THE BLUE DEVILS (3-0): Stout's young season is off to a good start after three consecutive victories to open the season. The Blue Devils defeated Gustavus Adolphus College, Tuesday night after getting two blowout wins in Bethel's season-opening tournament.
Josh Kosloske stole the show in the opener, scoring a career-high 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. He has been mopping up down low all season, averaging 9.7 rpg and has 12 offensive boards through three games. In Stout's 79-49 win over Simpson College, newcomer
Chris Hortman led all players with 21 points and is averaging over 14 on the season. As expected,
Alex Oman leads the Blue Devils' scoring attack, averaging 17.3 points per contest and has scored at least 15 in his last seven games.
Jarvis Ragland leads the team in three point percentage and maintains an average of 13.7 ppg.
Erik Olson has directed the offense from the point guard position, dishing out 18 assists through the pair of games. |
2012-13 Statistics
GOING STREAKING: Dating back to last season, the Blue Devils are on a six game win streak, their longest of such in six seasons. During their 2005-06 campaign, Stout strung together two separate win streaks longer than their current one. First, they won ten in a row, but most recently, they cashed seven consecutive wins. Three times since then, the Blue Devils have rode a four game win streak, but lost all three attempts to make it five.
THE OMAN EFFECT: Alex Oman played in 14 games last season, all after the winter break. Upon returning, he made an immediate impact. He was the workhorse for the Blue Devils, leading the team in scoring and rebounding as well as minutes on the court. Stout went 3-8 overall when Oman did not see the floor, a winning percentage of .273. After his return, they went 6-8 (.429). Oman especially made his mark in WIAC games. Stout was 0-5 without him in league play, averaging just over 51 points per game. Once Oman stepped onto the court, They were 4-7, and bumped their scoring average up by nearly seven points (58.3 ppg). Oman led the Blue Devils in scoring in 11 of the 14 games he played. Against then 12th-ranked Stevens Point, he nailed a half-court buzzer beater to send the game into overtime, a game in which they won, one of three wins to end the season. Blue Devil fans will hope Oman can start the season eligible and healthy as he will be a huge factor in their success again this year. So far this season, the junior from Lake Elmo, Minnesota is leading the team with 17.3 points per game and has scored at least 20 points in four of his last six games. Most importantly, Stout has won all six of those games.
CHASING THE RECORD BOOKS: Erik Olson has been climbing the Stout leaderboard in assists and recently passed Bill Rozakis to move into third place all time with 334. 25 more assists this year will make Olson the all-time career assists leader in the Stout record books. Olson finished the 2011-12 season with108 assists, averaging 5.4 per contest. When he recorded 11 assists against Northland College, Nov. 26, he matched a career-high from Jan. 30, 2010, against UW-Whitewater. In 2010-11, Olson led the WIAC in assists with 4.8 per contest, 120 total. Olson was second in the WIAC in steals with 1.79 per contest, 45 total. Last year, Olson has had fewer than four assists in a single game only three times.
DID YOU KNOW?: Against Simpson College, three Blue Devils scored at least 18 points (Hortman, 21; Oman, 20; Ragland, 18). The last time three Stout players scored at least 18 points in one game was February 17, 2010. In a 102-72 rout over 0-23 Silver Lake College, Eric Hostetter scored 27 points to lead Jerrel Enerson-Matthews and Mahlon Thomas, who each netted 20.
STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: In their home opener Tuesday night, Stout used offensive rebounds and second chance points to defeat Gustavus Adolphus College, 59-55, at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout was able to haul in 16 offensive boards compared to only five for Gustavus, leading to 16 second chance Blue Devils points. Forward
Alex Oman grabbed five offensive boards and seven total.
Chris Hortman led the team in rebounding with nine total rebounds, including four on the offensive end. The game remained tight in the first half, with the teams going basket for basket. With about 13 minutes left in the half, the Blue Devils were able to put together a 10-2 run behind three offensive boards and eight points from Oman, giving them a 19-12 lead. Gustavus was able to cut the lead to four before the end of the half, as the teams went into the locker room with the score 26-22. Both teams came out firing in the second half, as Gustavus guard Ben Biewen hit two quick three-pointers, making the score 28-28. After his second three, Stout put together 10-0 run, with Hortman and
Adam Wadzinski both hitting shots from downtown. Stout wouldnt relinquish the lead for the rest of the game, but the Gusties made it interesting, outscoring the Blue Devils 11-2 at one point to tie the game at 51 with just over three minutes to go. A putback by Hortman then led to a 6-0 Stout run, putting the Blue Devils in position to seal the victory with free throws. Oman led three Blue Devils in double digits, with 17 points. Hortman chipped in 13, and Kosloske added 10 points on 4-7 shooting. |
Story and Stats
NORTHLAND COLLEGE (0-2): Northland College opened their season up with an 80-52 loss to UW-Superior, which felt like a kiss on the cheek after what Minot State did to them last weekend. The NCAA Division II Beavers took an 86-27 victory from Northland, who shot just 10-for-56 from the field in the contest.
Carnell Sheppard, who scored 20 points against Superior, leads the team in scoring (14 ppg).
Adrian Flores leads the team on the boards with nine rebounds per game. The Lumberjacks are certainly no strangers to Blue Devil assistant coach
Rob Robinson, who is in his first year with the Blue Devils after 16 seasons at Northland College. Robinson spent eight years as the women's team's head coach before directing the men's program for the past eight seasons. |

CLARKE UNIVERSITY (2-3): The Crusaders, who are members of the NAIA, come into this weekend with the most games under their belt. They have played in seven games already, two of which were exhibitions. After starting the season 1-3, Clarke got a win in their most recent game, a 66-60 victory over Ashford University.
Kris Brooks has been the workhorse for the Crusaders so far, leading the team in scoring (17 ppg) and rebounding (8 rpg).

Franz Winkler has been Clarke's primary deep threat, having already made 10 three-balls on the season. |
2012-13 Statistics
THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Eddie Andrist (154-156 at Stout, 404-347 overall) is in his 13th year as the coach of the Blue Devils, and his 23rd overall in the collegiate ranks. Andrist led the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Division III appearance five seasons ago when Stout advanced to the second round. Andrist coached at Mount Senario for 11 seasons and won three national championships. Andrist spent two stints coaching international basketball, working with the country of Qatar.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the nine-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-Whitewater.
THE 2011-12 BLUE DEVILS (9-16): Injuries and eligibility played a huge part in Stout's struggles last year, so they will look to improve upon those categories this year. They will have to do so, however, without
Steve Pax, whose season, and likely Blue Devil career, ended early last year with a knee injury. Aside from Pax, Stout, who finished their season with three straight wins, will return nearly everyone from their 2011-12 roster. The Blue Devils return all five players who started over ten games last year and return all 10 who appeared in 20 games.
Alex Oman, who sat on the bench, ineligible, for the season's first semester, will head up the offense. After returning after the break, Oman scored 18.4 points and pulled down 5.9 boards per game, leading the team in both categories.
Jarvis Ragland, who also missed games during winter break last year, brings back 11.5 ppg and will likely have a starting spot in the lineup. Running the offense from the point guard position will be senior
Erik Olson, who was nagged by injuries late last season. He still managed to lead the WIAC in assists, dishing out 5.4 per contest. Furthermore, Olson took care of the ball and had a league-best 2.16 assist-to-turnover ratio. Big men
Tim Butina and
Josh Kosloske will share time down low, as each bring back an average of 4.8 rebounds per game. Their efforts last season helped Stout boast a rebounding margin of +4.4, good for second best in the WIAC. Butina started 22 games, the most of any Blue Devil, and came off the bench in the other three. Kosloske, in his first year at Stout, played just 15 minutes per game but missed only two contests. Competing for a starting spot will be
Aaron Jenny,
Jay Higgins, and
Thomas Scholle-Malone. Jenny and Higgins did not miss a game all year, and Scholle-Malone only missed one. Jenny got the most starts of the three (14) while Scholle-Malone and Higgins started nine and eight, respectively. |
