THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (9-2, 1-1 WIAC) will travel to Oshkosh to participate in the BSN Winter Classic, facing
Ripon College (7-3, 3-0 MWC), Wednesday, Dec. 29 at 4:30 p.m., then will take on
Calvin College (6-3, 0-0 MIAA), Thursday, Dec. 30 at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be at the Oshkosh Arena, which is the home of the Wisconsin Herd, the G-League team of the NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks. The arena was formerly known as the Menomonee Nation Arena. The games will be Stout's final non-conference games of the season. Stout returns to conference play when they host UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 3 p.m., then will be at third-ranked UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.

The BSN Sports Winter Classic begins Wednesday with Ripon College (7-3) taking on UW-Stout (9-2) at 4:30 p.m. followed by UW-Oshkosh (10-1) hosting Calvin University (6-3) at 7:30 p.m. On Thursday, Calvin University plays UW-Stout at 2:30 p.m. before the event concludes with UW-Oshkosh battling Ripon College at 5:30 p.m. The four teams have a combined win-loss record of 32-9 this season.
The Oshkosh Arena doors open at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Daily tickets, priced at $20 for courtside seats and $10 for all other seats, are good for both games at the 3,500-seat arena that opened in 2017.

A LOOK AT THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS
- Stout is the top scoring team in the WIAC this season, averaging 92.2 points per game to rank seventh in the nation. The Blue Devils, winners of four consecutive games, are also sixth in the country with 20.5 assists per contest while topping 100 points on three occasions this year, and in each of the last two outings.
- Sparking the high-octane UW-Stout offense are Lovell Williams at 18.4 points per game, Armani Tinsley at 13.5, Jon Ciriacks at 11.9, Luke Geiger at 10.1, Brody Fox at 9.7 and Drew Scott at 9.0. Scott is shooting 74.2 percent from the floor.
- The 2021-22 Blue Devils broke Stout's single game scoring record which had been held since 1971 (the 1986 team tied the record). Stout defeated the visiting Greenville Panthers, a team known for their high-scoring games, 125-119. Brody Fox connected on two late game free throws to put this Blue Devil team into the record books. The next time out, the Blue Devils scored 108 points in a win over Finlandia.
- Williams has scored in double digits in 10 of 11 games, has scored more than 20 points four times and scored a career-high 31 points against Buena Vista Unversity. Tinsley has scored in double digits seven times this year, with a season high 30 points at Albion College. Ciriacks has scored in double digits in eight games with a season-high of 20 points twice, vs. Northland College and Alma College. Geiger has also scored in double digits six times this year, with a season-high of 19 points.
- The Blue Devils have opened the season with nine wins in the first 11 games, the first time they have done that since the 2016-17 season when they opened at 8-2 over the first 10 games and opened at 11-2 before finishing the season at 13-13.
- The 57 points that Lakeland scored Dec. 6 is the fewest points allowed in a single game by Stout this year and the fewest points allowed in a single game since Dec. 14, 2018, when Stout defeated Finlandia, 69-56, in Hancock, Mich. It's also the fewest points allowed in Johnson Fieldhouse since Jan. 17, 2018, when Stout defeated UW-Eau Claire, 65-51. Stout scored 50 points against Lakeland in the first half, the first time Stout has had a 50 point first half since scoring 51 points against Edgewood College in 2019 at the St. Norbert Tournament. The last time Stout scored 50 or more first half points in Johnson Fieldhouse was in 2018 with a 96-94 win against Silver Lake College.
- Williams scored 25 points against Albion University, then beat that the next time out with a 31-point effort, the most individual points scored by a Blue Devil since Luke Geiger scored 31 points Nov. 19, 2019. Williams is currently fourth in the WIAC in scoring. But as much as Williams likes to score, he also likes to contribute to his teammates' scoring and is third in the WIAC in assists, averaging 4.4 per game. Williams had a career-best seven assists against Albion.
CLIMBING THE LADDER
- Both Jon Ciriacks and Luke Geiger are making their way up the UW-Stout all-time scoring list. Ciriacks is currently 29th on the list, with 924 points, while Geiger is 35th with 887 career points. Ciriacks is currently 11th on the 3-point made list with 124 and Geiger is not far behind with 112 treys, ranking 15th. Ciriacks is 25th on the all-time rebounds list with 412.
THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS IN PREVIEW
- The Blue Devils return starters guard Armani Tinsley, last year's leading scorer, forward TYreese Alexander, guard Luke Geiger and post Drew Scott.
- In addition, the Blue Devils return forward Jon Ciriacks, who missed five of the nine games last season due to injury and had been a starter the previous two years
- Tinsley and Alexander were WIAC honorable mention picks last season and Ciriacks is a two-time WIAC honorable mention choice.
- Tinsley scored in double-digits in all nine games and was the team's leading 3-point shooter, draining 24 shots from downtown. Alexander finished his second season with the Blue Devils by averaging 8.8 points and matched Geiger with a team-best 4.9 rebounds.
- Ciriacks, Geiger, Alexander and Tinsley have been with the program the longest and they will provide the foundation for the team this season. Ciriacks and Geiger are in their fifth year with the program and Alexander and Tinsley begin their third seasons in Menomonie.
- In limited action last season, Ciriacks, who was injured in the second game and only played in four games, averaged 13.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and continued to step outside to drain 8 of 16 3-pointers. Geiger averaged 10.9 points and hit 14 3-pointers. Scott averaged 16 minutes on the court and pulled down 3.6 rebounds per contest in his first year as a Blue Devil.
- Point guard Lovell Williams, the WIAC newcomer of the year last season, will be a key cog to the Blue Devils' season. Williams averaged 12.0 points per contest, shooting 39 of 76 field goals, shooting 51.3 percent, and 18 of 33 3-point shots for a 54.5 percent success range from beyond the arc.
- Forward Brody Fox returns after seeing action in all nine games and point guard Kyle Williams returned last season after a year off, beginning his third season with the Blue Devils.
- Carson Moe, Preston Briggs, Nick Jungel, Jackson Noll and Cory Hoglund saw limited action last season and Lake expects each to make contributions to the team this year.
- Newcomers to the program include senior transfer Jarnard Smith, Jr., who transferred from Kalamazoo College, Cody Miller, a transfer from NAIA Valley City State, and true freshmen Jacob Walczak, Brenden Weis and Peter Howard.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- UW-Stout broke the century mark for the second straight game as the Blue Devils ran past Finlandia University, 108-75, Tuesday afternoon on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils (9-2) also had six players score in double figures for the second consecutive game as Stout shot out to a 57-39 hafltime lead. While Stout hit 8 of 18 3-pointers, the Blue Devils were dominant in the paint, dropping in 68 points inside the lane compared to 34 for Finlandia (1-15). Stout only trailed briefly after falling behind 2-0 a minute into the game and ballooned the lead up to as much as 26 points in the first half, 52-26, with 4:58 left before intermission. Stout's largest lead of the game came with about three minutes left when Jacob Walczak hit a 3-pointer to give Stout a 36-point, 103-67 lead. Stout was led by Lovell Williams with 24 points. Jackson Noll hit a career-best 14 points, connecting on three 3-pointers. Drew Scott finished with 13 points, and Jon Ciriacks and Brody Fox each dropped in 10 points. Walczak scored nine points for the Blue Devils. Stout held a 51-37 advantage in rebounds, with Ciriacks clearing seven, Luke Geiger and Scott six and Nick Jungel five. Finlandia was led by BJ Williams with 17 points. Rae'quan Funches and Ilrick Higgins-Moise each scored 14 points. Stout forced 28 turnovers by Finlandia with Geiger recording four steals and Williams three. Stout scored 36 points off turnovers. Stout shot 43 of 88 from the field (48.9 percent), 8 of 18 3-pointers (44.4 percent) and 14 of 21 free throws (66.7 percent). SCOUTING RIPON COLLEGE:
- Ripon College (7-3, 3-0 MWC) is supported by four players averaging in double-digits, with a fifth not far behind. Jaylen Mahone is leading the Red Hawks with 12.9 points per game with Ryan Steffes not far behind with 12.7 points. David Delak and Drew Jorgensen are averaging 11.4 and 11.1 points per game, respectively. Delak is leading the team in rebounds with 7.6 per game. Owen Theune is the fifth Red Hawk averaging just shy of 10 points per game with 9.5 points per outing. Luke Meinholz averages 5.5 points off the Ripon College bench on 73.5% shooting from the field.
- Midwest Conference member Ripon College has won five straight games by an average of 12.4 points since falling to both sixth-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) and ninth-ranked UW-La Crosse by a combined five points in back-to-back games in November. The Red Hawks made their 14th NCAA postseason appearance in 2020.
- As a team, the Red Hawks are scoring 73.5 points per game while holding their opponents to only 66. Ripon is shooting 47-percent from the floor (272 for 577)and making nearly 37-percent of their three-pointers (73 for 198). Ripon is out-rebounding opponents by a steady margin too, 36.4-31.3 per game.

THE RED HAWKS LAST TIME OUT:
- The Red Hawks extended their win streak to five games taking down UW-Whitewater and Bethany Luthern on Dec. 17 and 18.
- Ripon's men's basketball team defeated UW-Whitewater 82-77 Friday night in a game that saw the lead change hands three times in the second half. - Less than 24 hours after defeating UW-Whitewater, Ripon's men's basketball team added another non-conference victory to their resume, defeating Bethany Lutheran College 84-69 in a game that the Red Hawks didn't trail after halftime. SCOUTING CALVIN UNIVERSITY:
- Calvin University (6-3, 0-0 MIAA) is lead by Luke Morrison who is averaging a team best 19 points per game. Morrison also leads the team in assists with 23 over 7 games. At his side are Thad Shymanski and Uchenna Egekeze. Shymanski is averaging 16.4 points per game and Egekeze with 11.4. Pulling down the missed shots for the Knights are Emmet Warners and Jordan Katje who are both averaging around 6.5 rebounds per game.
- As a team, the Knights are outscoring opponents by nearly 15 points a game (81.0-66.4). They are shooting 50-percent from the field (210 for 422) and 35-percent from deep (54 for 154).
- Calvin University is one of the traditional Division III powerhouses, making 21 appearances in the NCAA postseason and winning national championships in both 1992 and 2000. The Knights' 21 postseason trips rank 10th in Division III history.
- The Knights are the top scoring team this season in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association at 79.3 points per game. Calvin University, which was receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com poll had won two consecutive games, including a triumph over 14th-ranked Elmhurst College (Ill.), until falling at a Trinity University (Texas) program that was also receiving votes in the national poll last Wednesday (Dec. 22). The Knights' other two losses were to Illinois Wesleyan University and against NAIA member and crosstown rival Cornerstone University (Mich.).
- Calvin University has three double figure scorers of its own in Luke Morrison at 19.1 points per game, Thad Shymanski at 15.1 and Uchenna Egekeze at 11.3. All three players are shooting better than 50% from the floor to help Calvin University to a .485 field goal percentage.

THE KNIGHTS LAST TIME OUT:
- Calvin headed to Texas to participate in the Leslie Robinson Christmas Classic in San Antonio Texas, downing Texas Lutheran, 76-74, in overtime, Dec. 21, but falling to Trinity University, 88-71, the next day. The Knights will play UW-Oshkosh at the Oshkosh tourney, Dec. 29, the day before they meet the Blue Devils.
- The Calvin men's basketball team picked up a from-from-behind 76-74 overtime victory over Texas Lutheran University on day one of the Leslie Robinson Christmas Classic on the campus of Trinity University. Luke Morrison poured in 27 points on 9 of 14 shooting including 4 of 6 from three-point range to go with six rebounds and a pair of assists. Emmett Warners had 16 points including three field goals from beyond the three-point arc. Uchenna Egekeze had 14 points and six boards while Thad Shymanski had 13 points and three assists. - Calvin closed out competition at the Leslie Robinson Christmas Classic with an 88-71 defeat to host Trinity University of Texas. The game came less than 24 hours after the Knights had defeated Texas Lutheran 76-74 in overtime. The host Tigers (10-2) used full-court pressure defense and waves of substitutes to down Calvin. BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played what is believed to be their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH JIM LAKE
- Jim Lake (24-46) is in his fourth season in 2021-22 as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Lake came to Stout after 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State. The Bulldogs won the 2017-18 NCAA Division II national title.
- Lake served at Ferris State University for a total of 10 years, the last five years beginning with the 2013-14 season as the program's top assistant men's basketball coach. Lake had served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs in two different stints over the previous decade, working as a part-time assistant coach from 2011-13 before moving up to the full-time lead position, and as a volunteer assistant coach from 2003-06.
- During five seasons as the Bulldogs' top assistant coach, Lake helped Ferris State to four consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament championships and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, culminating in a 38-1 overall record and the 2018 NCAA Division II national title with a 71-69 win over Northern State University in March.
RIPON COACH RYAN KANE
- Ryan Kane was named the 26th head coach in the history of the Ripon College men's basketball program. In addition to his coaching duties, Kane is also in his third year as Director of Athletics at Ripon College.
- In his nine seasons as head coach, Kane has led Ripon to a 133-69 overall record, which includes an 102-46 record in conference games. The Red Hawks have appeared in the four-team MWC Tournament seven times during Kane's tenure, winning the Tournament in 2017 and 2020 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament in both years.
- The Red Hawks have won at least 15 games in seven consecutive seasons (not counting the COVID-19 shortened 2020-21 season). They have compiled a 63-23 home record during Kane's tenure, making Weiske Gymnasium one of the toughest places to play in the MWC.
- During his tenure at Ripon, Kane's teams have set single season school records for points (2,174), 3-pointers made (218), and free throw percentage (.797). In the 2016-17 season, Ripon led all 416 NCAA Division-III men's basketball teams in both field goal percentage (.516) and 3-point percentage (.452).
- Kane came to Ripon after spending four years as the top assistant coach at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he coordinated all aspects of the recruiting process and was instrumental in the development of seven All-Conference selections and one All-Region performer. Prior to his time at Loras, Kane spent one year as an assistant coach at MWC-rival Lawrence University and a five-year stint at Dominican University in River Forest, Ill., while also coaching one year at Ashwaubenon High School.
CALVIN COACH BILL SALL
- Bill Sall is in his first year as the head coach at Calvin College. He becomes the 12th head coach in the history of a program that will celebrate its 100th year next season.
- Sall replaces the recently retired Kevin Vande Streek (who served 23 years at the Calvin helm).
- This past year, Sall led the Northern Michigan men's basketball team to a 17-12 record and a berth in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals. His team was regionally ranked heading into the final week of the NCAA Division II regular season. At Northern he took over a program that had experienced six consecutive losing seasons and rebuilt the Wildcats into a winning program. In 2017-18, he led Northern to a 15-13 record and a third-place finish in the GLIAC North Division before fashioning a 17-12 mark and a second-consecutive third-place finish in the GLIAC North Division this season.
- Prior to his tenure at Northern Michigan, he served as head coach of the Ferris State men's basketball program for 11 years, and all told he has 26 years of collegiate men's basketball coaching experience, having also served as an assistant men's coach at Calvin, Ferris State and Hillsdale College.
- At Ferris State, Sall led the Bulldogs to four Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division titles (2003-04, 2004-5, 2010-11, 2011-12) and a trio of NCAA Division II Tournament trips (2004-05, 2005-06, 2010-11), reaching a pair of regional championship games. His overall record at Ferris State was 171-145 (127-85 GLIAC)
- Sall's coaching career at Calvin began with Douma from 1992-95. The Knights made two NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances, claimed the 1993-94 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship, and were 37-17 (.685) during his two seasons as an assistant coach.
- Stout coach, Jim Lake, and Sall have some coaching history together. They coached at Ferris State together during Lake's time there from 2003-2006, and again from 2011-2014 before Sall left for Northern Michigan.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. The Blue Devils were picked to finish seventh in a preseason poll conducted by league coaches and sports information directors. UW-Platteville was projected to win the conference, with UW-Oshkosh second, UW-La Crosse third, UW-Whitewater fourth, UW-River Falls fifth, UW-Eau Claire sixth and UW-Stevens Point eighth.
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
