Blue Devil gymnastics edged by Whitewater

MENOMONIE (February 10, 2023) - UW-Stout put up their best score of the season against a Division III opponent, but came up just short to UW-Whitewater, 189.550-189.175, Friday on Senior Night in Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils tallied 189.175 points, but were edged by Whitewater by less than a half point, 189.550. The team's only higher score this season was when Stout competed at NCAA Division I University of North Carolina, setting a school record team score of 191.550. The Blue Devils' score was the eighth-best in school history.

The Blue Devils did tie the school team record on the balance beam, rolling up 48.100 points, tying the school record the team had set at North Carolina.

Stout swept the balance beam, taking the top four spots, lead by Isabela Krulich's 9.70, a score that was only a quarter-point short of her collegiate-best of 9.725. Effie Ferguson finished second with a 9.675 and Carlie Beatty, the Blue Devils' lone senior competing tonight, and Genevieve Czaplewski tied for third, along with the Warhawks' Tegan Haberstock, with a score of 9.625.  Gabrielle Winstead finished seventh with a 9.475.

The Warhawks captured the top spots in the three other individual events.

Gillian Cummins was third on the vault with a 9.450 and Anne Mielke tied for fourth with the Warhawks' Elaine Copeland with a score of 9.425. Alia Wilson led Stout on the uneven bars, placing fifth (9.450). Effie Ferguson scored a personal-best of 9.350 to place sixth and Camille Lindley scored a personal-best of 9.275. Ashtyn Gagner led the Blue Devils with a third place finish on the floor exercise, scoring a personal-best score of 9.625. Czaplewski and Ferguson tied for sixth with a 9.525.

Kiara Brown was the only competitor in the all-around, scoring a 37.175.

The meet was the final home meet of the season. In addition to recognizing Carlie Beatty for Senior Night, the Blue Devils also recognized senior Chloe Beatty.

Stout returns to action Friday, Feb. 17 when they travel to Gustavus Adolphus College for a 6 p.m. meeting with the Gusties.
