Baseball Preview: Doubleheaders at Whitewater moved to Sunday, Monday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES:  UW-Stout (15-15, 10-10 WIAC) is scheduled to travel to No. 9 UW-Whitewater (25-6, 17-3 WIAC) this weekend for two doubleheader match-ups. Those doubleheaders have been moved to Sunday, May 1 and Monday, May 2. First pitch is scheduled for noon on both days.

The games were originally scheduled to be played Saturday and Sunday.

A QUICK LOOK AT THIS PAST WEEK: The Blue Devils were unable to pick up a game against UW-La Crosse this past week, falling 11-3, 5-4, 14-3, 10-0 to the visiting Eagles. Charlie Szykowny hit two home runs in the first game and Riley Boushack and Colin Hageman both picked up home runs in the second game. The first two games were played at Wakanda Park, April 23 and the final two were played at Nelson Field, the first time Nelson Field was used this year for a game. The Warhawks captured all four games from Finlandia University, April 23-24, downing the Lions, 15-2, 11-4, 13-1, 14-4, and swept UW-Stevens Point, 4-1, 9-1, April 26. Whitewater moved in front of Stevens Point with the wins.

UW-STOUT: Four Stout batter are averaging over .300 with one not too far beneath the cut. Leading the way is Joel Thimsen, with a batting average of .407. Thimsen has picked up 44 hits at 108 at-bats and leads the team with 12 doubles. Next is Charlie Szykowny with a .397 batting average. Szykowny leads the WIAC with 13 home runs and .833 slugger percentage. Sykowny leads the team in RBIs with 43. Jack Schirpke (.333) and Jacoby Endreas (.321) are next in line. Schirpke has picked up 22 hits at 93 at-bats and has recorded six doubles and two home runs. Endreas has picked up 25 hits on 78 at-bats and has five doubles and five home runs. Levi Wilson is right under the .300 mark batting .293. Wilson leads the team in walks, getting 22 bases on balls.

PATIENCE, GENTLEMEN, PATIENCE: Levi Wilson has drawn a team-high 22 walks so far this year. Joel Thimsen has drawn 20 walks, Charlie Szykowny 15 and Colin Hageman 12, and Jacoby Endreas nine. Szykowny has drawn five intentional walks and Endreas, two, both coming on the same day. 

BLUE DEVIL PITCHING: Jace Baumann (4.98 ERA, 43.1 IP, 37K), Cody Urban (5.12 ERA, 455.2 IP, 24K), Drew Buss (6.82 ERA, 31.2 IP, 34K), and Ethan Kjellberg (6.90 ERA, 30.0 IP, 22K) have drawn the majority of the starts on the mound. Dak Doyle (7.82 ERA, 12.2 IP, 10K), Charlie Szykowny (11.57 ERA, 7.0 IP, 11K) and Connor Hemme (4.50 ERA, 8.0 IP, 7K)  each have a win and a save. Luke Kallod notched his first career save against Platteville and picked up his first win of the season against UW-Stevens Point.

CLIMBING THE LADDER: Charlie Szykowny's 13 home runs is two shy of tying the Blue Devils' single season record of 15, held by Brad O'Connell (2000) and Ryan Freitag (2014). Szykowny has 17 career home runs, tied with Kasey Bass for 19th. Szykowny has recorded three triples in each of the 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons, bringing his total to nine career triples, one shy of tying the school record of 10 owned by Brandon O'Connell (2008-11). He is currently tied with Santiago Morales (2012-13) and Brad O'Connell (1998-2001). Szykowny currently has 34 career doubles, ranking fourth. Seth Maier (2003, 2005-07) holds the record with 50 doubles. Szykowny is currently tied for 10th in career runs scored with 110. Szykowny's 43 RBI is currently 10th on the single season season list. John Filas drove in 54 runs in 1989 to lead the category. Joel Thimsen currently has 34 career doubles and is tied for ninth on the all-time Stout list. 

WIAC STATS: The Blue Devils have several players in the WIAC top 10 in individual statistical categories. Charlie Szykowny is seventh in batting average (.397), first in slugging percentage (.833), seventh in on-base percentage (.472), first in OPS (1.305), fourth in runs scored (38), third in hits (30), second in RBI (43), fourth in doubles (10), second in triples (3), first in home runs (13). Joel Thimsen is sixth in average (.407), ninth in slugging percentage (.593), third in on-base percentage (.503), sixth in hits (44), fifth in RBI (33), second in doubles (12). UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT:  UW-Stout got a little closer to getting an actual home game, but could not parlay the day into wins and UW-La Crosse defeated the Blue Devils 11-3, 5-4, at Wakanda Park Sunday. SCOUTING UW-WHITEWATER: The ninth-ranked Whitewater showcases some strong hitters with six batter batting over .300. Sam Vomhof (.425), Bennet Frazer (.366), Nick Paget (.359), Zach Campbell (.342), and Matt Scolan (.318). Vomhof leads the team in hits with 51 and doubles with nine. Jacob DeMeyer leads the team with 29 RBIs, coming off seven doubles, one triple, and four home runs. Paget also has had some big hits, recording eight doubles, three triples, and three home runs. From the mound, Whitewater has three undeafeated pitchers, Kade Lancour (1.93 ERA, 51.1 IP, 61K), Cade Berendt (2.56 ERA, 38.2 IP, 53K), and Cam Anfang (3.35 ERA, 37.2 IP, 49K). Westin Muir is 7-1 from the mound and leads the team with 64 strike outs with a 2.40 ERA.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Ninth-ranked Whitewater  took sole possession of first place in the WIAC standings Tuesday thanks to a pair of wins against No. 15 UW-Stevens Point at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. LAST TIME THEY MET: After dropping a seven-inning, 12-1, opening decision to UW-Whitewater at Nelson Field, the UW-Stout baseball showed some muscle in the second game, but ultimately the eight-ranked Warhawks claimed the day with an 11-5 second game win. Kasey Bass, Hunter Merril and Drew Ries all put the ball in the wetlands on the other side of the outfield fence, helping the Blue Devils to a 5-0 lead after the third inning.  Stout has lost 27 straight games to the Warhawks. AWARDS AND HONORS: 2022:  Joel Thimsen was named the WIAC/Kwik Trip position player of the week April 5 after hitting 13 RBI over eight games as the Blue Devils swept UW-Platteville and UW-Eau Claire to open the conference season...Charlie Szykowny was named the WIAC/Kwik Trip position player of the week and the NCBWA honorable mention hitter of the week after driving in 18 runs and hitting five home runs during Stout's Florida.

COACHES: Ben Kincaid (80-106) is in his sixth year as the Blue Devils' head coach with the 2022 season, following two years as a Blue Devil assistant coach where he worked primarily with the pitchers. Kincaid played collegiately at at Minnesota State University-Mankato, where he was a four year letter winner, playing in 149 games. He finished with a .339 batting average, 38 doubles (5th on MSU's career list), six home runs and 140 runs batted in (6th on MSU's career list). As a right-handed pitcher he sported a 14-8 record with a 3.45 earned run average and had 148 strikeouts in 172 innings pitched. Kincaid was named to the All-Central Region team three times in his career. An Eau Claire native, Kincaid played for the local Eau Claire Express. (Ben Kincaid was 65-91 to start 2022 season)


2021 BLUE DEVILS: Stout finished the 2021 season at 23-19 overall, 16-12 in the WIAC, and advanced to the WIAC tournament, where they played four games, heading into the final day of the tournament. | 2021 Statistics

DOWN THE ROAD:  Stout is scheduled to host Ripon College, Wednesday, May 4 in a non-conference doubleheader. The Blue Devils will close out the regular season by hosting Finlandia University, Friday, May 6 at noon at Nelson Field for Senior Day. The games move to Wakanda Park in North Menomonie, Saturday, May 7.
