Mad Dawg Invitational results
STEVENS POINT (October 1, 2017) - If the plot looks familiar, just Google "WIAC Women's Golf" and "2016" and you'll remember a very similar storyline heading into the conference championship.
UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh sent a timely reminder Sunday to UW-Stout that they are still very much players in what will go on next week at Reedsburg Country Club. They shot 323 and 324, respectively, in the final round of the UW-Stevens Point Mad Dawg Invitational at Stevens Point CC, nearly erased double-digit deficits and almost caught the Blue Devils for the title.
Senior
Rachel Hernandez played her final 11 holes in even-par to salvage a 79 to finish tied for second, winning a scorecard playoff over Micayla Richards of UW-Oshkosh for the runner-up medal. That helped Stout shoot a 332 and, with a 36-hole total of 657, hold off the Warhawks and Titans to take home the team trophy.
Whitewater, behind meet medalist Ashley Hofmeister (76-79), who edged Hernandez by two shots, was second at 660 and Oshkosh third at 661. Defending champion Viterbo was a distant fourth at 674.
The three teams atop the Mad Dawg Invitational leaderboard were the same three that took turns sharing the top spot at the WIAC Championship a year ago with Stout coming out on top in the end. Likewise, Whitewater's Hofmeister and Stout's Hernandez were the top two finishers at the 2016 conference tournament.
Sophomore
Madison McCambridge shot 80, bettering her first-round score by seven shots, to finish tied for eighth at 167 and junior
Marie Allo shot her second straight 84 to tie for 10th at 168. However, the Blue Devils were forced to count an 89 from No. 3 golfer
Trystin Kluess and threw out a 90 from No. 4 golfer
Alexa Filipiak as the two sophomores struggled on Day 2.
Stout junior
Hannah Baker shot final-round 90. Her 181 total was tops among the eight golfers competing as individuals in the 73-player tune-up for next week's WIAC Championship. The WIAC Championship is Oct. 6-8 at Reedsburg Country Club.
