GENEVA, Ohio (May 28, 2022) - UW-Stout's Jacob Bugella wrapped up his Division III career by earning his second consecutive outdoor All-America medal in the hammer throw Saturday at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championship.

Bugella, who is planning to attend graduate school at the University of Wisconsin and competing on the Badgers' track and field team, placed third in the hammer with a mark of 196-feet, 6-inches (59.90m).

The hammer throw competition was tight throughout the afternoon. After the fifth round, the top five performers had marked their best throw up to that point in the opening round. Bugella marked a 193-4 and was in third throughout the first five rounds. On the sixth and final round, Bugella threw the 196-6 and briefly jumped ahead of Carthage's Matt Aussie into second. But on Aussie's final throw, he passed Bugella with a mark of 197-8 to regain second place. Jude Misko of Rutgers-Camden led from the first round on, hitting a 198-2 to win the event. He threw 198-0 on his final attempt. The top five finishers, including UW-Platteville's Justin Eichler who finished fifth, marked a 192-foot throw or better. UW-Stevens Point's Blake Orr was the odd-man out, finishing ninth.

For Bugella, it was his third All-America medal. The Rice Lake native finished sixth in the weight throw at the 2022 indoor national meet this spring and was second in the hammer at the 2021 outdoor championship.

Blue Devil pole vaulter Jacob Backes finished 18th in his second national meet and his first outdoor meet. The Osakis, Minn., native cleared the opening height of 14-feet, 9-inches (4.50), but went out at 15-3. Luke Scric of MIT won the event (16-8.75/5.10m) and UW-Eau Claire's Abraham Schroedl was second (16-6.75/5.05m).

With Bugella's six points from the third place finish and Kevin Ruechel's 14 points from his second and third place finishes, Stout gathered 20 team points to tie for 11th. UW-Eau Claire won the team event, while UW-La Crosse was fourth and UW-Oshkosh 10th.
