MENOMONIE (November 21, 2019) - For the third consecutive season, the UW-Stout men's cross country team will be competing at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championship.

The UW-Stout men's cross country team will be competing in their third consecutive NCAA Divison III Men's Cross Country Championship this weekend when they compete at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. The men's race will begin at 10:45 a.m. Eastern (9:45 a.m. Central). The meet is hosted by Spalding University.  Flotrack will provide live video coverage in a pay-per-view format. Please allow enough time to set up the account. Live results will also be available.

Stout qualified to the national meet the last two seasons and are making their fourth national appearance since the 2014 season. Previous to the 2014 team, the Blue Devil men's team had qualified to the NCAA national meet in 1981. Stout qualified to the NAIA national meets in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1986.

Competing for the Blue Devils will be seniors Mike Friedman (Oconto Falls) and Michael Fifield (Oconto Falls), junior Brian Mathews (Boscobel), sophomores Spencer Schultz (Rosemount, Minn), Matthew Ryan (Oconomowoc) and Mitchell Popp (Eagle River) and freshman Ethan Hinderman (Oshkosh). Freshman Ian Williams (Waterford) is the Blue Devils' alternate.

The Blue Devils finished fifth at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional, Nov. 16, at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne and received the at-large bid. Five teams received bids to the national from the Midwest Region. The top two finishing teams, North Central College and UW-La Crosse, received automatic bids and the University of Chicago, coached by former UW-Stout coach Chris Hall, and Washington University, joined Stout with at-large bids.

Schultz, Friedman and Fifield earned all-region honors. Schultz was 13th at the Midwest Region meet, Friedman 26th and Fifield 34th.

Stout finished 22nd at the NCAA national meet in 2018 and 2017.  The Blue Devils finished 23rd in 2014 and 10th in 1981.

The since-graduated Dan Ressler paced the Blue Devils last season at the national meet with a 99th place finish. Friedman finished 107th in a time of 25:39.3, Fifield placed 220th (26:21.1) and Schultz finished 248th.  Fifield is making his third cross country national appearance and placed 250th at the 2017 championship. Mathews, Ryan and Hinderman are making their first national appearance. Matt Schauf is in his 13th season as the Blue Devils' head coach.

The 2016 national championship was held on the same course as the 2019 event in Louisville, Ky. Devin Sauvola was an individual qualifier that season.

In the latest NCAA Division III men's polls, released by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the Blue Devils moved up one spot to 30th.

Williams College this week surpassed defending national champion North Central College as the No. 1 ranked team, ending the Cardinals' 29-week run as the No. 1 team in the poll.

Behind Williams and North Central, Pomona-Pitzer moved into the No. 3 spot, followed by Carnegie Mellon in fourth, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in fifth, Johns Hopkins in sixth and State University of New York at Geneseo in seventh. UW-La Crosse, Wartburg College, and Washington University (Mo.) round out the rest of the top-10, respectively. The University of Chicago is ranked 12th,

There will be a new individual national champion. Of the top 10 finishers last year, seven were seniors.  North Central's Dhruvil Pakel and Al Baldonado finished first and second, respectively, to close out their senior season. UW-La Crosse's Josh Schraeder is the top returning runner after a fourth place finish last season. Schrader won the 2019 WIAC individual title.
