Men's Basketball Preview: Stout returns to action by hosting Alma College Saturday

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: Both UW-Stout (3-1, 0-0 WIAC) and Alma College (1-4), will look to get back into the win column when the Blue Devils host the Scots, Saturday, Nov. 27 at 3 p.m. in a Thanksgiving break contest. The Blue Devils are coming off their first loss of the season after falling to Buena Vista University, Nov. 19, and the Scot are coming off a loss to No. 10 Elmhurst College, Nov. 23. Alma will be at UW-Eau Claire, Sunday, Nov. 28. Stout will open the conference schedule when they UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Dec.1 at 1 p.m., then travel to UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Dec. 4 for a 5 p.m. contest.

A LOOK AT THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS
  • The Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season, a 102-84 loss to Buena Vista University, Nov. 19. 
  • The Ble Devils are averaging 87.8 points per contest, with a high of 107 in their 107-64 win over Northland College, Nov. 10. 
  • On the strength of back-to-back career-highs, Lovell Williams is leading the Blue Devils in scoring, averaging 19.0 points per contest. Williams scored 25 points against Albion University, then beat that the next time out with a 31-point effort, the most individual points scored by a Blue Devil since Luke Geiger scored 31 points Nov. 19, 2019. Jon Ciriacks topped that two weeks later with a 35 point effort. Williams is currently second in the WIAC in scoring. But as much as Williams likes to score, he also likes to contribute to his teammates' scoring and is second in the WIAC in assists, averaging 4.5 per game. Williams had a career-best seven assists against Albion. 
  • Armani Tinsley, last season's leading scorer, is averaging 15.0 points per contest. The senior from Detroit, Mich., is currently 10th in the WIAC in scoring. Tinsley scored a career-best 30 points against Albion College, Nov. 13, in his home state of Michigan. Tinsley is averaging 3.3 assists per contest, eighth in the WIAC.
  • Luke Geiger is averaging 9.5 points and 4.8 rebounds. Jon Ciriacks is averaging 9.0 points and a team-best 5.3 rebounds. After four games, Drew Scott has already exceeded his point total from last year when he scored 22 points in nine game (2.4 ppg). The senior has pitched in 30 points (7.5 ppg) and is averaging 4.3 rebounds. TYreese Alexander has seen limited action this year before the conference season, averaging 4.8 points and is pulling down 4.3 rebounds. 
  • As a team, Stout is shooting 47.0 percent (127-290) from the floor, 35.3 percent (41-116) from 3-point range and 67.5 percent (56-83) from the line. As a team, Stout is averaging 87.8 points,  tops in the WIAC. Stout is allowing 78.5 points. 
  • When Stout scored 107 points against Northland College, Nov. 10, it was the first time the Blue Devils cracked 100 points since Nov. 24, 2019, when they downed Finlandia University, 111-73. Stout shot at a 57.7 percent clip against Northland, hitting 41 of 71 shots, their best shooting percentage since hitting 58.7 percent (37-63) Dec. 7, 2017 at Silver Lake College. 
  • Stout is outrebounding their opponents, 38.0-35.0. 

THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVIL PREVIEW
  • The Blue Devils return starters guard Armani Tinsley, last year's leading scorer, forward TYreese Alexander, guard Luke Geiger and post Drew Scott.  
  • In addition, the Blue Devils return forward Jon Ciriacks, who missed five of the nine games last season due to injury and had been a starter the previous two years  
  • Tinsley and Alexander were WIAC honorable mention picks last season and Ciriacks is a two-time WIAC honorable mention choice.  
  • Tinsley scored in double-digits in all nine games and was the team's leading 3-point shooter, draining 24 shots from downtown. Alexander finished his second season with the Blue Devils by averaging 8.8 points and matched Geiger with a team-best 4.9 rebounds.  
  • Ciriacks, Geiger, Alexander and Tinsley have been with the program the longest and they will provide the foundation for the team this season. Ciriacks and Geiger are in their fifth year with the program and Alexander and Tinsley begin their third seasons in Menomonie.
  • In limited action last season, Ciriacks, who was injured in the second game and only played in four games, averaged 13.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and continued to step outside to drain 8 of 16 3-pointers. Geiger averaged 10.9 points and hit 14 3-pointers. Scott averaged 16 minutes on the court and pulled down 3.6 rebounds per contest in his first year as a Blue Devil. 
  • Point guard Lovell Williams, the WIAC newcomer of the year last season, will be a key cog to the Blue Devils' season.  Williams averaged 12.0 points per contest, shooting 39 of 76 field goals, shooting 51.3 percent, and 18 of 33 3-point shots for a 54.5 percent success range from beyond the arc.  
  •  Forward Brody Fox returns after seeing action in all nine games and point guard Kyle Williams returned last season after a year off, beginning his third season with the Blue Devils. 
  •  Carson Moe, Preston Briggs, Nick Jungel, Jackson Noll and Cory Hoglund saw limited action last season and Lake expects each to make contributions to the team this year.  
  •  Newcomers to the program include senior transfer Jarnard Smith, Jr., who transferred from Kalamazoo College, Cody Miller, a transfer from NAIA Valley City State, and true freshmen Jacob Walczak, Brenden Weis and Peter Howard.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
  • UW-Stout was unable to hold on after trailing by only one point at half, losing 102-84 to Buena Vista University on Friday night at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils (3-1, 0-0) started the first half with four consecutive 3-pointers by Lovell Williams, jumping out to a quick 12-3 lead. Williams was able to connect on another 3-ball later in the half. Buena Vista (2-1, 0-0 ARC) was unable to gain back the lead after the barrage of threes, and got into even more trouble with fouls. SCOUTING ALMA COLLEGE
  • Alma College is 1-4 on the season. The Scots will be at UW-Eau Claire Sunday.
  • The Scots are led by two returners, Cole Kleiver and Brandon Rake. Kleiver is averaging 16.5 points so far this season. He also achieved this same feat in the 14 games the Scots played last year. Rake is nearly averaging a double-double with 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. Rake finished last season by averaging 11 points and 7 boards. | Statistics

THE SCOTS LAST TIME OUT
  • Alma traveled to 10th-ranked Elmhurst University on Tuesday, Nov. 23. The Bluejays came out victorious against the Scots ,by a final score of 94-54. Elmhurst got out to a fast start, grabbing an early 9-0 lead and going into halftime up 21. The Bluejays went on another 9-0 run to start the second half and eventually extended their lead to 32. Alma out-rebounded the Bluejays by a total of 42-39, including 16 offensive boards. Brandon Rake led the Scots with 15 points while collecting seven rebounds. Gabe Bourdeau also totaled seven rebounds. Jack Poling came off the bench and scored seven points. Alex King followed behind Poling with six points of his own as a reserve. Alma outscored the opponent on second chance points, 23-9.Alma took a swing through the state of Illinois over the last week, traveling to Illinois Wesleyan University, Nov. 19 and Augustana College, Nov. 20. 
  • The Alma College men's basketball team was met with their first nationally ranked team of the season on Friday, Nov. 19. The Scots fell to No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan University, 91-74, in Art Smith Arena. The Scots hung close for much of the game but were ousted in the final 10 minutes of play. The game started with Illinois Wesleyan creating a 7-2 scoring run, but the Scots battled back and tied the game up 8-8 in the first four minutes of the game. Alma would then lead the game for the next 10 minutes of play until the Titans took a one-point lead. The final minutes of the first half proved to be intense and had five lead changes in less than seven minutes.   •  The Alma College men's basketball team played their second game of a back-to-back against the Augustana College (Ill.) Vikings on Saturday. The Scots lost, 72-66. Alma stayed close all game long until the final minutes, when they forced to foul to stop time and try to narrow the Vikings' lead. The game started with the Scots taking an early lead, which was then narrowed and overtaken by the Vikings. The first half continued to be a close game with both teams taking several 1-point leads over one another. WHEN ALMA AND STOUT LAST MET
  • UW-Stout had three players rack up double-digit scoring numbers, but the Blue Devils found themselves in too big a deficit early and lost at Alma College, 95-71, Nov. 13, 2019, in Alma, Mich. Alma rolled to a double-digit lead in the first half and Stout could not recover to find their way out. Stout was led by Jon Ciriacks, who had 16 points, his sixth game of the season scoring in double digits. Freshman Cliff McCray had 12 points, his fourth game of the season in double figures.  Luke Geiger recorded his first career double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. The Scots also had three players tally double digit points. led by Cole Kleiver's game-high 32 points. Kyle Woodruff had 22 points and Brandon Rake 11. Stout shot 25 of 74 from the floor (.338), 9 of 23 from 3-point range (.391) and 12 of 18 (.667) from the line. The Scots hit 36 of 73 from the floor (.493), 14 of 29 from 3-point range (.483) and 9 of 11 (.818) from the line. This was the first meeting between the two programs. | Game Story and Stats

AWARDS AND HONORS: 2021-22: Armani Tinsley was named the UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after scoring the game-winning field goal against St. Olaf in the season opener...2020-21: TYreese Alexander and Armani Tinsley were all-WIAC honorable mention selections...Lovell Williams was selected as the WIAC newcomer of the year...Luke Geiger was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship team...Luke Geiger was the WIAC Athlete of the Week, March 1.

BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played what is believed to be their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.


UW-STOUT COACH JIM LAKE
  • Jim Lake (18-45) is in his fourth season in 2021-22 as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Lake came to Stout after 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State. The Bulldogs won the 2017-18 NCAA Division II national title. 
  • Lake served at Ferris State University for a total of 10 years, the last five years beginning with the 2013-14 season as the program's top assistant men's basketball coach. Lake had served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs in two different stints over the previous decade, working as a part-time assistant coach from 2011-13 before moving up to the full-time lead position, and as a volunteer assistant coach from 2003-06.
  • During five seasons as the Bulldogs' top assistant coach, Lake helped Ferris State to four consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament championships and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, culminating in a 38-1 overall record and the 2018 NCAA Division II national title with a 71-69 win over Northern State University in March.

ALMA COLLEGE COACH RYAN CLARK
  • Ryan Clark became the head coach of the Alma College men's basketball program in April of 2019. He has been a fixture in the Scots' athletic department since 2012 and has had success leading both the men's and women's basketball programs at Alma. During the 2019-20 season, Clark guided the Scots to a 13-13 record and a berth in the MIAA Postseason Tournament. During his first campaign at the helm, Alma defeated Defending-National Champion Wisconsin-Oshkosh at Art Smith Arena on December 6. The Scots also took down rival Hope College in the program's first road win against the Dutchmen since the 1993-94 season. 



CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. There will be no WIAC preseason poll this year.


DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils will have a busy early December and will begin by opening league play by hosting UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m., then travel to UW-Whitewater, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. Stout returns home to host Lakeland University, Monday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m., then is off to the University of Dubuque, Wednesday, Dec. 8, for a doubleheader with the women's programs. Six days later, Stout will host Greenville University, Monday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.

SCOUTING LAKELAND UNIVERSITY
  • The Muskies have twice surpassed the 100-point mark as a team, and have done it in their last two outings. Lakeland downed Finlandia University, 119-71, Nov. 10, then defeated North Central University, 104-94. The Muskies opened the season with an 85-81 loss at Crown College. Lakeland has four starters and five players averaging in double digits in points. Cam Jaeger leads the way with 22.0 points per contest and has scored more than 20 points in every game, starting the season with 24 points against Crown. Earl Lewis is averaging 12.8 points, Aiden Polzin 11.8, Travis Kohlmann 11.0 and Tylan Huff 10.3. Lakeland is outscoring their opponents, 95.8-80.8, and outrebounding their opponents, 45.0-40.5. THE MUSKIES LAST TIME OUT
  • Lakeland improved to 3-1 on the season with a 104-94 win over North Central (Minn.) University Nov. 12. The Muskies won their third straight game and won for the second time in three games played in the state of Minnesota this season. Cam Jaeger and Travis Kohlmann both scored 21 points each to lead Lakeland. Jaeger made 6 of 13 from the field and 7 of 8 from the foul line, while Kohlmann came off the bench to hit five three-pointers and add five rebounds and four assists. Aiden Polzin added 14 points, Earl Lewis contributed 12 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Barber made it five Muskies in double figures with 10 points plus a game highs of 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. | Game Story and Statistics

WHEN LAKELAND AND STOUT LAST MET
  • With the exception of the opening basket, UW-Stout did not lead until almost a minute in the overtime, but the Blue Devils led when they needed to and came up with their first win of the season, a 97-94 overtime win at Lakeland University Nov. 16, 2019. Trailing by 15 points early in the second half and 12 points with 2:35 remaining, the Blue Devils would come back to force overtime.  Behind the eight ball 79-67 with 2:35 left, Stout outscored the Muskies 16-4 to tie the game. Luke Geiger scored 10 points down that final stretch and Jon Ciriacks scored four of his game-high 29 points. THE LAKELAND AND STOUT HISTORY
  • The two programs have played only twice in the last 10 years, but the teams met quite a few times the NAIA District 14 tournament back in the day. Between 1966 and 1985, the teams played four times in the tournament. Stout's only loss to Lakeland came during the 1965-66 season when the 20-2 Blue Devils lost only their third game of the season, a 76-69 decision, March 1, 1966. The Blue Devils exacted revenge in 1969 when they defeated the Muskies 100-91 in the District 14 finals and advanced to the NAIA Championship in Kansas City. The 1975 team won 101-82 and the 1985 team won 80-61. In non-NAIA play, Stout downed Lakeland, 104-65 in the second game of the season and the 2011 Blue Devils won 89-74. Stout holds a 7-1 lead in the series. 
LAKELAND UNIVERSITY COACH SAM SCHROEDER
  • Sam Schroeder is in his fourth year as head coach of the Lakeland men's basketball team. Schroeder took over as coach in 2017 after six years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the program. He has 41 wins in his first two years as head coach while leading Lakeland teams that have ranked among the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and NCAA leaders in a number of statistical categories. The Muskies are coming off a 13-13 record in 2019-20 that also netted a fourth-place finish in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and a home game in the first round of the NACC Tournament. Lakeland won seven of its final 10 games to close the regular season and led the conference in three-pointers made for the second time in three years.

UW-EAU CLAIRE'S MATT SIVERLING
  • Matt Siverling (141-125, overall; 112-101, at UWEC) enters his 10th season as head men's basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 2020-21. Between 2004-07 he was assistant men's basketball coach at UW-Eau Claire In Siverling's first six seasons as the Blugold head coach, his teams have twice finished in the top four in the WIAC. In the 2019-20 season, the Blugolds finished in the top four in the WIAC and made it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000-01. Prior to his return to Eau Claire, Siverling was the head men's basketball coach at UW-Superior for two seasons. With the Yellowjackets he led the team to two WIAC Tournament appearances. In 2011-2012 his 8-8 conference record was the team's best WIAC mark in ten seasons.
 
  • UW-LA CROSSE'S KENT DERNBACH
  • Kent Dernbach (54-30 at UW-La Crosse/62-35 overall) is in his fifth season as head men's basketball coach at UW-La Crosse and fifth season overall. Named head coach March 12, 2018, Dernbach served as the Eagles' interim head coach for the 2017-18 season. He is 30-23 overall and 15-13 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in his first two seasons. UWL finished 17-10 overall and 10-4 in the WIAC in 2018-19, placing second in the league standings. It was the Eagles' highest finish in the WIAC since capturing the regular-season crown in 2015-16. UWL also hosted a WIAC Tournament Semifinal in 2018-19 for the first time since 2015-16. The 17 victories in 2018-19 were the most since finishing 17-10 in 2013-14. The Eagles earned an at-large bid to the 2019 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championship under Dernbach, the team's second appearance (2006, 2019) in school history. UWL was one of 20 teams to earn an at-large bid to the national championships.

UW-STEVENS POINT'S BOB SEMLING
  • Bob Semling enters his 16th season at UW-Stevens Point in 2019-20 and has won four national championships with the Pointers. In 14 seasons at UW-Stevens Point, Semling has led the Pointers to two NCAA Division III national championships (2010, 2015), in addition to being an assistant on the back-to-back national championship teams of 2004 and 2005. Through his 14 seasons as head coach, Semling has compiled an overall record of 301-89, which includes a 160-43 mark in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. His .772 career winning percentage entering this season was the highest among active Division III coaches and ranks 10th all-time among all divisions for coaches with at least 10 seasons as a head coach. On January 11, 2014, Semling became the all-time winningest coach in UW-Stevens Point program history by recording his 201st career victory at UW-Superior. He won his 300th game at UWSP on Feb. 19, 2019, with an 89-61 victory over UW-Eau Claire in the first round of the 2019 WIAC Tournament.

UW-WHITEWATER'S PAT MILLER
  • Pat Miller is in his 20th year at the helm of the program. Entering the 2018-19 season, Miller ranked fourth all-time in winning percentage among coaches with a minimum of 10 seasons coaching at the NCAA D-III level. A four-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Miller has led the Warhawks to two NCAA Division III national championships. In 2011-12, UW-Whitewater won its first national title since 1989, when Miller was a co-captain and the Warhawks' third-leading scorer. The 2011-12 team finished 29-4 overall and 13-3 in the WIAC, winning its NCAA Tournament games by an average margin of over 14 points per contest. Two years later, in 2013-14, UW-Whitewater won the championship with overall and conference records identical to those in 2011-12. The Warhawks were dominant through their first five games of the NCAA Tournament before defeating Williams (Mass.) in a thrilling national title game, 75-73. Quardell Young's lay-up and free throw with one second remaining was the deciding play of the contest.
UW-OSHKOSH'S MATT LEWIS
  • Matt Lewis begins his third season as the Titans' head coach, but his first as not wearing the interim head coaching job. Lewis led UW-Oshkosh to a 29-3 record, the WIAC regular season championship, the NCAA Division III championship title and several school marks during his debut season. The Titans claimed their first outright WIAC title since 1978 before going on to win six NCAA postseason games by an average of 15.5 points en route to the national title. UW-Oshkosh averaged 93.7 points in its six Division III Championship victories and set the school's NCAA postseason scoring record with its 108-point performance against University of Northwestern (Minn.) during the second round.

A LOOK AT THE 2020-21 BLUE DEVILS
  • The Blue Devils are led in scoring by a couple of newcomers this season, but a couple of familiar names are having a resurgence. Senior transfer Armani Tinsley is averaging 15.4 points, Freshman Lovell Williams is averaging 11.1 points. Luke Geiger has scored 20 and 25 points, respectively, in the two wins over UW-Whitewater last week and Jon Ciriacks, playing in his first games since being injured in the season opener, has scored 15 points in each of the last two games. Geiger has jumped his average from 7.5 points per game coming into the Whitewater games and is now averaging 11.3 points. Geiger has also pulled down 4.9 rebounds, second on the team. 
  • Armani Tinsley is the team's leading scorer and the senior transfer has scored in double digits in all eight games, averaging 15.4 points per contest. He scored a season-high 19 points in the first game with UW-Eau Claire.  Tinsley leads the team in 3-point baskets with 21, second in the league (2.63/game). 
  • True freshman Lovell Williams came out of the gates firing, scoring 20 points in his first collegiate game and is averaging 11.1 points. After a pair of six point games, Williams returned to earlier season form and scored 14 points in the second game with La Crosse. Williams leads the team in assists with 22 total.
  • TYresse Alexander notched his third double-double as a Blue Devil, scoring 22 points in the second game of the season against River Falls and pulled down 10 rebounds. Alexander is averaging 9.4 points and a team-best 5.0 rebounds. Alexander is second in the WIAC in field goal percentage at .610 (36-59). 
  • Stout averaged 73.4 points and giving up 79.4 points.
