Box Score MENOMONIE (January 20, 2021) - The Blue Devils used two shorthanded goals to uplift Stout to their 8th point in the WIAC standings. UW-Stout (6-11-0, 4-4-0 WIAC) scored five goals in the contest downing the Lumberjacks.
In the first period, it was Northland University (3-10-3, 0-7-1 WIAC) scoring the first goal of the game. The goal was scored by Ty Brown and assisted by Eddie Gallagher and Connor Evans to give the Lumberjacks the 1-0 advantage.
The first penalty of the game was assessed to Stout on a tripping minor penalty. The Lumberjacks went on a power play, but the Blue Devils capitalized on a two on one rush when
Alec Skar deked the Northland goalie to tie the game up. The shorthanded goal was assisted by
Alex Nagel.
With just over 30 seconds left in the period, Northland committed their first penalty and the Blue Devils went on a power play.
In the second period, the Blue Devils skated one man up, but Northland killed off the penalty.
At 2:52 of the period, Northland went on a power play. But Stout scored their second shorthanded goal of the night when
Peter Verstegen beat the Lumberjacks goalie to give the Blue Devils their first lead of the game.
At 4:48 of the second period, both teams took a penalty and skated four on four. Their were scoring chances for both teams, but each team came up empty and the score remained 2-1. Stout went on two power plays in the next ten minutes, but Northland killed off both penalties.
But with only 18 seconds left in the period, the Blue Devils Joey Pentronack scored to make the game 3-1. The goal was assisted by
Dylan Rallis.
In the third period and only 15 seconds in, Blue Devil's
Tomi Varjonen scored his first career goal as he took a shot from the point and found the back of the net. The goal was assisted by
Logan Nelson and Stout led 4-1.
With only 3:35 left in the game, Northland didn't back down as Brendan Charlton cut the lead to 4-2. The assist came from Eric Honald.
Just under 1:30 after the Northland second goal, the Lumberjack's goalie came out and Northland skated up one man. Lumberjack's Brendan Charlton scored his second goal of the night to make the game 4-3.
But with 29 seconds left in the game, Blue Devil's
Dylan Rallis took the puck all the way down the ice and scored on an empty net to seal the game 5-3.
Stout's
Zack Cloutier got the win in net while making 26 saves. Northland's Viktor Wennberg made 27 saves in the game.
Up next for the Blue Devils is another matchup with the Lumberjacks as they head to Northland University on Saturday, January 22 with puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
