THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (7-11-0, 5-4-0 WIAC) return to the Fanetti Community Center to host UW-Eau Claire (7-11-0, 3-6-0 WIAC) in a weekend series, Jan. 28-29. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils defeated the Blugolds 4-2 when the teams met in Eau Claire, Nov. 20, 2021. With that win in November, the Blue Devils snapped a seven-game losing streak to Eau Claire.

TONIGHT'S GAME: UW-Stout (7-12-0, 5-5-0 WIAC) and UW-Eau Claire (8-11-0, 4-6-0 WIAC) are in the midst of a three-game series and the teams have split, with Stout winning in November and the Blugolds last night.
A LOOK AT UW-STOUT: Dylan Rallis leads the Blue Devils with 15 points (8g, 7a). Last year's leading scorer and team captain Raphael Gosselin is right behind Rallis with 13 points (6g/7a). Caleb Serre is the team's assists leader with 11 and he has one goal. Peyton Hart has six goals and five assists. Logan Nelson has four goals and seven assists. Matt Dahlseide has three goals and seven assist and Alex Nagel has two goals and six assists. Riley Enderle has popped in four goals. In net, Zack Cloutier is 3-4-0 with a GAA of 3.01 with a saves percentage of .912. Brennan Kitchen is looking for his first win and has a GAA of 3.84 with a saves percentage of .868. Stout is averaging 2.9 goals per contest and giving up 3.9. On the power play, Stout is 13.5 percent (10-74).
A LOOK AT UW-EAU CLAIRE: The Blugolds are led by Connor Szmul leads the team with nine points, scoring four goals and five assists. Quinn Green is leading the Blugolds in goals scored with six, while Jon Richards is leading in assists with seven. In net for the Blugolds has been Ryan Oullette (7-6-0), who worked last night's game. Oullette has a 2.21 GAA with a saves percent of .906. When Oullette is not betwen the pipes, the Blugolds call upon Riley McVeigh, who has a GAA of 2.86 and a save percentage of .878. McVeigh has recorded one win and five losses while in net. The Blugolds split a series with UW-Superior last week, falling 3-0, before coming back for a 4-1 decision. The Blugolds are averaging 2.3 goals and giving up 2.4. On the power play, the Blugolds are 17.2 percent (10-58).
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire scored two empty net goals in the final 1:04 to take the second game of the I-94 rivalry. UW-Stout took the first game earlier this year in November. In the first period, both teams went back and forth dishing shots out, but were unsuccessful at getting on the board first. At 8:22 of the period, Stout went on the first power play of the game. The Blue Devils were putting shots on net, but Blugold's Ouellete saved the penalty kill. Until Blue Devil's Matt Dahlseide found the back of the net scoring the first goal of the game. The power play goal was assisted by Peyton Hart and Alex Nagel and Stout led 1-0. But the Blugolds found the back of the net after Stout's Cloutier got screened. The goal was scored at 12:43 of the period by Jarrad Vroman and assisted by Peter Jacobs. The Blue Devils saw one more power play opportunity with 4:51 left in the period, but Eau Claire killed off the penalty. After one period, the score remained 1-1 with shots in favor of the Blue Devils, 10-6. In the second period, Eau Claire went on their first power play at 2:20 of the period. During the power play, Blugold's, Ty Readman found the back of the net and Eau Claire now led 2-1. On the power play, Jon Richards and Jarrad Vroman assisted on the goal. Eau Claire had two power play opportunities at 6:45 and 11:03 of the period, but this time, Stout killed off both penalties. Nearing the end of the second period, Stout found themselves on a power play with 1:57 left to go in the period. During that time, Stout did not score and would have three seconds left on the power play to start the third period. At the start of the period, Eau Claire killed off the penalty. At 1:03 of the period, the Blugolds went on a power play themselves, but the Blue Devils killed off the penalty. At 3:31 of the period, Eau Claire went on another power play and Stout killed off another penalty. At 10:27 of the period, Stout went on a power play. The Blue Devils had chances to score, but Eau Claire killed off the penalty. With only 1:45 left in the game, Stout pulled their goalie to get an extra attacker. But the Blugold's Peter Jacobs shot it from half ice and scored an empty net goal with 1:04 left in the game. With 42 seconds left, Eau Claire's Ryan Green scored another empty net goal to make the final 4-1. Blue Devil's Zack Cloutier ended the game with 33 saves, while Blugold's Ryan Oullette got the win, saving 17 shots.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS:
- Dylan Rallis jumps to the top of the scoring list after his two-goal outing against Northland College last week. Rallis now has 15 points (8g, 8a). Last year's leading scorer and team captain Raphael Gosselin is right behind Rallis with 13 points (6g/7a). Since the calendar has turned, Gosselin has scored a goal in four of six games and has also accounted for four assists in 2022 alone. In the first 12 games of the season, Gosselin scored two goals and two assists and in the last six games he has scored four goals and five assists. Gosselin has a team-high three power play goals. Freshman Caleb Serre is next on the list with 12 points, as he leads Stout with 11 assists and scored his first collegiate goal against St. Olaf College two weeks ago. Other leading scorers for Stout are Logan Nelson with four goals and seven assists, Peyton Hart with six goals and four assists and Matt Dalhseide with two goals and nine assists. Alec Skar scored his first goal of the season, the game winner against Bethel University, and now has three goals to go along with four assists. Riley Enderle has scored four goals and Kobe Keller has dished off five assists. Cole Beckstead has three goals and Alex Nagel, Matt Dahlseide, Matt Flodell, Joey Petronack and Nick Bowlin have each added two goals.
- Gosselin leads the team in power play goals with three. Stout has gotten power play goals from newcomers Matt Flodell, Peyton Hart and John Jebamani, as well as Peter Verstegen and Logan Nelson. The Blue Devils scored two shorthanded goals against Northland College, Jan. 20, with Alec Skar and Verstegan scoring back-to-back shorties. Rallis scored shorthanded Nov. 5 against St. Scholastica, Stout's first shorthanded goal since the 2018-19 season. Alex Nagel scored shorthanded against UW-River Falls, Dec. 10, and Hart scored shorthanded against River Falls, Jan. 11.
- Stout has five goalies this season and freshman Tyler Masternak has snared four of Stout's seven wins. The freshman is posting a GAA of 3.28 with a saves percentage of .902. Zack Cloutier has picked up the other three wins, and matches Masternak's GAA with 3.18 and a saves percentage of .906. Brennan Kitchen has a GAA of 3.84 with a saves percentage of .868. Masternak and Cloutier each have been credited with an assist on a goal this year.
- The Blue Devils finished the abbreviated 2020-21 season at 4-7 overall. The Blue Devils averaged 2.75 goals per game and gave up 3.6 goals. Stout is 6-29 (20.9 percent) on the power play and 7-27 (74.1) on the penalty kill.
- The Blue Devils return their top seven scorers and nine of their top 10 scorers from last season.
- Raphael Gosselin returns as the team's leading scorer from last season, leads the team in points, posting four goals and seven assists for 11 points.
- Kobe Keller led Stout in goals scored with five, of which two were power play goals, and added a pair of assists. Logan Nelson, a three-time all-WIAC honorable mention pick, returns after scoring four goals and three assists. Matt Dahlseide and Peter Verstegan each scored two goals and four assists. Defenseman Joey Petronack had a goal and five assists as a freshman, earning honorable mention honors. Alex Nagel was just behind Gosselin in assists, dishing off six. Alex Stuckert had a goal and three assists, while Brandon Connett had two goals, both power play goals, and an assist during his freshman season.
- Twenty different players scored at least one point last season.
- The Blue Devils return two all-conference goalies in Brennan Kitchen and Zack Cloutier. Kitchen earned honorable mention honors in 2019-20 and Cloutier earned first team honors last season when he set a single season record for goals against average (GAA) with a 1.63 mark. Tyler Masternak joins the Blue Devils' goalie crew that also includes returners Brady Meyers and Marco Zink.
- Stout returns five players who have earned All-WIAC honors at least once throughout their career. Senior forward Logan Nelson has been selected WIAC honorable mention all three years. Junior goalie Brennan Kitchen was a honorable mention pick in 2019-20. Senior forward Raphael Gosselin earned first team honors last season, as did sophomore goalie Zach Cloutier. Sophomore defenseman Joey Petronack was an honorable mention selection last spring.
- The Blue Devils have seven seniors, eight juniors, eight sophomores and 11 freshmen on their 2021-22 roster.
BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- The Blue Devils swept Northland College, downing the Lumberjacks, 5-3, Jan. 20, and 6-3, Jan. 22.
- The Blue Devils used two shorthanded goals to uplift Stout to their 8th point in the WIAC standings. UW-Stout scored five goals in the contest downing the Lumberjacks. In the first period, it was Northland University scoring the first goal of the game. - Northland College matched UW-Stout's first three goals one-by-one, but the Blue Devils turned on the jets in the final 12 minutes of the game to double up on Northland College, 6-3, Saturday at Bay Area Civic Center. The score was tied 2-2 after the second period. Dylan Rallis, with his second goal of the evening, gave Stout a 3-2 lead at 1:29 of the third period, but as had been the practice earlier in the game, Northland matched Stout's goal when Eddie Gallagher scored his second goal of the night to tie the score 3-3 at 5:51. Alec Skar opened the door for the Blue Devils just over two minutes later. The defense shut the Lumberjacks out and Stout took a two goal lead on a goal by Peyton Hart, with assists by Matt Dahlseide and Nick Bowlin at 14:18. - Eau Claire was selected to win the 2021-22 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's ice hockey championship, according to a preseason poll conducted by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. UW-Superior claimed the regular-season title a season ago by winning the Commissioner's Cup. It was the eighth overall championship – first since 2011 – and the first Commissioner's Cup crown. UW-River Falls owns a league high 19 regular-season championships, while UW-Stevens Point has 14 and UW-Stout one. UW-Eau Claire is followed in the predictions by: UW-Stevens Point; UW-River Falls; UW-Superior; UW-Stout; and Northland College.

- 2020-21: Goalie Zack Cloutier was selected as the Kwik Trip/WIAC Athlete of the Week and The Heights/UW-Stout Athlete of the Week.
- 2019-20: Goalie Brennan Kitchen, defenseman Connor Chambers and forward Logan Nelson earned WIAC honorable mention honors. Lucas Carroll was selected to the all-sportsmanship team...Brennan Kitchen was selected as the WIAC hockey athlete of the week after stopping 55 shots in a 4-0 shutout over Northland College, Jan. 25. UW-STOUT COACH MIKE MACDONALD
- The 2021-22 season marks Mike MacDonald's (11-19-0) second season as the Blue Devils' head coach. (began the 2021-22 season at 4-7-0)
- Before coming to Stout, MacDonald coached four seasons at Curry College, near Boston, Mass. Prior to joining Curry, he spent a year as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.
- MacDonald graduated from the SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Business Administration in 2007. During his time at Geneseo, the team posted a record of 67-33-11, winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2005 and 2006. Over his collegiate career, MacDonald appeared in 109 games and is among the school's all-time leaders in goals (61) and points (120).
- MacDonald played six seasons professionally. He began his professional career in the Central Hockey League, spending one season each with the Odessa Jackalopes and New Mexico Scorpions. The following four seasons he played primarily for the Southern Professional Hockey League's Huntsville Havoc. While there he served as the team's captain for three seasons. In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal to give Huntsville its first ever SPHL Championship. Over his career, MacDonald appeared in 338 professional games with 213 points on 84 goals and 129 assists.
- MacDonald is a native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.
UW-EAU CLAIRE COACH MATT LOEN
- Matt Loen (224-135-30) is in his 15th season as head coach for UW-Eau Claire.
- Last season Loen led the Blugolds to a second place WIAC regular season finish and a record of 4-3-1. Due to COVID-19, the NCAA cancelled all winter championships taking place in the spring of 2021.
- In 2017-2018, Loen was named WIAC Co-Coach of the Year, an honor he has earned six times in the last nine years. He also received the honor in 2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13, 2014-15 and 2016-17. In 2012-2013, Loen and the Blugolds captured the NCAA Division III National Championship in Lake Placid, New York. That year, Loen was named the USCHO and D3Hockey.com National Coach of the Year. The Blugolds also won the NCHA and WIAC Conference Championships.
- Loen ranks 6th on the all-time WIAC Coaches Wins List. He has also been named NCHA Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2013. Loen is the school's all-time leader in wins with an overall record 190-117-27. Under Loen, a number of Blugolds have earned post-season honors. He coached 10 first team All-NCHA and 12 NCHA honorable mentions recipients, with a total of 34 NCHA All-Academic. In the WIAC he has coached 27 first team All-WIAC and 23 honorable mentions and three WIAC Scholar-Athlete. He has coached five All-Americans and one Academic All-American.
- Loen played in over 500 games professionally. He was named Rookie of the Year in the United Hockey League (UHL) for the Madison Monsters. He played for Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the American Hockey League (AHL), the top farm team for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the Milwaukee Admirals of the International Hockey League (IHL), the top team in Nashville Predators' farm system. He is a multiple-time minor league All-Star.
THE CONFERENCE:
- UW-Stout is a member of the six-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls. Northland College joined the league last season. UW-Eau Claire was picked to win the league title, according to a preseason poll conducted by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Stevens Point was chosen second, UW-River Falls third, UW-Superior fourth, UW-Stout fifth and Northland sixth.

LENDING AN ASSIST: in the 2021-22 season, goalie Zack Cloutier dished an assist Oct. 30, 2021 against Concordia-Wis...Tyler Masternak recorded his first collegiate assist against Bethel University, Jan. 7, 2022...Goalie Zack Cloutier chalked up an assists against Concordia University-Wisconsin, Oct. 30, 2021...Goalie Evan Bisek recorded an assist against Marian University, Nov. 2, 2019...Two different Stout goalies earned assists during the 2015-16 season. Spencer Viele was awarded an assist Nov. 6 against Bethel University, then added a second assist Jan. 29 at UW-Superior and Chase Hollander earned an assist Nov. 21, 2015, against Concordia. The three helpers mark the first time two UW-Stout goalies have gotten an assist in the same year since the team returned to varsity status 20 years ago...When Spencer Viele was awarded an assist against Bethel University, Nov. 6, 2015, he was not the first Stout goalie, and won't be the last, to get an assist. Since the Blue Devil hockey program returned to varsity play during the 1996-97 season, seven goalies have earned at least one assist. Chase Hollander was awarded an assist for his pass as Danny Ray scored against UW-Superior, Jan. 17, 2015. Corey Koop did it during the 2013-14 season, Jeff Stone during the 2008-09 season, and Jake Schuman during the 2004-05 season each recorded an assist. Jeff Dotson did it in 2000-01 as a freshman, then did it again as a senior in 2003-04. Kelly Elde did it twice during the 1996-97 season.

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: The Blue Devils were last mentioned in the USCHO.com poll Nov. 19, 2018 and received a single vote in the Dec. 3 rankings before dropping out...the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned was with one vote in the Oct. 31, 2016 poll...The last time Stout was mentioned was Jan. 18, 2016...The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com Division III poll, Jan. 18, 2016, after nearly a four year hiatus, receiving five votes. A tie and two straight losses the following week dropped the Blue Devils out of the poll. Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. HOME ICE: The Dunn County Board in 2015 approved renaming the Dunn County Ice Arena the Fanetti Community Center in recognition of Marilyn Fanetti's contribution to fundraising efforts undertaken by the Menomonie Youth Hockey Association to remodel and add to the arena at the Dunn County Recreation Park. Fanetti donated $370,000 to the project and asked that the hockey arena and new community room be named for her family.

UW-STEVENS POINT COACH TYLER KRUEGER
- Tyler Krueger is in his fifth year as the head coach of the UWSP men's hockey program in 2021-22. With Krueger at the helm, the Pointers have won the WIAC regular season title three times. He holds a career record of 75-17-9, including a 29-5-6 record in WIAC games.
- In the 2020-21 season, Krueger guided his Pointers to the seventh-straight WIAC Championship game. His team was led by WIAC Player of the Year Zach Zech, one of four All-WIAC picks in 2021.
- In 2018-19, he guided the Pointers to the first unbeaten season in Division III history and the sixth national championship in program history. Krueger was honored with the Edward Jeremiah Award as National Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association and the USCHO.com National Coach of the Year.
- His 2018-19 Pointers set a program record with a 31-game unbeaten streak, had the highest winning percentage (.968) and allowed the fewest goals (46). He guided sophomore goaltender Connor Ryckman to the WIAC Player of the Year honor, one of two AHCA/CCM All-Americans (Tanner Karty). His Pointers went 8-0-0 in WIAC play and won the WIAC Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons.
- He was hired as permanent head coach on May 31, 2018. He served as interim head coach for the 2017-18 season and led the Pointers to the Frozen Four. UWSP won the regular season WIAC title with an undefeated 6-0-2 record and he led the Pointers to an NCAA Tournament road win at Adrian in the second round to advance to Lake Placid.
UW-SUPERIOR COACH RICH MCKENNA
- The 2021-22 season is the sixth season for Richard McKenna as head coach of the UW-Superior men's hockey program. McKenna was named to the position May 11, 2016, becoming just the sixth head coach to lead the Yellowjackets since the program was reinstated in 1965.
- In McKenna's first five seasons at UWS, he has had 10 players earn All-WIAC honors and helped six sign professional contracts. He has also coached several current NHL players and draft picks from his time in the USHL and NCAA Division I.
- McKenna led the Yellowjackets to he 2021 WIAC championship with 7-3 overall record and 5-3 mark in the league. Superior won the title -- its first since taking the 2011 crown -- with a 3-2 from-from-behind victory at UW-Stevens Point on March 12.
- McKenna came to the Yellowjackets following a season as the head coach and general manager of the New Jersey Titans of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). He led the Titans to a record of 34-22-4 and a second-place finish in the NAHL's East Division in 2015-16.
- McKenna began his coaching career as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Castleton State in Vermont in 2008-09 where he helped the Spartans to a 15-win season and a berth in the ECAC East playoffs. From there, McKenna spent two seasons (2009-11) as an assistant coach at Division III Wesleyan (Middletown, Conn.) before moving to the Division I ranks at UConn. While there, McKenna helped guide the Huskies to the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals in 2011-12 and then the semifinals in 2012-13.
- He moved into the junior game as the assistant coach and assistant general manager of the Muskegon (Mich.) Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL). There, McKenna worked under head coach and former NHL player Todd Krygier for two seasons, helping the Lumberjacks reach the Clark Cup finals in 2014-15 where they ultimately lost to the Sioux Falls Stampede.
- McKenna played his college hockey at Castleton State and graduated from there in 2007.
