Williams' 31 points not enough as Buena Vista comes away with the win, 102-84

UW-Stout 84, Buena Vista University 102

MENOMONIE (November 19, 2021) - UW-Stout was unable to hold on after trailing by only one point at half, losing 102-84 to Buena Vista University on Friday night at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (3-1, 0-0) started the first half with four consecutive 3-pointers by Lovell Williams, jumping out to a quick 12-3 lead. Williams was able to connect on another 3-ball later in the half. Buena Vista (2-1, 0-0 ARC) was unable to gain back the lead after the barrage of threes, and got into even more trouble with fouls. Stout was able to draw 15 fouls in the first half alone.

The Beavers gained some momentum after Williams had his first miss of the night after starting the game 5 for 5 from deep. After the miss, Buena Vista's Zane Neubaum converted a 4-point play, taking the lead, 33-36, with 6:46 left in the half. Neubaum finished the game with 18 points, five assists and six boards. The Beavers were able to hold on to the lead for the rest of the half, but Stout kept right on their tail, entering the break trailing, 48-49.

Entering the second half, it was the Beaver with the hot hand, connecting on four of their first five shot attempts. Stout missed their first four shots, allowing the Beaver lead to quickly extend to 10. Armani Tinsley kick-started a small Blue Devil run. Tinsley forced a turnover, and then later hit a three, bringing the deficit to only seven. Buena Vista answered back with their own three, extending the lead back to 10. Buena Vista kept the pressure up, leading by 10 or more for the rest of the game.

Tinsley was unable to get going from the floor, only hitting 2 of his 13 shots; however, he was able to create opportunities for his other Blue Devils, dishing out seven assists in the game. Williams finished the game with a career high 31-points shooting 50 percent from deep (7-14). Luke Geiger finished with a nice all-around stat-line, recording 14 points, five assists, four rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Brody Fox also chipped into the Stout scoring with 12 points.

Buena Vista was led by Michael Demers who finished the game with 21 points and 5 assists. Jake Thompson had nine points and nine assists and Garrett Sittner had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Stout shot 38 percent from the floor (28-73) and connected on 29 percent of their threes (12-41). Buena Vista hit 59 percent of their shots (28-64) and were able to connect on 46 percent of their 3-pointers (15-33). The beavers were able to out-rebound the Blue Devils 44 to 34, but Stout forced 21 turnovers while only committing 11 of their own.
