A LOOK AT THE 2021 BLUE DEVILS: The Blue Devils are off to one of the best starts in school history, posting five shutouts among their first eight games. Stout is off to their best start after eight games since the 2011 season which also started 6-1-1. The Blue Devils have already won more games than they did during the 2019 season. The 2004 team got off to a 11-0-1 start, including six shutouts over the first seven games. Stout has outscored their opponents, 15-4 after eight games, averaging 1.9 goals per contest. The Blue Devils tend to be a second half scoring team, scoring 11 of their goals in the second half. Stout is holding a whopping 103-41 lead in overall shots and has put 61 shots on frame, compared to 24 for their opponents. Freshman and first year performers have been key to Stout's success. Six freshmen are among Stout's leading goal scorers. Freshman Liv Winkler leads the team in scoring with four goals and one assist. Senior Marissa Steele matches Winkler in points, scoring two goals and a team-best five assists. Four freshmen are next in scoring, with Carly Kauffman (2-3-7), Lexi Boyd (3-0-6), Remy Soulak (2-1-5) and defender Hailey Kane (1-1-3). Senior Caylee Boone has three assists. THE BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: Stout defeated UW-Superior, 2-0, Sept. 15, lost their first game of the season, a 1-0 loss to Macalester, Sept. 18 and came back for a 4-2 win over Minn-Morris, Sept. 19
All of the scoring in this contest came in less than an eight minute span early in the second half as UW-Stout fell in a non-conference contest, 2-1, at Viterbo University Saturday. After a scoreless first half, the V-Hawks' (6-2-0) Abigail Mumm scored in the 50th minute, assisted by Jenna Bennett. The Blue Devils evened the score three minutes later when Marissa Steele, with an assist from Remy Soulak, scored in the 53rd minute. It was Steele's third goal of the season and Soulak's second assist of the season. But the Blue Devil defense, which had allowed two goals only once before this season, allowed Viterbo the eventual game-winning goal by Mumm in the 58th minute. Stout was able to get only two more shots off the rest of the way and none on goal. Stout's Haley Vokaty made two saves, while the V-Hawks' Bergen Beversdorf made three saves. Viterbo held a 12-9 overall shot advantage. Viterbo put five shots on save to Stout's four. The V-Hawks held a distinct lead in corner kicks, an 8-2 advantage. | Viterbo Game Story and Stats

THE V-HAWKS LAST TIME OUT: Viterbo scored a goal in each half to take a 2-0 win over Bethany Lutheran College, Sept. 13. Abigail Mumm scored in the 20th minute and Lauren Wedig scored in the 78th minutes. Bergen Beversdorf made two saves to record the shuout. | Box Score

THE LAST TIME VITERBO AND STOUT MET: Viterbo University scored three goals within 20 minutes of game time on their way to a 3-1 win over UW-Stout Sept. 18, 2018, at Nelson Field. The Blue Devils had trouble generating offense against the V-Hawks, who held a 23-6 advantage in shots and put 13 shots on net. Viterbo's Rebecca Joas scored just before intermission, getting a goal in the 44th minute. After the break, Nicole D'Ambrose scored in the 51st minute and Sydney King scored in the 64th minute to round out the visitor's scoring. The Blue Devils did break up the shut out when Lindsay Penkala took a pass from Kali Brahs and scored with five seconds left on the clock. Melissa Ferrise made her first start in the goal and turned away 10 shots. | Game Story and Stats

THE SERIES: The Blue Devils hold an 8-5-0 lead in the series. | History

A LOOK AT ST. MARY'S UNIVERSITY:  St. Mary's allowed their first goal of the season in a 2-1 win over St. Catherine's yesterday and have outscored their opponents, 26-1. St. Mary's was undefeated heading into last Saturday's game with St. Benedict and the teams played to a 0-0 tie. Alexis Nguyen has been flawless in the net, stopping all 15 shots on net and is posting a 5-0-1 record. Three other goalies have seen action and none have faced a shot on net. Leah Brun earned a start and a win against Ripon College. Nine different Cardinals have scored at least one goal, with Haddy Falkman leads the way with six goals and two assists. Brooklyn McKinney has four goals, Jordyn Matthews has five goals and three assists, Kassie Arriaga has three goals. Genesis Capacio has dished off a team-high four assists.  |  2021 Season Statistics

THE CARDINALS LAST TIME OUT: The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team entered Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. A 10-0 loss to the Wildcats in their last meeting will do that to a team. It's been 149 days since that forgettable confrontation — and when Saint Mary's took the field Saturday afternoon to square off against the Wildcats once again, the Cardinals were determined to write a more memorable ending. Which is exactly what they did. In a battle of unbeatens, it would be the Cardinals who kept their slate clean — thanks in large part to the lethal one-two combination of Jordyn Matthews and Alexis Nguyen. Matthews scored a pair of goals — including the game-winner with less than 12 minutes  remaining in regulation — and Nguyen stopped a career-high 10 shots, as the Cardinals avenged that nightmarish 10-0 loss to SCU in late April with a thrilling, 2-1 victory. Matthews opened the scoring for the Cardinals midway through the first half, scoring her fourth goal of the season. Saint Mary's would maintain that 1-0 advantage into the halftime intermission and through the first 27 minutes of the second half, before the Wildcats would net the equalizer on a goal by Lauren Witte. Witte's goal not only knotted the game at 1-1, but also marked the first time this season the Cardinals had surrendered a goal — a span of 722:31 scoreless minutes. That, however, would be the only goal the Wildcats would get past Nguyen — who finished with a career-high 10 saves. Matthews and the Cardinal offense, meanwhile, weren't about to be satisfied with a tie, and the junior striker answered SCU's goal with her second of the day with less than 12 minutes remaining in regulation to give Saint Mary's the victory — and snap a nine-game losing streak against the Wildcats. St. Catherine held a 19-6 advantage in shots, and an 11-2 edge in shots on goal — but the Cardinals made both of their shots on goal count in pushing their conference record to 2-0-1, while improving to 7-0-1 overall

The Cardinals were scheduled to host UW-Platteville, Monday, Sept. 20, but that game was postponed due to weather. St. Mary's is scheduled to travel to St. Catherine's University for a conference contest Saturday, Sept. 25. Saint Mary's University entered Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Saint Benedict sporting a season-opening six-game winning streak — and the Cardinals had yet to allow a single goal. After 110 minutes against the Bennies, the Cardinals have still not allowed a goal — but that season-opening winning streak has been relabeled an unbeaten streak, as SMU and CSB battled to a 0-0, double-overtime tie at Ochrymowycz Field. Saint Benedict had the upper hand offensively in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Cardinals 5-4, but it was SMU that owned a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. It was more of the same in the second half, as the Cardinals owned a 4-2 shots advantage, with both teams owning one shot on goal. The Bennies recorded the lone shot on goal in the two overtime periods, but could not find a way to get a shot past SMU goalkeeper Alexis Nguyen. Nguyen was once again her brick-wall self, stopping all four shots she faced en route to her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. CSB starting goalkeeper Paige Kahlmeyer made three saves in the opening half, while Annie Waters finished with one save after coming on in relief after the halftime intermission.  | Game Story and Stats

THE LAST TIME ST. MARY'S AND STOUT MET:  After a scoreless first half, St. Mary's scored two goals within the first 20 minutes of the second half to take a 2-0 win over UW-Stout Sept. 25, 2019,  in Winona, Minn. Stout's Claudia Anderson recorded nine saves, while the Cardinals' Gabriella Pederson had three saves. The Cardinals' broke the deadlock just a few minutes into the second half when Cassie Arriaga scored in the 49th minute. St. Mary's made it a two goal game in the 66th minute on a goal by Jordyn Matthews.  |  Game Story and Stats
