Soccer Preview: Blue Devils travel to Eau Claire Wednesday, host La Crosse Saturday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (9-4-1, 1-1-0 WIAC) will travel to UW-Eau Claire (5-6-2, 0-2-0 WIAC), Wednesday, Oct.13 at 7:30 p.m., then will host UW-La Crosse (10-2-1, 3-0-0 WIAC) for homecoming, Saturday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.  Stout was ranked eighth in the Oct. 12 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Region IX rankings. 

ON-LINE: All of Stout's home games are expected to be available in a live video stream and in live stats.

PETS: While service animals are welcome, no pets are allowed at UW-Stout athletic events.

A LOOK AT THE 2021 BLUE DEVILS: The Blue Devils opened the conference season with an overtime 2-1 win over UW-Platteville, Oct. 1, when Marissa Steele scored with less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime period for the win. Steele is the Blue Devils' points leader, tallying a career-best four goals and six assists. Steele is not afraid to shoot the ball, taking 33 overall shots and 19 shots on goal. Steele's sixth assists is tied for first in the WIAC. Lexi Boyd and Liv Winkler are Stout's goals leader with five, ranking ninth in the WIAC.  Remy Soulak, Carly Kauffman and Caylee Boone each have three assists, tied for ninth in the WIAC. Soulak and Kauffman each have two goals. Rachel Younker and Hailey Kane each have one goal and one assist. Blue Devil goalkeeper Haley Vokaty (7-4-1) sits among the WIAC leaders in goals against average (0.91/2nd), shutouts (4/2nd) and save percentage (.756/7th).   | 2021 Statistics


THE BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: UW-Oshkosh scored once in each half and gave UW-Stout their first conference loss of the season Saturday at JJ Keller Field. The Titans got on the board first in the 28th minute with a goal by Molly Jackson, then doubled their point total with a goal in the 63rd minute by Mallory Knight. Oshkosh did not allow a shot on goal all afternoon, outshooting the Blue Devils 15-6 overall and 7-0 on net, giving Stout Haley Vokaty five saves on the day. Anna Herzog had two shots to lead Stout, while three other Blue Devils had one shot each. Knight and Jackson each had three shots for the Titans, with Knight putting two shots on frame. Besides shots, most of the other team statistics were fairly even, with Oshkosh holding a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks, both teams called offside once each and Stout held a slight 10-8 edge in fouls called.  UW-Stout's Liv Winkler scored her fifth goal of the season and Lauren Chukel scored her first collegiate goal as the Blue Devils captured their sixth shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over Bethel University Oct. 6 at Nelson Field. The Blue Devils pretty much controlled the entire field from the get-go, outshooting Bethel 15-3 overall and 8-3 on net. A LOOK AT UW-EAU CLAIRE:  Megan Hansen and  Emma Stange have each scored four goals to lead the Blugolds. Hansen has added a pair of assists. Hannah Schaetzel has contributed three goals. In net, Anna Sveiven and Kennedy Boll have split time. Boll has a goals against average of 1.41 and Sveiven a GAA of 1.53. THE LAST TIME EAU CLAIRE AND STOUT MET: The UW-Stout soccer team saw their season end on a sour note. On a cold, fall afternoon, the Blue Devils hosted UW-Eau Claire on the Blugolds' own field and Eau Claire carried out a 6-0 win over the Blue Devils Nov. 2, 2019, at Bollinger Field. In their 18th consecutive road game this season, the Blue Devils did not get off a shot and Eau Claire did. Both teams went 20 minutes without a shot. Eau Claire scored twice in the first half, then scattered four goals in the second half.  Claudia Anderson had nine saves for the Blue Devils. A LOOK AT UW-LA CROSSE:  The Eagles have six players who have scored three or more goals this season, led by Ainsley Allen and Sophie Amuncson with six each. Sydney Halstead has three goals and Natlie Schisel leads the team in assists with four. Quinn Shannon has worked the most minutes in goal and is posting a 1.01 GAA. The Eagles are carrying a four-game winning streak into Wednesday's game. The Eagles have posted six shutouts this season.   |  Season Statistics

THE EAGLES LAST TIME OUT: La Crosse will be at Wheaton College, Wednesday, Oct. 13. La Crosse earned its fifth shutout victory of the season with a 3-0 win over UW-Eau Claire Oct. 9 at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. It is UWL's eighth win in its last nine games overall, including second straight shutout. UWL earned a 2-0 win over Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Wednesday night. The Eagles have won their last four games overall and improved to 5-1-1 at home this season.  The Eagles got on the board on Ainsley Allan's goal at 42:13 to make it 1-0 with an assist from Alexis McMahon. UWL led, 1-0, at halftime while outshooting UW-Eau Claire, 16-8. UWL took a 2-0 lead at 48:54 on Sophie Amundson's first of two goals.  Chelsea Gale recorded the assist.  Amundson made it 3-0 with a penalty kick goal at 51:56. UWL finished with 23 shots Saturday night with 12 on goal. Amundson had five shots, including four on goal. Allan totaled four shots with three on goal. THE LAST TIME LA CROSSE AND STOUT MET: UW-Stout kept UW-La Crosse scoreless in the second half, but the Eagles could afford to sit back on offense after scoring four first half goals and went on to down the Blue Devils, 4-0, Oct. 23, 2019. The Eagles' Hayley Hargroder scored twice in the first eight minutes of the game to give La Crosse a 2-0 lead. The Eagles' Sophie Amundson and Camryn Hart scored in teh 24th and 30th minutes, respectively. Claudia Anderson recorded 10 saves for Stout as the Eagles outshot Stout 31-4 overall and 14-2 on net. | Game Story and Stats

THE SERIES: The Eagles lead the series 20-7-3 and have won the last six meetings. Stout's last win over the Eagles came Nov. 5, 2013, in the first round of the WIAC playoffs, a 1-0 win in Menomonie.  |  History

AWARDS: 2021: Marissa Steele was the WIAC/Kwik Trip athlete of the week and the UW-Stout athlete of the week, Sept. 14, after scoring two game winning goals against St. Scholastica and Cornell College...Liv Winkler was the UW-Stout athlete of the week after scoring a goal in each of the first two games of the season, including the game winner in the season opener against Concordia-Moorhead...2020: no season.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Blue Devil team captains for the 2021 season are Lexie Wescott, Caylee Boone and Marissa Steele.

UW-STOUT COACH RYAN RAUFUS: Coach Ryan Raufus (69-89-20) is in his 11th year as the head coach of the Blue Devils in 2021. Raufus played his college ball at Springfield College in Massachusetts and came to Stout after coaching at La Crosse Logan High School and La Crescent, Minn., High School. 

2019 ROAD WARRIORS: The Blue Devils were road warriors in 2019, with every single game a bus trip tallying more than 3000 bus miles on the season. Four conference games that were originally to be played in Menomonie were moved and Stout played "home" games with UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh and Minnesota-Morris at UW-River Falls, while "home" games with UW-Whitewater and UW-Eau Claire were played in Eau Claire.

TWENTY-FIVE-PLUS YEARS OF BLUE DEVIL SOCCER: After many years as a club sport, UW-Stout became the ninth WIAC team to join the varsity ranks during the 1995 season. The Blue Devils took their lumps to open the season, making their premiere by hosting Augsburg College, Sept. 10, in a 7-0 loss. Stout opened the conference season three days later at Nelson Field, hosting perennial conference powerhouse UW-Stevens Point, dropping a 6-0 decision. The Blue Devils finally broke onto the scoreboard in their third game. While hosting UW-Platteville, Sept. 17, Kari Stapleton scored in the 70th minute on an assist from Jenny Tyson in a 2-1 loss. The Blue Devils would get their first-ever win, a 3-0 decision at Martin Luther College, Sept. 23, collecting goals from Amie Frasier, Tyson and Joann Sognesand. Defender Andrea Schroeder was a second team all-conference selection in 1995, then was selected to the first team in 1996. Members of that first 1995 team include: April Amys, Beeta Bastani, Tammy Beuch, Carrie Blaska, Jen Chapple, Michelle Coon, Amie Frasier, Aimee Grimm, Jamie Jester, Julie Kremer, Dorian Loberg, Amy Lyons, Kristin Manion, Angela McDowell, Andrea Schroeder, Joann Sognesand, Kari Stapleton, Jenny Tyson, Alisa Zimmerman. DOWN THE ROAD: Stout will close the home portion of the schedule when they host UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m., then will travel to UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.
