MENOMONIE (November 9, 2019) - Gustavus Aldophus' Justin Damon stopped 33 shots from UW-Stout and earned himself a shutout as the Gusties beat the Blue Devils, 2-0.
As the game got underway, both teams were trying to find their stride. Stout (0-3-1) and Gustavus (3-1-0) each had opportunities in the first three minutes, but couldn't capitalize.
On a two on one, Gustavus' Tyler Ebner passed it to Tyler Rock and Rock shot the puck past Kitchen for the first goal of the night. Jared Bromberg also had an assist on the play as the goal was scored at 3:30 of the game.
With just over eight minutes into the first period, Stout was outshooting the Gusties, 4-2, but were down on the scoreboard. With four minutes left in the first period, shots were even at 9-9.
There were no penalties in the first period and the score was 1-0 in favor of Gustavus heading into the first intermission. Gustavus led in shots with 12 and Stout had 10 in the first period
Five minutes into the second period, Stout was outshooting the Gusties, 16-14 in total shots. With 13:16 left in the period, the first penalty was called. Gustavus committed an interference penalty and Stout was going on a power play. With chances to score and shots on net, the score remained 1-0 as Gustavus killed the penalty.
About a minute later after the killed penalty, Stout went into the penalty box and it was Gustavus' turn to go on the power play. But Stout cleared the puck enough and Gustavus didn't have many chances to score. Both teams were skating full strength with eight minutes left in the period.
No score by both teams in the second period. Stout led the shot total at 23-21 going into the second intermission.
The third period saw a lot more action as there were seven penalties committed by both teams, including a five minute major.
Only 2:45 into the period, Stout saw their second power play opportunity, only to come up short. With the killed penalty, Gustavus took that momentum and scored 5:41 into the third period. The goal was the third of the season for Logan Norman. Reid Brown and Tyler Rock both assisted on the play.
With 13:36 left in the game, Stout saw a major advantage as Gustavus committed a five minute major. Stout would skate five on four for the next five minutes and were looking to shorten the lead to one. But the Gusties had other plans and killed off all five minutes with no goals allowed.
After the five minute major penalty, both teams committed a penalty and the game saw a four on four with 7:10 left in the game. The next three minutes of the game saw two more penalties. With 6:38 left, Stout took a penalty and saw themselves down on a four on three. With 5:48 left in the game, a rare three on three was seen as Gustavus committed a penalty. With all of the penalties and power play chances by both teams, no goals were rewarded and the score remained 2-0.
With only a minute left in the game, the Blue Devils pulled Kitchens, but Stout couldn't capitalize being up one man and Gustavus would take the game.
Brennan Kitchens receives the loss on the game and saves 25 shots. But it was Gustavus' Justin Damon who gets the shutout and the win, while stopping 33 saves.
Up next for the Blue Devils is an away matchup against another MIAC opponent. Stout will travel to Augsburg on Thursday, November 14 with the game time set for 7:00pm. Stout will stay on the road as they travel to St. Johns University on November 16.
