THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (5-10-0, 3-4-0 WIAC) will play in the Fanetti Community Center for the first time in more than a month when the Blue Devils host Saint Mary's University, (4-8-1, 5-3-0 MIAC) Friday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. and St. Olaf College (5-7-3, 3-3-1 MIAC), Saturday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. 

TONIGHT'S GAME: UW-Stout (5-10-0, 3-4-0 WIAC) is coming off their biggest offensive output of the season with a 6-3 win over Saint Mary's University here last night with six different players scoring goals. The Blue Devils tonight host St. Olaf College (5-7-3, 3-3-1 MIAC). The Oles are coming off a 4-2 win last night at UW-River Falls.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS:

  • The Blue Devils will be looking to rebound from Tuesday's conference loss to UW-River Falls. 
  • Last week's WIAC hockey athlete of the week Raphael Gosselin leads the Blue Devils in scoring and the team captain has punched in five goals and six assists, with two goals coming on the power play. Dylan Rallis and Peyton Hart both have five goals, with Rallis handing off five assiss and Hart three assists. Caleb Serre has a team-high eight assists. In net, Tyler Masternak is posting a 4-4-0 record, with a GAA of 3.12 and a saves percentage of .908. Zack Cloutier, last night's winner, has a GAA of 3.73 and a saves percentage of .903.
  • Logan Nelson  has four goals and three assists. Riley Enderle has scored four goal and Kobe Keller has dished off five assists.
  • Cole Beckstead, Alex Nagel, and Landon Lushanko have each added two goals.
  • Gosselin leads the team in power play goals with two. Stout has gotten power play goals from newcomers Matt Flodell and John Jebamani, as well as Peter Verstegen and Logan Nelson. Rallis scored Stout's first shorthanded goal since the 2018-19 season.  Hart scored shorthanded against River Falls, Jan. 11.
  • Stout has five goalies this season and freshman Tyler Masternak has snared all four wins. The freshman is posting a GAA of 2.99 with a saves percentage of .911.  Brennan Kitchen has a GAA of 3.84 with a saves percentage of .868 and Zack Cloutier has a 4.10 GAA with a saves percentage of .895.
  • The Blue Devils finished the abbreviated 2020-21 season at 4-7 overall. The Blue Devils averaged 2.75 goals per game and gave up 3.6 goals. Stout is 6-29 (20.9 percent) on the power play and 7-27 (74.1) on the penalty kill. 
  • The Blue Devils return their top seven scorers and nine of their top 10 scorers from last season. 
  • Raphael Gosselin returns as the team's leading scorer from last season, leads the team in points, posting four goals and seven assists for 11 points.
  • Kobe Keller led Stout in goals scored with five, of which two were power play goals, and added a pair of assists. Logan Nelson, a three-time all-WIAC honorable mention pick, returns after scoring four goals and three assists. Matt Dahlseide and Peter Verstegan each scored two goals and four assists. Defenseman Joey Petronack had a goal and five assists as a freshman, earning honorable mention honors. Alex Nagel was just behind Gosselin in assists, dishing off six. Alex Stuckert had a goal and three assists, while Brandon Connett had two goals, both power play goals, and an assist during his freshman season.
  • Twenty different players scored at least one point last season.
  • The Blue Devils return two all-conference goalies in Brennan Kitchen and Zack Cloutier. Kitchen earned honorable mention honors in 2019-20 and Cloutier earned first team honors last season when he set a single season record for goals against average (GAA) with a 1.63 mark. Tyler Masternak joins the Blue Devils' goalie crew that also includes returners Brady Meyers and Marco Zink.
  • Stout returns five players who have earned All-WIAC honors at least once throughout their career. Senior forward Logan Nelson has been selected WIAC honorable mention all three years. Junior goalie Brennan Kitchen was a honorable mention pick in 2019-20. Senior forward Raphael Gosselin earned first team honors last season, as did sophomore goalie Zach Cloutier. Sophomore defenseman Joey Petronack was an honorable mention selection last spring.
  • The Blue Devils have seven seniors, eight juniors, eight sophomores and 11 freshmen on their 2021-22 roster.
 


BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT

  • Stout scored four second period goals and in their 6-3 win last night here. The Cardinals scored 1:45 into the second period to break a 1-1 tie, but the Blue Devils tied the game four minutes later to take advantage on the power play when Peyton Hart scored and Hart's goal began Stout's offensive onslaught as the Blue Devils would score the next four goals. Noah Carson scored at 12:57 with assists by Dylan Rallis and Raphael Gosselin, Mikey Butcher scored with an unassisted goal at 16:56 and Matt Dahlseide completed the second period scoring at 18:44 with assists by Hayden Clark and Caleb Serre. Gosselin gave Stout a 6-2 lead midway through the third period, taking assists by Logan Nelson and Rallis. The Cardinals Travor Paradise got a consolation goal at 16:08. The teams matched goals in the first period. The Cardinals' drew first blood and scored quickly when Nick Kiemel scored only 1-minute, 56-seconds into the game. Stout tied the game when Nick Bowlin scored his first collegiate goal at 16:15 of the first, with assists from Brandon Connett and Noe Perez.
  • UW-River Falls scored the first five goals of the game and went on to a 7-2 WIAC win over UW-Stout at Hunt Arena in a rare Tuesday conference game Jan. 11. The Falcons scored in the first period then scored the first four goals of the second period before Stout got on the board. The Blue Devils got goals from Peyton Hart and Raphael Gosselin. Hart's goal with 16 seconds remaining in the second period ended the Falcons' run. Gosselin scored the final goal of the game at the 14:08 mark of the third period. Gosselin was assisted by Tomi Varjonen. Both teams scored shorthanded goals, with Hart landing Stout's shorty and Passarelli for the Falcons. Ganske scored a power play goal for the Falcons in the third period. The Blue Devils were 0-3 on the power play, while the Falcons were 1-1. Tyler Masternak was saddled with the loss, giving up the first four goals before giving way to Brennan Kitchen, who surrendered the final three goals. Masternak had 13 saves and Kitchen 10. SCOUTING SAINT MARY'S UNIVERSITY

  • Saint Mary's is led in points by Matt Hutton, who has two goals and six assists for eight points. Bud Winter has a team-high four goals, of which two are power play goals. Winter has dished off three assists. Led by Winter, three other players have tallied seven points - Laudon Poelinger (3-4-7), Trevor Schroder (2-5-7) and Brady Lindauer (2-5-7). Ryan Stoynich and Kasyn Kruse each have three goals and Andrew Froese has two goals. The Cardinals are averaging 2.2 goals and giving up 3.7 goals. Matt Sankner and AJ Ruskowski have been staring time in net. Sankner is 3-4-1 with a GAA of 2.95 and a saves percentage of .910. Ruskowski is 1-4-0 overall, with a GAA of 4.30 and saves percentage of .869.

THE CARDINALS LAST TIME OUT
  • The Cardinals have been idle since Dec. 7 when they lost 6-0 to MSOE in Milwaukee. Saint Mary's picked up two conference forfeit wins when St. Scholastica was forced to forfeit a weekend series, Jan. 7-8. | Story
  • After a period and a half of scoreless hockey between Saint Mary's University and Milwaukee School of Engineering, goals came fast and furious over the final 10 minutes of the second period Tuesday evening. Which was good news for the host Raiders — and not-so-good news for the Cardinals. MSOE erupted for four second-period goals — including two, 10 seconds apart late in the frame — as the Raiders cruised to a 6-0 non-conference victory over the Cardinals at Kern Center Dec. 7. | Game Story and Stats


WHEN STOUT AND SAINT MARY'S LAST MET

  • The teams met in an exhibition season to kick off the 2021-22 season with Saint Mary's winning the contest, 3-2, in overtime at Saint Mary's.
  • UW-Stout scored the first goal of the game, but St. Mary's University scored the next five goals to take a 5-1 win over the Blue Devils Jan. 17, 2020, at St. Mary's Arena. Stout freshman Peter Verstegen scored his second goal of the season at 9:26 of the first period, with an assist by Adam Kresl, for what would prove to be Stout's only goal of the game. The Blue Devils (kept the Cardinals off the board until the second period when Alex Rickoff and Ryan Stoynich scored in the second. The Cardinals' Ian Currie, Kyle Meeh and Alex DiBacco scored in the third period. SCOUTING ST. OLAF COLLEGE

  • Tyler Cooper leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and six assists for 16 points. Cooper has been the Oles' leader on the power play, punching in four power play goals. Sean Walsh has six goals and four assists. Ethan Hersant and Ashton Altmann have four goals and five assists. The Oles are averaging 2.9 goals per game and giving up 3.1 goals. Five goalies have seen the ice this season for the Oles, with Cooper Lukenda and Thomas Lalonde seeing the most time. Lukenda is 1-3-3 overall, with a GAA of 3.39 and a save percentage of .894. Lalonde has a record of 2-1-0 with a GAA of 2.52 and save percentage of .917. Lukas Haugen is 2-2-0 (2.33 GAA, .927 saves percentage) and Colin Cain is 0-1-0 (3.77 GAA, .872 saves percentage).

THE OLES LAST TIME OUT
  • Walsh had two goals and an assist as St. Olaf College picked up its first road victory of the season with a 4-2 win over UW-River Falls Friday at Hunt Arena. Walsh tallied the game-tying and go-ahead goals on the power play early in the second and third periods for St. Olaf, which picked up its first win over River Falls since Nov. 7, 2008. Walsh's three-point night was the first of his collegiate career, as was his two-goal performance. First years Ben Luscko and Parker Casey assisted on both of Walsh's goals, while junior Ashton Altmann and first year Tyler Cooper also lit the lamp for the Oles.
  • St. Olaf had their weekend series with Gustavus Adolphus College, Jan. 7-8, postponed.
  • St. Olaf's last game was Dec. 31 when the Oles tied with Hamline, 4-4.  St. Olaf held a 4-2 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the third period before Hamline University scored two late goals as the teams played to a 4-4 tie in a non-conference contest.  | Game Story and Stats


WHEN STOUT AND ST. OLAF LAST MET

  • UW-Stout simply ran out of time as the Blue Devils lost a 3-2 decision to St. Olaf College Jan. 18, 2020. The Blue Devils put together another late rally, scoring with five seconds left in the game after pulling their goalie. But there simply was not enough time as the Oles batted the puck away on the ensuing faceoff and time ran out. The Oles started off the scoring quickly by putting two scores up on the board in the first period, both within the first two-plus minutes of the game, getting goals by Kyle Rimbach at 1:09 of the first and by Mitch Dolter at 2:07.  Stout cut the lead in half in the second period when Evan Butcher, with assists by Peter Verstegen and Alex Bowe, scored at 10:23 of the second. For Butcher, it was his second goal of the season.  The Oles neutralized that goal six minutes later, taking advantage on the power play.on a goal by Josh Radtke.  The third period was quiet from a scoring point of view until Stout pulled goalie Evan Bisek. The Blue Devils' defenseman Connor Chambers scored his first goal of the season in a scrum with the extra attacker on the ice with five seconds remaining. Lucas Carroll and Raphael Gosselin were awarded assists on the goal. After the officials were able to sort out a number of penalties, the Oles were able to push the puck out of reach of the Blue Devils and iced their first home win of the season.   • 2021-22: Senior captain Raphael Gosselin was selected as the WIAC/Kwik Trip Hockey Athlete of the Week and the UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after scoring a goal and assisting on the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime win over Bethel University, Jan. 7...Goalie Tyler Masternak was selected as the UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after picking up wins over Northland College and UW-Eau Claire in the conference openers.
  • 2020-21: Goalie Zack Cloutier was selected as the Kwik Trip/WIAC Athlete of the Week and The Heights/UW-Stout Athlete of the Week. 
  • 2019-20: Goalie Brennan Kitchen, defenseman Connor Chambers and forward Logan Nelson earned WIAC honorable mention honors. Lucas Carroll was selected to the all-sportsmanship team...Brennan Kitchen was selected as the WIAC hockey athlete of the week after stopping 55 shots in a 4-0 shutout over Northland College, Jan. 25. UW-STOUT COACH MIKE MACDONALD

  • The 2021-22 season marks Mike MacDonald's (8-17-0) second season as the Blue Devils' head coach. (began the 2021-22 season at 4-7-0)
  • Before coming to Stout, MacDonald coached four seasons at Curry College, near Boston, Mass. Prior to joining Curry, he spent a year as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. 
  • MacDonald graduated from the SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Business Administration in 2007. During his time at Geneseo, the team posted a record of 67-33-11, winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2005 and 2006. Over his collegiate career, MacDonald appeared in 109 games and is among the school's all-time leaders in goals (61) and points (120).
  • MacDonald played six seasons professionally. He began his professional career in the Central Hockey League, spending one season each with the Odessa Jackalopes and New Mexico Scorpions. The following four seasons he played primarily for the Southern Professional Hockey League's Huntsville Havoc. While there he served as the team's captain for three seasons. In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal to give Huntsville its first ever SPHL Championship. Over his career, MacDonald appeared in 338 professional games with 213 points on 84 goals and 129 assists.
  • MacDonald is a native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

SAINT MARY'S COACH RYAN EGAN
  • Ryan Egan is the head men's hockey coach at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, a position he has held since the start of the 2019-2020 academic school year. Egan guided the Cardinals to nine wins in his first year at the helm in 2019-20 — including a pair of victories over nationally ranked teams en route to claiming the tournament title at the Pathfinder/Oswego State Holiday Classic in Oswego, N.Y. Saint Mary's beat No. 10 Oswego State 1-0 in their first game, then clinched the crown with a 4-2 win over No. 14 Williams.
  • During his second season, Egan and the Cardinals had to play through the COVID-19 pandemic, being limited to an 11-game schedule vs. only MIAC schools. Egan is no stranger to Saint Mary's, having served as the Cardinal men's hockey team's assistant coach from 2009 to 2014.
  • After leaving Saint Mary's, Egan spent two years as head coach and general manager of the La Crosse Freeze in the NA3HL, and then was named the head coach/general manager for the Coulee Region Chill in the NAHL. During this first season in the NAHL (2016-17), the Chill set a franchise record for NCAA Division college commitments. He spent last season as head coach and general manager of the College Station Spirit (recently renamed the Texas Roadrunners) of the NA3HL. Egan began his coaching career with the Omaha Energy AAA program, where he was program director and head coach. Egan then moved on to guide the San Antonio Diablos (WSHL).

ST. OLAF COACH SHANE WAGNER
  • Eddie Effinger is in his second season as the head men's hockey coach at St. Olaf in 2021-22 after being named to the position on April 14, 2020.
  • In his first season on the Hill, St. Olaf was limited to two games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Effinger led the Oles to a 3-2 victory over Saint Mary's in his first game behind the bench on March 16, 2021 before the team fell to Hamline by the same score four days later. Effinger came to St. Olaf after spending the past season as the director of hockey operations at NCAA Division I Boston University. A former NCAA Division III student-athlete at Amherst College, Effinger also spent six seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater prior to BU.
  • At BU, Effinger managed all operational aspects of the men's hockey program, including travel logistics, video breakdowns, and athletic development. He also assisted head coach Albie O'Connell with fundraising development, alumni relations, recruiting coordination with players across the world, and oversaw academic support, leadership programming, and community outreach. The Terriers finished the season 13-13-9 overall and 10-9-5 in the highly-competitive Hockey East and earned the No. 6 seed in the Hockey East Tournament before it was canceled. Prior to BU, Effinger spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Amherst under long-time head coach Jack Arena from 2013-14 through 2018-19. During his six seasons on staff, the Mammoths went 89-48-21 (.630) overall and 60-31-17 (.634) in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).
  


THE CONFERENCE:

  • UW-Stout is a member of the six-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls. Northland College joined the league last season. UW-Eau Claire was picked to win the league title, according to a preseason poll conducted by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Stevens Point was chosen second, UW-River Falls third, UW-Superior fourth, UW-Stout fifth and Northland sixth.

LENDING AN ASSIST: in the 2021-22 season, goalie Zack Cloutier dished an assist Oct. 30, 2021 against Concordia-Wis and Tyler Masternak recorded his first collegiate assist against Bethel University, Jan. 7, 2022...Goalie Zack Cloutier chalked up an assists against Concordia University-Wisconsin, Oct. 30, 2021...Goalie Evan Bisek recorded an assist against Marian University, Nov. 2, 2019...Two different Stout goalies earned assists during the 2015-16 season. Spencer Viele was awarded an assist Nov. 6 against Bethel University, then added a second assist Jan. 29 at UW-Superior and Chase Hollander earned an assist Nov. 21, 2015, against Concordia. The three helpers mark the first time two UW-Stout goalies have gotten an assist in the same year since the team returned to varsity status 20 years ago...When Spencer Viele was awarded an assist against Bethel University, Nov. 6, 2015, he was not the first Stout goalie, and won't be the last, to get an assist. Since the Blue Devil hockey program returned to varsity play during the 1996-97 season, seven goalies have earned at least one assist. Chase Hollander was awarded an assist for his pass as Danny Ray scored against UW-Superior, Jan. 17, 2015. Corey Koop did it during the 2013-14 season, Jeff Stone during the 2008-09 season, and Jake Schuman during the 2004-05 season each recorded an assist. Jeff Dotson did it in 2000-01 as a freshman, then did it again as a senior in 2003-04. Kelly Elde did it twice during the 1996-97 season.

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com poll Nov. 19, 2018 and received a single vote in the Dec. 3 rankings before dropping out...the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned was with one vote in the Oct. 31, 2016 poll...The last time Stout was mentioned was Jan. 18, 2016...The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com Division III poll, Jan. 18, 2016, after nearly a four year hiatus, receiving five votes. A tie and two straight losses the following week dropped the Blue Devils out of the poll. Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but dropped out. HOME ICE: The Dunn County Board in 2015 approved renaming the Dunn County Ice Arena the Fanetti Community Center in recognition of Marilyn Fanetti's contribution to fundraising efforts undertaken by the Menomonie Youth Hockey Association to remodel and add to the arena at the Dunn County Recreation Park. Fanetti donated $370,000 to the project and asked that the hockey arena and new community room be named for her family.

UP NEXT:  The Blue Devils return to conference play with a home and away series against Northland College. The Blue Devils will host the Lumberjacks, Thursday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. and will travel to Ashland, Saturday, Jan. 22 for a 7 p.m. drop of the puck.
