MENOMONIE (October 15, 2016) - UW-Stout's
Katie Govin (So, Chippewa Falls) managed something only a few teams have done all year against UW-Whitewater - she picked up a singles win against the Warhawks.
Govin, with a come-from-behind, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7, win at No. 5 singles over Rachel Simeon, is only the second player in the WIAC to snag a singles win against a Whitewater opponent this season.
The win by Govin is also the first team point the Blue Devils (5-7, 2-4 WIAC) have picked up against perennially powerful UW-Whitewater since Oct. 15, 2010, when Allie Hinman, the Blue Devils' No. 1 singles player, recorded a win.
But more importantly the win gives the Blue Devils an additional leg-up in seeding at No. 5 singles for the upcoming WIAC Championship, which is scheduled for next weekend, Oct. 22-23 at the Nielsen Tennis Center on the UW-Madison campus.
The Warhawks (9-1, 5-0 WIAC) took the other eight matches in the 8-1 win, although
Katie Kreibich (So, Woodbury, Minn) and
Annie Sandry (Fr, Clara City, Minn) put up a solid fight at No. 3 doubles, losing 8-5.
Anna Lano (Sr, Chaska, Minn), playing at No. 6 singles, after getting blanked in the first set, 6-0, made for an interesting match before dropping the second set, 6-4.
The match marked the final home matches for seniors Lano and
Emma Pedersen (Sr, Eau Claire).
The meet began at the South Courts, but were moved inside early during singles matches after a persistent drizzle.
The seedings for the WIAC Championship are expected to be released Wednesday, Oct. 19.
