BLUE DEVILS LAST WEEK
  • The Blue Devils split two games last week with UW-River Falls, with each team winning on their own floor, River Falls taking the win in Menomonie, 82-77, but Stout winning in River Falls, 81-72.
  • UW-Stout came back from a 21 point deficit seven minutes into the second half (66-45) to pull to within one point, 70-69, with five minutes left on Drew Scott's layup, only to fall 82-77 to UW-River Falls  in the season opener Wednesday on Dewey Mintz Court. It looked like the Falcons were going to blow the Blue Devils out of the empty gym early in the second half. The Blue Devils built up a six point lead in the first half, leading 26-20 at the 8:33 mark. But the Falcons cut the lead and then turned that into a six point, 44-38, hafltime lead. River Falls built an 11 point lead three minutes into the second half, then outscored Stout 10-2 over the next four minutes to take a 66-45 lead. The teams traded buckets and the Falcons went up 68-47 following a media timeout.  The Blue Devils went on a run, outscoring River Falls 22-2 in a six minute roll. The Blue Devils got balanced scoring in the run. Jon Ciriacks and Drew Scott each had five points. Josh Mericle and Lovell Williams each added four and Brody Fox and TYreese Alexander had two points each.  The teams went scoreless for nearly two minutes until the Falcons Noah Hanson drained a three, one of his eight on the night. Stout pulled to within one point again, 75-74, on Luke Geiger's 3-pointer with 1:39 left. Alex Ohde answered back with a three for the Falcons and Stout never got closer than three the rest of the way. Hanson led all scorers with 28 points. Ohde finished with 17 points and 15 boards. Jack Stensgard collected 13 points and Bryce Phillips had 11. The freshman Williams led Stout with 20 points, 14 in the second half. Senior Armani Tinsley finished with 15 points. The Falcons shot 12-29 from downtown, while Stout hit 10-30 from beyond the arc. The Falcons shot 31-58 from the floor (53.4 percent), while the Bule Devils shot 30-63 (47.6 percent). The Falcons had a slight 32-29 advantage in rebounds.. | Game Story and Statistics
  •  TYreese Alexander notched a double-double for UW-Stout and the Blue Devils went on to an 81-72 win at UW-River Falls Friday. Alexander scored a career-high 22 points and matched a career-best 10 rebounds in recording his third double-double at Stout.
Armani Tinsley added 15 points and Lovell Williams scored 10 points. Trailing 29-28 at halftime Stout ran out to a nine point, 41-32 lead five minutes into the second half. Alexander scored 16 points in the second  half. Demitri Martin got the Blue Devils going out of the halftime gate, drawing a foul on his lay-up and completed the three point play to put Stout ahead, 31-29, a lead Stout would never relinquish. Alexander scored six points in a 45 second span around the 16 minute mark to push Stout up 37-32 and guards Luke Geiger and Marcus Hill added a pair of layups. Alexander went to work again, scoring four more points to give Stout a 45-36 lead at 14:16.  The Falcons made a run, pulling to within two points, 47-45, on a 3-pointer by Noah Hanson, but Alexander gave Stout a four point cushion and that would be as close as River Falls would get the rest of the way.  The Blue Devils would build up as much as a 15 point lead, but the Falcons did not roll over, cutting the lead to four points, 72-68, at 1:18.  A basket by Drew Scott and four free throws by Armani Tinsley and two throws by Josh Mericle kept the Falcons at bay.
The Falcons got a game-high 24 points from Alex Ohde, who also had 12 rebounds. Noah Hanson added 16 points, Jack Stensgard 13 and Bryce Phillips 10. The Blue Devils shot .484 (31-64) for the game, but shot .568 (21-37) in the second half. The Falcons shot .400 (28-70) for the game.  Stout out-rebounded River Falls, 41-30. Led by Alexander's 10 boards, the Blue Devils got a chunk of rebounds from their guards, with Tinsley grabbing seven, Geiger six and Mericle and Marcus Hill five each.  | Game Story and Statistics

LAST YEAR WHEN EAU CLAIRE AND STOUT MET
  • The teams split last season, with each team winning on their opponent's court. Stout won 80-79 at Zorn Arena, Jan. 8, 2020, but the Blugolds carried away an 80-54 win out of Johnson Fieldhouse.
  • UW-Stout found themselves in a familiar situation. Down at halftime, the Blue Devils pulled even, then took the lead. But unlike several games earlier this season, Stout did not falter and went on to notch their first conference win of the season, an 80-79 nail-biter over nearby rival UW-Eau Claire Wednesday at Zorn Arena. Stout trailed by nine points, 39-31, at halftime. Led by the game's leading scorer, Jon Ciriacks, the Blue Devils chipped away at the Eau Claire lead and took a lead of their own, 49-45, over the first eight-plus minutes of the half, going on an 18-6 run as Ciriacks hit 10 of his game-high 23 points in the run. It was a situation Stout had been in plenty of games already this season, but this time the Blue Devils were ready to handle their opponent's comeback. The Blugolds took the lead, 52-51, at 10:17. Twenty seconds later, Ciriacks made two free throws to give Stout a 53-52 lead and the Blue Devils never trailed again, notching the program's first conference win since Feb. 7, 2018 and Stout's first win over Eau Claire since Jan. 17, 2018. Stout built up a seven point lead, 61-54, with 7:49 left as Ciriacks sank another pair of free throws, TYreese Alexander completed the layup and a free throw and Cliff McCray hit a 3-pointer in a 7-2 run. Eau Claire would three times tie the game, but Stout would answer to regain the lead each time, the third time on a momentum-solidifying dunk by Alexander with just over a minute left.  Down the final 45 seconds of the game, Stout would answer from the free throw line, making all six free throw attempts - three by Josh Mericle.  Eau Claire had a last gasp as Carter Brooks hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to pull to within 80-78 and then nine seconds later, the Blugolds made one free throw but missed the second. Ciriacks scored 20 points in the second half to lead Stout. Alexander scored 13 points and Marcus Hill came off the bench to score 10. McCray pulled down 10 rebounds. Stout's bench outscored Eau Claire's bench 21-6. The Blue Devils dropped in a season-high 24 of 34 free throws to 15 of 19 for Eau Claire. The Blue Devils committed a season-low 11 turnovers. The Blugolds had five players in double figures. Cole Rabedeaux matched Ciriacks' 23 points. Brooks scored 14, Spencer Page 13, Blake Wacholz 12 and Cam Kuepers 11.  | Game Story and Statistics
  • UW-Eau Claire began a 16-0 run with just over two minutes remaining in the first half and carried it three minutes in the second half and went on to an 80-54 win over UW-Stout at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils moved to within one point, 31-30, on Luke Geiger's free throws with 2:23 left in the first half, but Eau Claire's (13-6, 4-4 WIAC) Cole Rabedeaux started the run with an old-fashioned 3-point play. Eau Claire ran up to a 41-30 halftime lead after Luke Reader banked a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Eau Claire continued the run into the second half until Marcus Hill hit a pair of free throws for Stout to cut Eau Claire's lead to 47-32, the closest Stout would get the rest of the way. The Blugolds shot at a 54.2 percent clip (32-59) for the game from the floor. Stout finished the night shooting 27.3 percent (15-55).  Rabedeaux led all scorers with 25 points, 18 in the first half. Reader added 13 points. The Blugolds scored 46 points in the paint, compared to 18 for Stout.  Luke Geiger led Stout with 16 points. Kyle Jackson and Jon Ciriacks each had 10 points. Ciriacks was held scoreless in the second half.  Stout held an advantage at the free throw line, making 19 of 25 (76 percent), while Eau Claire hit 10 of 23 (43.5 percent). | Game Story and Statistics
