Falcons score four unanswered goals, beat Blue Devils 5-4

MENOMONIE (October 30, 2021) - In a game that saw 17 penalties combined, it was the Falcons of Concordia-Wisconsin University (1-1-0) who upended UW-Stout (0-2-0) with a score of 5-4. The Blue Devils had a lead of 3-1 in the second period, but the Falcons scored four unanswered goals to take the win. 

On a fresh sheet of ice, both teams skated to try and generate some offense. But it was the Blue Devils who got on the board first. Cole Beckstead's first career goal as a Blue Devil lifted Stout to a 1-0 lead. The goal was scored 8:04 into the game with an assist for Kobe Keller

With just under eight minutes left in the period, both teams had matching minor penalties and each team skated with four players. 

During the 4 on 4 play, Stout scored at 12:28 of the period as Matt Flodell scored his first career goal as a Blue Devil to make the game 2-0. Flodell's goal was assisted by Joey Petronack

With 4 on 4 play continuing and just 40 seconds after the Blue Devil goal, Concordia's Luc Kreuser beat the Stout goalie to make the game 2-1. 

Going into the first intermission, shots were in favor of the Falcons, 11-10. 

In the first four minutes of the second period, both teams went to 4 on 4 twice, but no goals were accounted for. 

At 8:36 of the period, Logan Nelson took a shot from the top of the circles and beat Concordia's goalie to make the game 3-1. Matt Dahlseide and Raphael Gosselin both had assists on the goal. 

But the Falcons weren't backing down as they scored three unanswered goals. The second goal for Concordia was scored by Jacob Shankar at 10:18 of the period. The next goal for the Falcons was Cory Dennis at 13:22. And at 19:18 of the period, Salvatore Scalise made the game 4-3 in favor of the Falcons going into the second intermission. 

In the third period, Concordia started on the power play. Jordan Guiney scored a power play goal to make the game 5-3. 

Stout went on the power play 1:22 into the period, but the Falcons killed the penalty off. Concordia went on a power play at 3:49 and 6:16 of the period, but Stout killed both penalties off. 

The Blue Devils saw themselves up one man for the next five minutes with 11:12 remaining in the game because of a a five minute boarding call on the Falcons. But Concordia's penalty kill killed off the five minute major and no goals were accounted for. 

With 5:31 left in the game, Stout went on another power play and this time found the back of the net. John Jebamani scored his first career goal at Stout to get within one goal. Logan Nelson and Noah Carson both had assists on the goal. 

But the Falcons held off the Blue Devils to keep the score 5-4 with no time remaining. 

Concordia's Liam McGarva got the win and had 32 saves. Blue Devil's Zach Cloutier finished the game with 35 saves. 

Up next for the Blue Devils is a non-conference matchup at St. Scholastica on Friday, November 5 at 7pm. They will also go on the road to Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, November 6 at 7pm.
