Couves, Becker net first round upset on first day of WIAC Championship

MADISON (October 22, 2022) - Lauren Couves and Ellie Becker scored a first round upset on the first day of the 2022 Wisconsin Interecollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Tennis Championship at Nielsen Tennis Center Saturday.

Couves and Becker earned a sixth seed at No. 1 doubles and were facing off against third seeded Kellie Hierl and Katie Kearney of UW-La Crosse. The match needed to go to a tie-breaker after regular play was knotted at 7-7. Couves and Becker won the tie-breaker, 9-7, to capture the match, 8-7. Couves and Becker had defeated Hierl and Kearny during the regular season dual, downing the Eagles' team, 8-5, Oct. 2 in La Crosse.  The Blue Devil duo next took on second-seeded Autumn Bruno and Cassie Lee of UW-Whitewater, falling 8-0. 

Couves and Becker will meet UW-Stevens Point's Quinlyn Mack and Tristin Jantz in the third place match. The Pointer team earned a fourth seed.

In No. 2 doubles, Kyrstin Hanson and Ella Lamppa lost both matches as did No. 3 doubles, Kylie Rennie and Ashlyn Dellemann.

The final day of competition will conclude, Sunday, Oct. 23 when action begins at 9 a.m. with the final two rounds of singles, followed by the last round of doubles.
