MENOMONIE (October 29, 2016) - It might be early in the season, but the UW-Stout hockey team may have served notice after a 3-2 win over the College of St. Scholastica Saturday at the Fanetti Community Center.
The Saints came into the Blue Devils' arena fresh off a 2-1 win over nationally ranked and WIAC preseason pick UW-River Falls. The Saints were also just a few votes short of appearing in the USCHO.com Top 15 national poll.
Following a scoreless first period, Stout (2-0-0) scored the first goal of the game for the second consecutive game when
Riley Colvard scored on the power play, with assists by
Jack Forbort and
Trent Olson at 4:28 of the second period. For the freshman Olson, it was his fourth goal of this very young season.
The Saints (1-1-0) equalized the score only seconds before the end of the second period when Josh Hansen scored with four ticks remaining in the stanza, taking a pass from Max Mettler..
The teams traded goals early in the third period. Stout took the lead when freshman
Adam Kresl scored the first goal of his collegiate career at 3:09, with assists by
Tate Rusk and Forbort.
After the first two periods produced a total of 14 penalties, the last period produced only one, but St. Scholastica took advantage of a Stout penalty when Steven Phee scored on the power play at 5:49, with an assist by Brandon Millin.
Justin Moody got the game winner with just under five minutes remaining in the period, with an assist from
Gavin Smith.
The Saints held a 28-21 margin in shots. Stout's
Spencer Viele turned away 26 shots, while the Saints' Peter Megariotis turned back 18.
Stout has not started the season off 2-0 since the 2011-12 season.
Stout will be at Bethel University, Friday, Nov. 5, then return home to host Gustavus Adolphus College, Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
