A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS:

  • The Blue Devils have scored six goals so far this season, with five different players scoring goals. Logan Nelson leads the Blue Devils with two goals, one each night as Stout lost 3-2 in overtime to Bethel University and 5-4 to Concordia-Wisconsin. Ten different players have scored assists, with Matt Dahlseide and Caleb Serre each dishing off two. Stout is 2 for 9 on the power play, while their opponents are 2 for 6. Stout has gotten power play goals from newcomers Matt Flodell and John Jebamani
  • The Blue Devils finished the abbreviated 2020-21 season at 4-7 overall. The Blue Devils averaged 2.75 goals per game and gave up 3.6 goals. Stout is 6-29 (20.9 percent) on the power play and 7-27 (74.1) on the penalty kill. 
  • The Blue Devils return their top seven scorers and nine of their top 10 scorers from last season. 
  • Raphael Gosselin returns as the team's leading scorer from last season, leads the team in points, posting four goals and seven assists for 11 points.
  • Kobe Keller led Stout in goals scored with five, of which two were power play goals, and added a pair of assists. Logan Nelson, a three-time all-WIAC honorable mention pick, returns after scoring four goals and three assists. Matt Dahlseide and Peter Verstegan each scored two goals and four assists. Defenseman Joey Petronack had a goal and five assists as a freshman, earning honorable mention honors. Alex Nagel was just behind Gosselin in assists, dishing off six. Alex Stuckert had a goal and three assists, while Brandon Connett had two goals, both power play goals, and an assist during his freshman season.
  • Twenty different players scored at least one point last season.
  • The Blue Devils return two all-conference goalies in Brennan Kitchen and Zack Cloutier. Kitchen earned honorable mention honors in 2019-20 and Cloutier earned first team honors last season when he set a single season record for goals against average (GAA) with a 1.63 mark. Tyler Masternak joins the Blue Devils' goalie crew that also includes returners Brady Meyers and Marco Zink.
  • Stout returns five players who have earned All-WIAC honors at least once throughout their career. Senior forward Logan Nelson has been selected WIAC honorable mention all three years. Junior goalie Brennan Kitchen was a honorable mention pick in 2019-20. Senior forward Raphael Gosselin earned first team honors last season, as did sophomore goalie Zach Cloutier. Sophomore defenseman Joey Petronack was an honorable mention selection last spring.
  • The Blue Devils have seven seniors, eight juniors, eight sophomores and 11 freshmen on their 2021-22 roster.
 


BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT

  • The Blue Devils lost a pair of close matches to open the season, falling 3-2 in overtime to Bethel University, Oct. 29, then were tripped up 5-4 by Concordia-Wisconsin, Oct. 30. 
  • In the season opener for both teams, UW-Stout and Bethel University went into overtime and it was the Royals who came out on top as Bethel scored with 31 seconds remaining in the sudden death overtime. | Game Story and Statistics  
  • In a game that saw 17 penalties combined, it was the Falcons of Concordia-Wisconsin University (1-1-0) who upended UW-Stout (0-2-0) with a score of 5-4. The Blue Devils had a lead of 3-1 in the second period, but the Falcons scored four unanswered goals to take the win. | Game Story and Statistics

SCOUTING ST. SCHOLASTICA

  • The Saints have seen five players score goals in their first two games. These five are all returners for the Saint's, with brothers Arkhip and Filimon Ledenkov leading the Saints, just as they did in 2020-21. Arkhip Ledenkov has one goal and two assists so far this season. He finished last year with a Saints-high 12 goals and six assists. His brother, Filimon Ledenkov has two assists. Last year, he lead the Saints with 14 assists, along with 4 goals. Others of note are Michael Talbot and Tyler Hinterser. Talbot has one goal and two assists and Hinterser has one goal and one assist.
  • The Saints are trying to figure out their starting goalie as they lose 2020-21 starting goalie. Jack Bostedt only saw action in four games last year, but was the Saint's goalkeeper in their first game of the season. Bostedt had 27 saves in that game, only allowing two goals. Newcomers Jack Branby and Oliver Quinn split the net in their Saturday night game. Branby saved 27 shots, but still allowed UW-Superior to score 7 goals. Quinn was subbed into the net late in the third period, and managed to stop all seven shots that he faced.

THE SAINTS LAST TIME OUT
  • St. Scholastica played two games their opening weekend. On Friday, Oct. 29, they took on Concordia-Wis and on Saturday, Oct. 30, they matched up against UW-Superior
  • The Saints scored three goals in the third period to erase a three-goal deficit and then senior captain Sam Fuss scored 24 seconds into overtime to give Dave Williams his first head coaching win by a 5-4 margin over Concordia University Wisconsin Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena. | Game One Story and Stats
  • St. Scholastica could not duplicate its come-from-behind magic for the second consecutive night as it fell to Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior 7-0 Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena. | Game Two Story and Stats


WHEN STOUT AND SCHOLASTICA LAST MET

  • The Blue Devils hold a 22-15-5 lead over the Saints since Stout returned to varsity status in 1996.
  • The last time these two teams met, the Blue Devils took care of business, winning 3-2 on October 29, 2016
  • It might be early in the season, but the UW-Stout hockey team may have served notice after a 3-2 win over the College of St. Scholastica Saturday at the Fanetti Community Center. The Saints came into the Blue Devils' arena fresh off a 2-1 win over nationally ranked and WIAC preseason pick UW-River Falls. The Saints were also just a few votes short of appearing in the USCHO.com Top 15 national poll. | Game Story and Statistics



SCOUTING GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE

  • The Gusties finished the shortened 2020-21 season with 5 straight loses. No skater had more than one goal, and Tyler Rock led the team with three assists. Rock didn't return for the Gusties, as they are held up by a large class of first years. Gusties's leading scorer is Patrick Gazich, one of the few scorers of the 2020-21 team. Gazich has two goals and one assists in the Gusties first two games. Newcomer Artem Korolov notched two goals in their second game against Lawrence after not seeing any action in the first game. Brandon McNamara leads the Saints with two assists.
  • The Gusties have played two different goalies in the first two games, Justin Damon and Jackson Hjelle. Damon saw action in net only once last season, allowing goals on the 16 shots he faced. Hjelle is returning for the Gusties, but didn't see any action in net last season. He had 23 saves on 27 shots in the Saturday game against Lawrence

THE GUSTIES LAST TIME OUT
  • The Gusties took on Lawrence College in a double header both Friday, Oct. 29, and Saturday, Oct 30. Gustavus Adolphus split the two games 1-1
  • The Gustavus men's hockey team kicked off its 2021-22 campaign Friday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink and suffered a 5-2 non-conference loss to Lawrence. The Gusties outshot the Vikings 40-26 and were 0-for-2 on the power play. Lawrence went 1-for-5 on the man advantage. Justin Damon (Jr., St. Michael) suffered the loss after making 21 saves. | Game One Story and Stats
  • The Gustavus men's hockey team looked to respond after taking a 5-2 opening night loss against the Lawrence University Vikings. The Gusties retaliated with a 7-4 win while newcomers Artem Korolev (Fy., Moscow, Russia) and Brandon McNamara (Fy., Andover) notched their first collegiate goals in the process. WHEN STOUT AND GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS LAST MET

  • The series between the Gusties and the Blue Devils is tied 10-10-3 since Stout returned to varsity status in 1996.
  • Their last meeting occurred on November 9, 2019, where the Gusties took a 2-0 win.

  • The 2021-22 poll was just released Nov. 1, and WIAC opponents were receiving high rankings. UW-Stevens Point is ranked 6th, with UW-Eau Claire close behind in 7th. UW-River Falls and UW-Superior are both receiving 23 votes. 
  • Stout's upcoming opponent, Gustavus Aldophus, is receiving 3 votes.
  • The last time the Blue Devils received votes was n the 2018-19 USCHO.com poll starting Nov. 18, but they dropped out in mid-December. They returned to the "Receiving Votes" category with 10 in the Jan. 7 poll, but dropped out after back-to-back losses to UW-Eau Claire and UW-Superior and have not returned since.

UW-STOUT COACH MIKE MACDONALD

  • The 2021-22 season marks Mike MacDonald's (4-9-0) second season as the Blue Devils' head coach. (began the 2021-22 season at 4-7-0)
  • Before coming to Stout, MacDonald coached four seasons at Curry College, near Boston, Mass. Prior to joining Curry, he spent a year as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. 
  • MacDonald graduated from the SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Business Administration in 2007. During his time at Geneseo, the team posted a record of 67-33-11, winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2005 and 2006. Over his collegiate career, MacDonald appeared in 109 games and is among the school's all-time leaders in goals (61) and points (120).
  • MacDonald played six seasons professionally. He began his professional career in the Central Hockey League, spending one season each with the Odessa Jackalopes and New Mexico Scorpions. The following four seasons he played primarily for the Southern Professional Hockey League's Huntsville Havoc. While there he served as the team's captain for three seasons. In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal to give Huntsville its first ever SPHL Championship. Over his career, MacDonald appeared in 338 professional games with 213 points on 84 goals and 129 assists.
  • MacDonald is a native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

ST. SCHOLASTICA'S KEVIN MOORE
Kevin Moore was hired as the school's 11th Head Men's Hockey Coach in July of 2020. Moore comes over from Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) foe Adrian College (Mich.), where he spent the previous two seasons as an assistant for the Bulldogs. This past season with Adrian, the Bulldogs captured the NCHA Regular Season and Tournament championships, but had their season cut short before stepping on the ice in the NCAA Division III Tournament due to COVID-19. It marked the first time since 2015-16 they had captured both titles in the same season. In his time at Adrian, Moore coached the defensemen where he oversaw three All-American performers. Prior to Adrian, Moore spent two years at NCAA Division I Princeton University (N.J.) where he was the Director of Hockey Operations. At Princeton, Moore coached the goaltenders and assisted the coaching staff with systematic and practice planning, as well as, player development for players across all positions. He also managed video for game preparation and player skill enhancement.


GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS'S BRETT PETERSON

Brett Petersen is in his 21st season as the head coach of the Gustavus Adolphus men's hockey team for the 2020-21 season. In his 20-year tenure behind the Gustavus bench, Petersen has compiled a 247-228-57 overall record. His 247 wins at Gustavus rank second behind legendary coach Don Roberts. He has been named MIAC Coach of the Year three times, once in 2001-02 after helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place finish in the conference, again in 2009-10 after leading the Gusties to their first MIAC title since 1993, and in 2017-18 after reaching the MIAC playoff championship game with seven more wins than the previous season. While at Gustavus, Petersen has worked with 23 All-Conference players, three MIAC Player of the Year recipients, nine AHCA All-Americans and one National Player of the Year (David Martinson, 2010).

LENDING AN ASSIST: Goalie Zach Cloutier chalked up an assists against Concordia University-Wisconsin, Oct. 30, 2021...Goalie Evan Bisek recorded an assist against Marian University, Nov. 2, 2019...Two different Stout goalies earned assists during the 2015-16 season. Spencer Viele was awarded an assist Nov. 6 against Bethel University, then added a second assist Jan. 29 at UW-Superior and Chase Hollander earned an assist Nov. 21, 2015, against Concordia. The three helpers mark the first time two UW-Stout goalies have gotten an assist in the same year since the team returned to varsity status 20 years ago...When Spencer Viele was awarded an assist against Bethel University, Nov. 6, 2015, he was not the first Stout goalie, and won't be the last, to get an assist. Since the Blue Devil hockey program returned to varsity play during the 1996-97 season, seven goalies have earned at least one assist. Chase Hollander was awarded an assist for his pass as Danny Ray scored against UW-Superior, Jan. 17, 2015. Corey Koop did it during the 2013-14 season, Jeff Stone during the 2008-09 season, and Jake Schuman during the 2004-05 season each recorded an assist. Jeff Dotson did it in 2000-01 as a freshman, then did it again as a senior in 2003-04. Kelly Elde did it twice during the 1996-97 season.

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com poll Nov. 19, 2018 and received a single vote in the Dec. 3 rankings before dropping out...the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned was with one vote in the Oct. 31, 2016 poll...The last time Stout was mentioned was Jan. 18, 2016...The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com Division III poll, Jan. 18, 2016, after nearly a four year hiatus, receiving five votes. A tie and two straight losses the following week dropped the Blue Devils out of the poll. Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. HOME ICE: The Dunn County Board in 2015 approved renaming the Dunn County Ice Arena the Fanetti Community Center in recognition of Marilyn Fanetti's contribution to fundraising efforts undertaken by the Menomonie Youth Hockey Association to remodel and add to the arena at the Dunn County Recreation Park. Fanetti donated $370,000 to the project and asked that the hockey arena and new community room be named for her family.
