THIS WEEK'S GAMES: After two conference games in November, UW-Stout (2-6-0, 2-0-0 WIAC) is in first place of WIAC, but this weekend's opponents will certainly try to knock the Blue Devils off their perch as the Blue Devils begin a three-game home stand. Stout will host UW-Stevens Point (6-3-1, 1-1-0 WIAC), Friday, Dec. 3 a 7 p.m. The Pointers are currently ranked 15th in the USCHO.com Division III poll. In the conference openers two weeks ago, Stout defeated Northland College and UW-Eau Claire, while the Pointers split their WIAC openers, downing UW-River Falls, but falling to UW-Superior (4-3-0, 2-1-0 WIAC), the Blue Devils' opponent Saturday, Dec. 4 at. 7 p.m.
TONIGHT'S GAME: After a loss to 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point last night, UW-Stout (2-7-0, 2-1-0 WIAC) will look to get back onto the winning track when the Blue Devils entertain UW-Superior (5-3-0, 3-1-0 WIAC) tonight. The Yellowjackets jumped into first place with a 2-1 win over UW-River Falls last night in Superior.

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS:
- The Blue Devils are led in points by freshman Caleb Serre, who has a team-best six assists. Serre had two assists in last night's game. Fellow freshman Peyton Hart and senior Logan Nelson share the lead in goals with three each, and both scored goals in last night's contest. Hart has a pair of assists and Nelson has one assist. Raphael Gosselin is one of three Blue Devils with two goals, along with Dylan Rallis and Landon Lushanko. Matt Dahlseide and Kobe Keller each have four assists. In net, Brennan Kitchen is looking for his first win of the season and the junior has a GAA of 2.61 with a saves percentage of .902. Tyler Masternak has a GAA of 2.78 and a saves percentage of .914.
- The Blue Devils are 12.8 percent (5-39) on the power play and 82.1 on on the penalty kills.
- The Blue Devils have scored 16 goals so far this season, with four players finding the back of the net twice - Raphael Gosselin, Peyton Hart, Logan Nelson, and Landon Lushanko. Matt Dahlseide and Caleb Serre each have dished off four assists. Stout is 4 for 35 on the power play, while their opponents are 5 for 28. Stout has gotten power play goals from newcomers Matt Flodell, John Jebamani, and team captain Raphael Gosselin, as well as Peter Verstegen.
- Stout has five goalies this season and freshman Tyler Masternak picked up both conference wins, and is now posting a 2.01 goals against average with a healthy saves percentage of .935. Brennan Kitchen has a GAA of 2.61 with a saves percentage of .902 and Zack Clouiter has a 4.10 GAA with a saves percentage of .895.
- The Blue Devils finished the abbreviated 2020-21 season at 4-7 overall. The Blue Devils averaged 2.75 goals per game and gave up 3.6 goals. Stout is 6-29 (20.9 percent) on the power play and 7-27 (74.1) on the penalty kill.
- The Blue Devils return their top seven scorers and nine of their top 10 scorers from last season.
- Raphael Gosselin returns as the team's leading scorer from last season, leads the team in points, posting four goals and seven assists for 11 points.
- Kobe Keller led Stout in goals scored with five, of which two were power play goals, and added a pair of assists. Logan Nelson, a three-time all-WIAC honorable mention pick, returns after scoring four goals and three assists. Matt Dahlseide and Peter Verstegan each scored two goals and four assists. Defenseman Joey Petronack had a goal and five assists as a freshman, earning honorable mention honors. Alex Nagel was just behind Gosselin in assists, dishing off six. Alex Stuckert had a goal and three assists, while Brandon Connett had two goals, both power play goals, and an assist during his freshman season.
- Twenty different players scored at least one point last season.
- The Blue Devils return two all-conference goalies in Brennan Kitchen and Zack Cloutier. Kitchen earned honorable mention honors in 2019-20 and Cloutier earned first team honors last season when he set a single season record for goals against average (GAA) with a 1.63 mark. Tyler Masternak joins the Blue Devils' goalie crew that also includes returners Brady Meyers and Marco Zink.
- Stout returns five players who have earned All-WIAC honors at least once throughout their career. Senior forward Logan Nelson has been selected WIAC honorable mention all three years. Junior goalie Brennan Kitchen was a honorable mention pick in 2019-20. Senior forward Raphael Gosselin earned first team honors last season, as did sophomore goalie Zach Cloutier. Sophomore defenseman Joey Petronack was an honorable mention selection last spring.
- The Blue Devils have seven seniors, eight juniors, eight sophomores and 11 freshmen on their 2021-22 roster.
BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- The Blue Devils found themselves down quickly last night agains UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers punched in a goal in the third minute of the game, then added another seven minutes later. But Stout answered back on the power play on a goal by Logan Nelson at 14:22 of the first. The Pointers led 3-1 at the end of the first period, but Stout pulled to within one goal when Peyton Hart scored at 5:38 of the second period to trail 3-2. For the most part, the third period belonged to the Pointers, who scored a goal at 4:51 and a shorthanded goal at 8:02 to take a 5-2 lead. Alex Stuckert scored his first goal of the season at 15:01 to make it 5-3, but the Pointers scored an empty net goal from the opposite end of the ice at 18:23. Tyler Masternak had 31 saves for Stout and the Pointers' Ryan Wagner recorded 15 saves.
- The Blue Devils took home the wins in their first conference road trip, beating Northland, 3-1, on Nov. 18, and UW-Eau Claire, 4-2, Nov. 19.
- UW-Stout saved all of their scoring for the final 5-minutes, 28-seconds of the game as the Blue Devils defeated Northland College, 3-1, Thursday, in Stout's conference opener Thursday. The Blue Devils (0-6-1, 1-0-0 WIAC) were scoreless through the first two period and the vast majority of the third period until Peyton Hart took a pass from Raphael Gosselin and Kobe Keller at 14:32 of the third period to knot the score. The Lumberjacks (2-4-1, 0-2-0 WIAC) had scored midway through the first period on a power play goal by Ty Brown and looked like they were going to make the lone goal stand up. | Game One Story and Statistics
- UW-Stout scored two goals in the third period to defeat nearby rival UW-Eau Claire 4-2 Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena. SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT
- The Stevens Point is 6-3-1, 1-1-0 in the WIAC so far this season. The Pointers were ranked 13th but dropped to 15th in the most recent USCHO.com rankings.
- The Pointers are led by Jordan Fader and Carter Roo both with seven points. Roo and Fader both have three goals and a Pointer-best four assists. Brandon McReynolds leads the Pointers with four goals.
- Ryan Wagner has held down the net for Stevens Point. Wagner has only allowed 1.7 goals per game and has a .97 save percentage with 165 saves. Wagner also started most games last season, allowing 2.26 goals and a .901 save percentage. He shared the goal with Eli Billing last season. Billing allowed 3.31 goals and had a .867 save percentage. Wagner and Billing saw nearly the same amount of time in net last season, but the Pointers have relied on Wagner more this season.

THE POINTERS LAST TIME OUT
- The Pointers played Concordia (Wis.) University back-to-back this Thanksgiving break. they won the first, but Concordia was able to push the second game into a tie.

WHEN STOUT AND STEVENS POINT LAST MET
- The Blue Devils are 22-42-3 against Stevens Point since Stout returned to varsity status in 1997. The Blue Devils split the two games the played last season, winning the first, 4-1, but losing the second. 6-3.
- Three first period goals, good goaltending, and good defense were the keys to success tonight as UW-Stout upended the Pointers, 4-1, Feb. 24. It's the first time the Blue Devils have beaten UW-Stevens Point since February 8, 2014 and broke a 14 game losing streak against the Pointers. In the first period of the game, both teams were figuring each other out as there was only 1 shot in the first six minutes. - UW-Stevens Point scored four second period goals and went on to a 6-3 win over UW-Stout Friday at KB Willett Arena. The Pointers' Zach Zech scored the only goal of the first period. Stout tied the game on Brandon Connett's goal three minutes into the second period before The Pointers started their second period onslaught, which included back-to-back shorthanded goals, including Zech's second goal of the contest. SCOUTING UW-SUPERIOR
- Superior (5-3-0, 3-1-0 WIAC) dropped to the votes receiving category in the most recent USCHO.com D3 Hockey Rankings. The Yellowjackets were receiving two votes, but now are receiving nine.
- Dylan Johnson and Chad Lopez both have five goals for the Yellowjackets, and each has a pair of power play goals. Johnson has a team-high eight assists, while Lopez has four assists. Coltyn Bates has five assists to go with his two goals. Artur Terchiyev, MacGregor Sinclair and Jordan Martin each have four assists. In net, Myles Hektor has worked five games and has a 3-1-0 record, with a GAA of 1.39 and a saves percentage of .944. Both Nick Althaus and Landon Pavlisin have worked two games and both are 1-1-0. Althaus has a GAA of 2.52 and Pavlisin 4.21. Superior is averaging 3.63 goals per contest and are scoring 21.1 percent on the power play, punching in eight power play goals to their opponents' three. Superior is receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll.

THE YELLOWJACKETS LAST TIME OUT
- After two scoreless periods, the Yellowjackets tallied twice in just under six minutes in the third period and then held on during a furious UW-River Falls rally, earning a 2-1 victory Friday night. Scoring chances were hard to come by. Through 40 minutes, the Yellowjackets had outshot the Falcons 16-11, but quality chances could be counted on one hand and the game remained scoreless. That changed in the third period when the Yellowjackets got the break they needed when Dylan Johnson pushed the puck to the slot and defenseman Bradley Stonnell flipped a shot past Falcon goaltender Dysen Skinner for a 1-0 Yellowjackets lead. Two minutes later, Zach Bannister at 7:22 to give Superior a 2-0 lead. River Falls cut the lead to 2-1 at 13:46 to cut the Yellowjacket lead in half, but that would end the scoring.
- Superior lost a close one after Marian broke the 2-2 tie with only 1:12 left to play.
- In a rarity, the Yellowjackets Nov. 23, heading to the Chicago suburb of Crystal Lake to take on Marian University. The game was played at the Crystal Ice House, home ice to a youth hockey association with the nickname of the Yellow Jackets. Former UW-Superior standout Casey VanDamme was instrumental in the association's creation, and has been a longtime supporter of youth sports in the area. To honor one of the program's all-time greats, the Yellowjackets and Sabres faced off in a non-conference contest in front of an arena filled with young hockey players. Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets couldn't pull off a win in front of the Yellow Jackets. WHEN STOUT AND UW-SUPERIOR LAST MET
- The Yellowjackets hold a 44-22-5 advantage over Stout since the Blue Devils returned to varsity status in 1997.
- The Yellowjackets won all three games last year, including a first round WIAC tournament game, 2-1, March 8. The Yellowjackets' Dylan Johnson scored in the second, but Stout's Kobe Keller tied the game. in the third. Chad Lopez scored the winning goal for Superior midway through the third. During the regular season, Superior took a 6-3 win March 3, and a 4-1 win in Menomonie, March 5.
- UW-Stout played UW-Superior closer than they had throughout the season, but the result was the same as the Yellowjackets eliminated the Blue Devils from the WIAC Championship, presented by Culver's, with a 2-1 loss Monday at Wessman Arena. - The most recent poll was just released Nov. 29. UW-Stevens Point ranks 15th, slipping two spots. UW-River Falls is receiving votes (12) as is UW-Superior (3).
- The last time the Blue Devils received votes was in the 2018-19 USCHO.com poll starting Nov. 18, but they dropped out in mid-December. They returned to the "Receiving Votes" category with 10 in the Jan. 7 poll, but dropped out after back-to-back losses to UW-Eau Claire and UW-Superior and have not returned since.

- 2021-22: Goalie Tyler Masternak was selected as the UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after picking up wins over Northland College and UW-Eau Claire in the conference openers.
- 2020-21: Goalie Zack Cloutier was selected as the Kwik Trip/WIAC Athlete of the Week and The Heights/UW-Stout Athlete of the Week.
- 2019-20: Goalie Brennan Kitchen, defenseman Connor Chambers and forward Logan Nelson earned WIAC honorable mention honors. Lucas Carroll was selected to the all-sportsmanship team...Brennan Kitchen was selected as the WIAC hockey athlete of the week after stopping 55 shots in a 4-0 shutout over Northland College, Jan. 25. On the weekend, Kitchen had 88 total saves...After scoring three goals and an assist over the weekend against Bethel University and Hamline University, Konnar Dechaine was selected as the UW-Stout athlete of the week, Jan. 13…After scoring two goals each night in a loss to UW-Stevens Point and a win over UW-Superior, Logan Nelson was selected as the WIAC Athlete of the Week.
UW-STOUT COACH MIKE MACDONALD
- The 2021-22 season marks Mike MacDonald's (6-14-0) second season as the Blue Devils' head coach.
- Before coming to Stout, MacDonald coached four seasons at Curry College, near Boston, Mass. Prior to joining Curry, he spent a year as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.
- MacDonald graduated from the SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Business Administration in 2007. During his time at Geneseo, the team posted a record of 67-33-11, winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2005 and 2006. Over his collegiate career, MacDonald appeared in 109 games and is among the school's all-time leaders in goals (61) and points (120).
- MacDonald played six seasons professionally. He began his professional career in the Central Hockey League, spending one season each with the Odessa Jackalopes and New Mexico Scorpions. The following four seasons he played primarily for the Southern Professional Hockey League's Huntsville Havoc. While there he served as the team's captain for three seasons. In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal to give Huntsville its first ever SPHL Championship. Over his career, MacDonald appeared in 338 professional games with 213 points on 84 goals and 129 assists.
- MacDonald is a native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.
UW-STEVENS POINT COACH TYLER KRUEGER
- Tyler Krueger enters his fifth year as the head coach of the UWSP men's hockey program in 2021-22. With Krueger at the helm, the Pointers have won the WIAC regular season title three times. He holds a career record of 81-20-10, including a 30-6-6 record in WIAC games.
- In the 2020-21 season, Krueger guided his Pointers to the seventh-straight WIAC Championship game. His team was led by WIAC Player of the Year Zach Zech, one of four All-WIAC picks in 2021.
- In 2018-19, he guided the Pointers to the first unbeaten season in Division III history and the sixth national championship in program history. Krueger was honored with the Edward Jeremiah Award as National Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association and the USCHO.com National Coach of the Year.
- His 2018-19 Pointers set a program record with a 31-game unbeaten streak, had the highest winning percentage (.968) and allowed the fewest goals (46). He guided sophomore goaltender Connor Ryckman to the WIAC Player of the Year honor, one of two AHCA/CCM All-Americans (Tanner Karty). His Pointers went 8-0-0 in WIAC play and won the WIAC Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons.
- He was hired as permanent head coach on May 31, 2018. He served as interim head coach for the 2017-18 season and led the Pointers to the Frozen Four. UWSP won the regular season WIAC title with an undefeated 6-0-2 record and he led the Pointers to an NCAA Tournament road win at Adrian in the second round to advance to Lake Placid.
UW-SUPERIOR COACH RICH MCKENNA
- The 2021-22 season will be the sixth for Richard McKenna as head coach of the UW-Superior men's hockey program. McKenna was named to the position May 11, 2016, becoming just the sixth head coach to lead the Yellowjackets since the program was reinstated in 1965.
- In McKenna's first five seasons at UWS, he has had 10 players earn All-WIAC honors and helped six sign professional contracts. He has also coached several current NHL players and draft picks from his time in the USHL and NCAA Division I.
- McKenna led the Yellowjackets to he 2021 WIAC championship with 7-3 overall record and 5-3 mark in the league. Superior won the title -- its first since taking the 2011 crown -- with a 3-2 from-from-behind victory at UW-Stevens Point on March 12.
- McKenna came to the Yellowjackets following a season as the head coach and general manager of the New Jersey Titans of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). He led the Titans to a record of 34-22-4 and a second-place finish in the NAHL's East Division in 2015-16.
- McKenna began his coaching career as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Castleton State in Vermont in 2008-09 where he helped the Spartans to a 15-win season and a berth in the ECAC East playoffs. From there, McKenna spent two seasons (2009-11) as an assistant coach at Division III Wesleyan (Middletown, Conn.) before moving to the Division I ranks at UConn. While there, McKenna helped guide the Huskies to the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals in 2011-12 and then the semifinals in 2012-13.
- He moved into the junior game as the assistant coach and assistant general manager of the Muskegon (Mich.) Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL). There, McKenna worked under head coach and former NHL player Todd Krygier for two seasons, helping the Lumberjacks reach the Clark Cup finals in 2014-15 where they ultimately lost to the Sioux Falls Stampede.
- McKenna played his college hockey at Castleton State and graduated from there in 2007.
THE CONFERENCE:
- UW-Stout is a member of the six-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls. Northland College joined the league last season. UW-Eau Claire was picked to win the 2021-22 league title, according to a preseason poll conducted by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Stevens Point was chosen second, UW-River Falls third, UW-Superior fourth, UW-Stout fifth and Northland sixth.

LENDING AN ASSIST: Goalie Zach Cloutier chalked up an assists against Concordia University-Wisconsin, Oct. 30, 2021...Goalie Evan Bisek recorded an assist against Marian University, Nov. 2, 2019...Two different Stout goalies earned assists during the 2015-16 season. Spencer Viele was awarded an assist Nov. 6 against Bethel University, then added a second assist Jan. 29 at UW-Superior and Chase Hollander earned an assist Nov. 21, 2015, against Concordia. The three helpers mark the first time two UW-Stout goalies have gotten an assist in the same year since the team returned to varsity status 20 years ago...When Spencer Viele was awarded an assist against Bethel University, Nov. 6, 2015, he was not the first Stout goalie, and won't be the last, to get an assist. Since the Blue Devil hockey program returned to varsity play during the 1996-97 season, seven goalies have earned at least one assist. Chase Hollander was awarded an assist for his pass as Danny Ray scored against UW-Superior, Jan. 17, 2015. Corey Koop did it during the 2013-14 season, Jeff Stone during the 2008-09 season, and Jake Schuman during the 2004-05 season each recorded an assist. Jeff Dotson did it in 2000-01 as a freshman, then did it again as a senior in 2003-04. Kelly Elde did it twice during the 1996-97 season.

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com poll Nov. 19, 2018 and received a single vote in the Dec. 3 rankings before dropping out...the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned was with one vote in the Oct. 31, 2016 poll...The last time Stout was mentioned was Jan. 18, 2016...The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com Division III poll, Jan. 18, 2016, after nearly a four year hiatus, receiving five votes. A tie and two straight losses the following week dropped the Blue Devils out of the poll. Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but dropped out. Stout returned to the poll after a win over top-ranked St. Norbert, Jan. 18, 2012, garnering eight votes in the Jan. 21, 2012, poll, effectively ranking the Blue Devils 19th. HOME ICE: The Dunn County Board in 2015 approved renaming the Dunn County Ice Arena the Fanetti Community Center in recognition of Marilyn Fanetti's contribution to fundraising efforts undertaken by the Menomonie Youth Hockey Association to remodel and add to the arena at the Dunn County Recreation Park. Fanetti donated $370,000 to the project and asked that the hockey arena and new community room be named for her family.
