Blue Devil hockey season comes to an end in 2-1 loss

UW-Superior 2, UW-Stout 1

SUPERIOR (March 8, 2021) - UW-Stout played UW-Superior closer than they had throughout the season, but the result was the same as the Yellowjackets eliminated the Blue Devils from the WIAC Championship, presented by Culver's, with a 2-1 loss Monday at Wessman Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Yellowjackets (6-3-0) got on the board first midway through the second period when Dylan Johnson scored at 9:55.

The Blue Devils (4-7-0) had their opportunities in the third period, getting four power play opportunities - and Stout took advantage when Kobe Keller scored at 6:07 in the third to knot the score. Keller, perched just off the net, took a Joey Petronack shot from above the left circle that bounded off the goalie's right arm and back-handed the puck into the net.

The Yellowjackets were able to answer back three minutes later when, seconds after coming off their own power play, Chad Lopez took a rebound and gave Superior the lead again at 9:09.

Stout put 18 shots on net in the third period, but could not pierce the plane. With 25 seconds remaining following an icing call and two timeouts, Stout was able to work the puck. Raphael Gosselin took a shot from high in the slot with less than 10 seconds remaining and Yellowjackets' goalie Myles Hektor was able to kick the puck out to a teammate, allowing Superior to run the clock out.

There were plenty of shots on net throughout the game and both goalies were up to the challenge. Superior's Hektor made 34 saves and Stout's Brennan Kitchen made a season-high 39 saves. Stout was 1-for-5 on the power play and Superior was 0-for-4.

The win moves Superior into the second round game at UW-River Falls Wednesday, March 10.
