Blue Devil gymnasts sweep past Hamline, Winona State to take John Zuerlein Invitational

MENOMONIE (February 3, 2023) - UW-Stout captured first and second on the balance beam, the floor exercise and the uneven bars on their way to finishing first of three teams at the John Zuerlein Invitational Friday, Feb. 3 at Johnson Fieldhouse.
 
Stout scored 187.175 points to 183.725 for Hamline University and 182.475 for Winona State University. The wins upps Stout's dual record to 4-4 overall.

Kiara Brown captured the top spot on the uneven bars with a 9.575 and also took first in the all-around with a 37.700. Alia Wilson finished second on the uneven bars with a 9.450.

Effie Ferguson won the balance beam with a 9.700. Gabrielle Winstead tied for second with Hamline's Madison Lieurance with a 9.350. Winstead also grabbed second place in the all-around, her first collegiate all-around, scoring a 36.625.

Isabela Krulich won the top prize on the floor exercise, scoring a 9.725, matching her own - and the team's - highest score of the season. Ferguson finished second with a 9.650, tying with the Pipers' Danielle Jaworski.

While the Blue Devils didn't take the top prize on the vault - that honor went to Winona State's Kennedy O'Connor with a 9.700 - Stout took four of the top six spots on the event. Gilliam Cummins was second (9.600), Winstead and Brown tied for fourth (9.450) and Isabela Krulich tied for sixth (9.375). 

Cummins was fourth on the uneven bars (9.375) and Wilson finished sixth on the beam (9.250). Brown also finished fifth on the floor exercise. 

Ashtyn Gagner scored a personal best on the vault (9.30). Heidi Benningfield scored a person best on the balance beam (9.050). 
 
The Blue Devils return to action Friday, Feb. 10 when they host UW-Whitewater for Senior Night in their home finale at 6 p.m.
