds remaining and the ball on their end of the court. But the shot at the buzzer hit the back of the rim and UW-Whitewater carried a 73-72 win out of Johnson Fieldhouse Saturday. Jan 18, 2020. Trailing 70-61, TYreese Alexander cut the lead to 70-63 with 2:55 left, then stole the ball, but was fouled on the ensuing layup. Alexander made the first shot and missed the second. Moments later, Jon Ciriacks cut the lead to 70-67 on a 3-pointer. The Warhawks' James Burks answered with a 3-pointer of his own to stretch the lead to 73-67 with 1:13 left, the last time Whitewater (6-10, 1-4 WIAC) would score in the game. Luke Geiger pulled Stout to within 73-68 on a pair of free throws, then the Stout defense force a shot clock violation. Cliff McCray drove to the basket, made the shot and was fouled, draining the free throw to make it 73-72. The Blue Devils fouled, but the Warhawks missed both shots and Alexander cleaned the glass with the rebound. Following a timeout by both teams and 4.5 seconds left, the Blue Devils' Josh Mericle drove, but the ball hit the back of the rim and fell away as time expired. Stout scored the first seven points of the game and led by as much as 10 points in the first half. Whitewater pulled to with 38-36 at halftime. The Warhawks ran out to a six point lead after the intermission and built up as a much as a 10 point lead midway through the second half. Two of the leading scorers in the league – the Warhawks' Equan Ards and Stout's Ciriacks – lit up the board. Ards, the conference's leading scorer, led all scorers with 29 points, scoring 14 in the first half, 15 in the second, while Ciriacks, the league's fourth leading scorer, finished with 26 points, 18 in the first half. The Warhawks had two other players in double digits. Burks finished with 17 points and Bailey Kale 10. Alexander collected his first Stout double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 boards. - In the final 16 seconds of the game, Josh Mericle connected on three free throws and Luke Geiger produced a game-sealing steal as UW-Stout had to overcome a gigantic game by UW-Whitewater's Equan Ards. The Blue Devils did just that and went on to close the season with an 84-82 win at Kachel Gymnasium Feb. 22, 2020. The Blue Devils trailed 46-42 at halftime and trailed by as much as nine points midway through the second half. Trailing 70-61 with 11:03 left in the game, Stout outscored the Warhawks11-3 to pull to within one point, 73-72, with 4:52 remaining in the game. Whitewater went back ahead 76-72, but Stout's Geiger brought it back to one point, 76-75, on a three point play. Geiger put the Blue Devils ahead 76-77 on a layup, but two Warhawk free throws by Trevon Chislom put the home team back in the lead and a layup by Chislom made the score 80-77 at 2:11. Stout's TYreese Alexander made it 80-79 and two free throw by Geiger put Stout ahead 81-80 with 37 seconds left. The Warhawks' Ards scored his 49th point of the game with 26 seconds left to give Whitewater an 82-81 lead, but Mericle made two free throws with 16 seconds left, then added another with six seconds remaining for an 84-82 lead. Geiger sealed the game with a steal. And Stout recorded their second conference win of the season. Ards connected on 21 of 38 shots, making four 3-pointers and three free throws. The transfer also had nine rebounds. Geiger led Stout with 26 points. Alexander recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jon Ciriacks and Cliff McCray each had 13 points. Stout held a 46-39 rebound advantage. The last time Stout beat Whitewater was Dec. 7, 2013, 74-69, in Johnson Fieldhouse. BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played what is believed to be their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH JIM LAKE
- Jim Lake (14-43) is in his third season in 2020-21 as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Lake came to Stout after 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State. The Bulldogs won the 2017-18 NCAA Division II national title.
- Lake served at Ferris State University for a total of 10 years, the last five years beginning with the 2013-14 season as the program's top assistant men's basketball coach. Lake had served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs in two different stints over the previous decade, working as a part-time assistant coach from 2011-13 before moving up to the full-time lead position, and as a volunteer assistant coach from 2003-06.
- During five seasons as the Bulldogs' top assistant coach, Lake helped Ferris State to four consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament championships and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, culminating in a 38-1 overall record and the 2018 NCAA Division II national title with a 71-69 win over Northern State University in March.
UW-WHITEWATER'S PAT MILLER
- Pat Miller enters his 20th year at the helm of the program in 2020-21. Entering the 2018-19 season, Miller ranked fourth all-time in winning percentage among coaches with a minimum of 10 seasons coaching at the NCAA D-III level and fifth among active Division III coaches. A four-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Miller has led the Warhawks to two NCAA Division III national championships. In 2011-12, UW-Whitewater won its first national title since 1989, when Miller was a co-captain and the Warhawks' third-leading scorer. The 2011-12 team finished 29-4 overall and 13-3 in the WIAC, winning its NCAA Tournament games by an average margin of over 14 points per contest. Two years later, in 2013-14, UW-Whitewater won the championship with overall and conference records identical to those in 2011-12. The Warhawks were dominant through their first five games of the NCAA Tournament before defeating Williams (Mass.) in a thrilling national title game, 75-73. Quardell Young's lay-up and free throw with one second remaining was the deciding play of the contest.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. There will be no WIAC preseason poll this year.
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
