Blue Devils move into tie for second, Filipiak in first after second day

2021 WIAC Women's Golf Championship

REEDSBURG (October 9, 2021) - UW-Stout moved into a tie for second place and Abbey Filipiak climbed into the top spot after the second day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Golf Championship at Reedsburg Country Club Saturday.

Filipiak, who came into the second day of the tournament in tie for second, played a birdie on the last hole of the day to finish with a 76, matching her first day score. Filipiak rebounded from bogey on Hole 17 to play a 3 on the par-4, 291-yard Hole 18. In addition to the final hole birdie, Filipiak played 12 holes even and finished with five bogeys, with only two on the back nine. Filipiak (76-76 - 152) leads UW-Eau Claire's Lexi Meade (74-79 - 143) and UW-Whitewater's Lily Sheppard (80-74 - 154). 

While Kendra Swanson dropped from sixth to seventh after the second day, she took off one stroke from day one to help Stout move up in the team standings, starting with an 80 and broke 80 on the second day with a 79 for a two-day 159. Swanson scored two birdies on the day, on the par-3, 149-yard Hole 3 and the par-4, 322-yard Hole 14. 

Sydney Grimm slipped to 12th from sixth, pairing her first day 80 with her second day 83 to make a 163 after two days. Grimm played the final two holes of the day even.

Both Madeline Kiley and Grace Warrner took big-time leaps in their scores. Kiley moved up six places and is tied for 34th with three other golfers (91-87 - 178). Warrner took off 11 strokes moving up to 45th (97-86 - 183) from 56th. Warrner finished the day strong, scoring a birdie on the par-4, 358-yard Hole 17, playing two even holes on both sides of the birdie.

As a team, the Blue Devils scored a 324 on the second day and combined with their first day 327, tallied a two-day score of 651, tying UW-Eau Claire for second. The Blugolds (321-330 - 651) were in first after the first day. UW-Whitewater made a big jump in the standings. The four-time defending conference champions scored a 311 on the second day, 12 strokes less than their opening round to move from third to first, to take a 17-stroke lead with a two-day score of 634, .

UW-La Crosse was fourth (331-324 - 655), UW-Oshkosh in fifth (322-334 - 656), UW-River Falls in sixth (345-356 - 701), UW-Stevens Point in seventh (349-356 - 705) and UW-Platteville was eighth (357-352 - 709). 

The third and final day of competition is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 10.
