THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (12-5, 3-3 WIAC) returns to Johnson Fieldhouse with a two-game winning streak after beating UW-Eau Claire last week and UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday. But the Blue Devils will have their hands full with second-ranked and once-beaten UW-Platteville (16-1, 5-1 WIAC) today. While the Blue Devils were earning an 87-74 win at Stevens Point Wednesday, Platteville suffered their first loss of the season, an 83-67 loss to UW-Oshkosh on the Pioneers' own floor. The Pioneers won 93-86 when the teams met in Platteville, Jan. 8. Saturday's game begins the second round of tournament play. Saturday is also the final event of a week-long UW-Stout Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week where Stout faculty and staff can attend a Blue Devil event at no charge.
The Blue Devils (12-5, 3-3 WIAC) return to action by traveling to UW-Stevens Point (3-8, 0-4 WIAC), Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m., then begin the second round of conference games when they host second-ranked and once-beaten UW-Platteville (16-1, 5-1 WIAC) Saturday, Jan. 22 at 3 p.m. The Platteville game is part of UW-Stout Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week where Stout faculty and staff can attend a Blue Devil event at no charge.

A LOOK AT THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS
- Stout bounced back after a three-game losing streak with a huge conference win vs rival UW-Eau Claire, and carried that energy into a 13-point win at UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday. The Blue Devils continue to showcase high scoring and assist numbers. The Blue Devils are averaging 90.1 points and 18.6 assists per game. Both of these numbers are the best in the WIAC. These stats also earn a top spot on the national scale, Stout is seventh in scoring per game and 14th in assists per game.
- This high scoring offense is highlighted by four Blue Devils who are scoring double digits on the season, with two more not far behind the 10-point mark. Lovell Williams (19.4 ppg), Armani Tinsley (15.6), Jon Ciriacks (11.9), and Brody Fox (10.2) with Luke Geieger (9.9) and Drew Scott (7.9) not far behind. Scott has been one of the most efficient scorers in the WIAC, making 71 percent of his shots (57 for 81). Fox also cracks the top 5 with 63 percent field goal efficiency (74 for 117).
- Lovell Williams has scored in double digits in 15 of 16 games, with his only game under double-digits was against Northland earlier in the season. Williams still scored six points in only five minutes during this outing. Williams cracked his career-high scoring with 31 points against Buena Vista University. Williams was on a five-game streak where he was scoring over 20 points a game, but the streak came to an end as he was one point shy against UW-Eau Claire, finishing with 19 points. Williams did record 10 assists against the Blugolds, his third double-digit assist game of the season. Williams is averaging 5.9 assists per game, the best in the WIAC.
- Armani Tinsley has continued to find the basket this season, breaking double-digits in the past nine games. Tinsley has averaged 24.3 points in the past three games, recording a career-high 31 points in the win against Eau Claire. Tinsley also has recorded 49 assists on the season, placing him eigthth in the WIAC with 2.8 assists per game.
- The 2021-22 Blue Devils broke Stout's single game scoring record which had been held since 1971 (the 1986 team tied the record). Stout defeated the visiting Greenville Panthers, a team known for their high-scoring games, 125-119. Brody Fox connected on two late game free throws to put this Blue Devil team into the record books. The next time out, the Blue Devils scored 108 points in a win over Finlandia.
- The Blue Devils experienced their first overtime game of the season in their first meeting against UW-Eau Claire. The last time Stout had an overtime game was in the 2018-19 season where Stout lost to McMurry University, 79-75. But this past matchup needed two overtimes to decide a winner. The last time the Blue Devils went into double overtime was in the 1999-2000 season where they lost to Stevens Point, 89-84.

CLIMBING THE LADDER
- Both Jon Ciriacks and Luke Geiger are making their way up the UW-Stout all-time scoring list. Ciriacks is currently 26th on the list, with 984 points, while Geiger is 30th with 934 career points. Ciriacks is currently 11th on the 3-point made list with 130 and Geiger is not far behind with 119 treys, ranking 12th. Ciriacks is 22nd on the all-time rebounds list with 459.
BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- The Blue Devils had a strong second half, but really came on in the final minutes to down UW-Stevens Point, 87-74, Jan. 19 in Stevens Point. The Pointers led 71-70 at 4:59 when Stout caught fire, closing the game on a 17-3 run, spreading the scoring among five players. Brody Fox dropped in four free throws and a basket for six points. Armani Tinsley added four free throws, Luke Geiger scored a bucket and a free throw and Jon Ciriacks and TYreese Alexander each had two points. Stout had five players in double figures, led by Fox's 19 points. Ciriacks and Geiger each scored 15 points, Tinsley added 14 and Jackson Noll finished with 11 points. Drew Scott scored nine points and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds. Ciriacks and Geiger both collected double-doubles, each pulling down 10 rebounds. Stout out-rebounded the Pointers 48-25.
- The Blue Devils needed double overtime, but defeated UW-Eau Claire, 95-90, Jan. 12. The Blue Devils' game with UW-Oshkosh, Jan. 15, was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
- UW-Stout outscored UW-Eau Claire 9-4 in the second overtime to take a 95-90 win over the Blugolds Jan. 12 on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. With the score tied at 86 after the first overtime, Stout Armani Tinsley stole the ball and layed the ball in to give Stout an 88-86 lead. Noah Blair hit a 3-pointer for Eau Claire to lift the Blugolds to an 89-88 lead. Lovell Williams put Stout ahead for good with a 3-pointer. The Blue Devils were playing with a nine-man roster due to health and safety protocols. Williams racked up a triple double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT:
- Stevens Point (3-8, 0-4 WIAC) has struggled all around placing in the bottom half of nearly all of the WIAC statistics. The Pointers went on a three-game winning streak back in November, but have since lost their last six games. The Pointers are led by senior guard Garrett Nelson, who carries the bulk of Stevens Point's scoring with 16.4 points per game. Nelson is one of only three Pointers who have seen action in all 11 games. The others is Petter Timmerman, who leads the Pointers with 4.5 rebounds per game and Darrius Bolden. The Pointers have been thankful for Jake Buchanan lately, as he has scored 22 points in only two appearances. Buchanan scored 12 points against UW-La Crosse and 10 points at Platteville.
- As a team, the Pointers record the lowest field goal percentage as well as the lowest field goal defense in the WIAC. The Pointers are scoring 62.7 per game.

THE POINTERS LAST TIME OUT:
- Stevens Point held a lead with 8:18 left in regulation, but No. 2 UW-Platteville pulled away late in an 89-78 final. Garrett Nelson led a quartet of double-figure scorers with 19 points. WHEN STEVENS POINT AND STOUT LAST MET:
- Stevens Point and Stout did not meet during the 2020-21 season due to rescheduling in the WIAC because of the pandemic
- This one was really a tale of two halves as UW-Stout outplayed UW-Stevens Point in the first half, but the Pointers overcame a 19 point deficit and defeated the Blue Devils, 70-67, Feb. 19, 2020, on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse. Jon Ciriacks led Stout with 17 points, followed by Luke Geiger with 15 and Cliff McCray with 13. Geiger racked up a double-double with 10 rebounds. Only five Pointers scored with Brandon Spray leading the way with a game-high 19 points. Ethan Bublitz finished with 16, Blake Erhke with 14 and Matt Koerner with 13. SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE
- Platteville (16-1, 5-1 WIAC) ranked second in the most recent d3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, and their numbers this season show just why. Platteville is headed by six big scorers, Quentin Shields (14.7), Kyle Tuma (14.6), Logan Pearson (12.1), Blake McCann (10.6), Justin Stovall (9.5), and Ben Probst (7.1). Platteville and Stout both have very similar scoring distributions, so this upcoming game on Saturday will be a big one for both teams. Tuma also leads the team in rebounds with 9.0 per game, second in the WIAC, while Shields leads with assists (3.5 per game), seventh in the WIAC.
- Despite the offensive scoring that Platteville showcases, their defense is what wins them games. This defense has only allowed 62.3 points per game, ranking them 14th in the nation. They are also ranked 20th in the nation, with a plus-15.5 point scoring margin throughout their games.

THE PIONEERS LAST TIME OUT:
- In the first battle of two Top 5 teams in Williams Fieldhouse this century, No. 5 UW-Oshkosh defeated No. 2 UW-Platteville 83-67 Jan. 19 in Platteville night. The loss on Bo Ryan Court snaps the Pioneers' (16-1, 5-1 WIAC) perfect record thus far this season, a best for the program since the undefeated 1997-98 season. Platteville took an early 8-2 lead five minutes into the game, but Hunter Plamann's made three-pointer knotted the game 25-25 with 5:04 left in the half. UW-Oshkosh went on to nail four more threes before halftime and the Pioneers trailed 41-32 going into the second period. The Titans took their lead into double digits, but seven straight points by Kyle Tuma followed by two more from Logan Pearson cut UW-Platteville's deficit to 58-54 and 7:08 remaining in the game. With five Pioneers in foul trouble late in the game, a plague of 12 fouls followed to bring their second half total to 20 while the Titans went on to make 17-of-26 (65.4 percent) of their free throws in the second half. Two Pioneers finished with double-doubles. Tuma with 18 and 10 rebounds in addition to three blocks and Justin Stovall with 12 points and 10 rebounds plus a team-high four blocks. - Platteville heated up late in the second half with a 15-3 run to defeat UW-Stevens Point 89-78 Jan. 15. The win on Bo Ryan Court leaves the Pioneers 16-0 on the season and 5-0 in the WIAC while UW-Stevens Point falls to 3-8 overall and 0-4 in the league. Both teams shot over 50 percent with UW-Platteville wrapping up 57.7 percent (30-of-52) from the field while the Pointers finished shooting 52.8 percent (28-of-53). The Pioneers drained 45 percent (9-of-20) of shots from behind the three-point arc and were 20-of-23 (87 percent) from the foul line. WHEN PLATTEVILLE AND STOUT LAST MET:
- UW-Stout rallied from a 12-point deficit with about five minutes left to play to pull to within three points in the final 93 seconds, but could not find the key to get past second ranked UW-Platteville and the Pioneers defeated the Blue Devils, 93-86, Jan. 8 on Bo Ryan Court. The Pioneers took an 82-70 lead on Ben Probst's 3-point shot. The team's traded baskets and Stout's Lovell Williams pulled the Blue Devils to within eight points, 83-75, with a 3-pointer at 3:46. BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played what is believed to be their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH JIM LAKE
- Jim Lake (27-48) is in his fourth season in 2021-22 as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Lake came to Stout after 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State. The Bulldogs won the 2017-18 NCAA Division II national title.
- Lake served at Ferris State University for a total of 10 years, the last five years beginning with the 2013-14 season as the program's top assistant men's basketball coach. Lake had served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs in two different stints over the previous decade, working as a part-time assistant coach from 2011-13 before moving up to the full-time lead position, and as a volunteer assistant coach from 2003-06.
- During five seasons as the Bulldogs' top assistant coach, Lake helped Ferris State to four consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament championships and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, culminating in a 38-1 overall record and the 2018 NCAA Division II national title with a 71-69 win over Northern State University in March.
UW-STEVENS POINT'S BOB SEMLING
- Bob Semling enters his 17th season at UW-Stevens Point in 2021-22 and has won four national championships with the Pointers. In 16 seasons at UW-Stevens Point, Semling has led the Pointers to two NCAA Division III national championships (2010, 2015), in addition to being an assistant on the back-to-back national championship teams of 2004 and 2005. Through his 16 seasons as head coach, Semling has compiled an overall record of 318-107, which includes a 169-56 mark in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. His .748 career winning percentage entering this season was the fifth-highest among active Division III coaches and ranks 45th all-time among all divisions for coaches with at least 10 seasons as a head coach. On January 11, 2014, Semling became the all-time winningest coach in UW-Stevens Point program history by recording his 201st career victory at UW-Superior. He won his 300th game at UWSP on Feb. 19, 2019, with an 89-61 victory over UW-Eau Claire in the first round of the 2019 WIAC Tournament. In 2015, Semling was named the National Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), D3hoops.com and Schelde Sports/DIII News. He also earned NABC and D3hoops.com Coach of the Year honors in 2010. Semling is a five-time WIAC Coach of the Year and has received the award in each of the last three seasons.
UW-PLATTEVILLE'S JEFF GARD
- Jeff Gard received national accolades in 2019-20 after leading the Pioneers to a 23-5 record, a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, and a third straight trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Gard, who completed his 11th season as the head coach, earned WIAC Coach of the Year, the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District Coach of the Year, the D3Hoops.com Central Region Coach of the Year, and the national Jack Bennett Man of the Year honor. The 2019-20 Pioneers finished 12-2 in the WIAC, claiming their second title in three years. They were also regular-season champions in 2017-18 and were the 2018-19 WIAC post-season champions. This year's Pioneers finished the season 12th in the nation. Gard has compiled a 180-116 record in his 11 years, and his 180 wins rank 20th all-time in WIAC history.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. The Blue Devils were picked to finish seventh in a preseason poll conducted by league coaches and sports information directors. UW-Platteville was projected to win the conference, with UW-Oshkosh second, UW-La Crosse third, UW-Whitewater fourth, UW-River Falls fifth, UW-Eau Claire sixth and UW-Stevens Point eighth.
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
