MENOMONIE (November 14, 2021) - UW-Stout's
Spencer Schultz (Jr, Rosemount, Minn) and
Emily Cunningham (Fr, Wisconsin Dells) will compete at the 2021 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Ky., Saturday, Nov. 20. The championship is hosted by Spalding College.
Both earned individual berths to the championship after competing at the NCAA Division III North Regionals Nov. 13. Schultz finished 10th in the men's regional held at Whitetail Golf Course, while Cunningham placed 16th in the women's regional.
Schultz will be making his third consecutive appearance in the national meet. Schultz competed as a member of the Blue Devil men's team that qualified in 2018 and 2019. The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Schultz set an 8-kilometer career-best at the regional meet Saturday with his 10th place finish of in a time of 24-minutes, 52.64-seconds.
Schultz's appearance at the national meet will extend a streak of at least one UW-Stout competitor at the national championship since 2010.
Cunningham is making her first trip to the collegiate national meet. The freshman paced the Blue Devils at the regional meet with a time of 22:36.43 on the 6-kilometer course, also a collegiate-best. This is the second consecutive championship a member of the Stout women's team advanced to the NCAA Championship. Jessica Petruzates competed at the 2019 meet, which was also held in Louisville.
Thirty-two teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top seven-person team automatically qualified from each of the 10 regions, for a total of 10 teams. Twenty-two additional teams were selected at-large.
Seventy individuals, the first seven student-athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team, were selected to participate in each championship.
Spalding University and the Louisville Sports Commission are hosting the championships Nov. 20 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kenturcky. The men's race will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern, followed by the women's race at noon Eastern.
