Volleyball Preview: Blue Devils Finally Home, Host Superior Tuesday Platteville Friday

THIS WEEK'S MATCHES: After nearly a full month on the road, the Blue Devils (9-8, 1-1 WIAC) open the home schedule this week with a pair of games. Stout will host UW-Superior (7-7, 3-0 UMAC), Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m., then will host conference foe UW-Platteville (13-4, 0-2 WIAC) Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.

PARKING: Parking on the UW-Stout campus is restricted during the business week. For games in Johnson Fieldhouse during the week, please plan to park in Lot 29. Do not park in Lot 4, which is a reserved lot for students that live in the residence halls.

THE BLUE DEVILS THIS YEAR: After dropping the first four matches of the season at the Trinity University Invitational over Labor Day weekend, the Blue Devils have won nine of their last 11 matches including a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Sandy Schumaer Memorial Tournament in Eau Claire. Junior Sidney Hoverman and Caroline Braun have been leading Stout on the attack; senior Jessica Barr has been solid on the block and the Blue Devils have been good at the service line. Hoverman is currently second in the WIAC in kills, averaging 4.02 kills a set, while Braun is averaging 2.32. . Freshman Maja Anderson has stopped up on the serve, leading Stout with 24 service aces and averaging 0.46, good for sixth in the WIAC. |  2022 Statistics

LOOKING AT UW-STOUT: The Blue Devils return 10 letter winners from last year's squad and five starters from 2021. Top hitters Sidney Hoverman, a 2021 all-WIAC honorable mention selection, and Jessica Barr return. Hoverman averaged 3.53 kills per contest and Barr 2.22. Barr and McCayla Thompson were Stout's top blockers, with Thompson averaging 0.55 and Barr 0.53 blocks per set. The Blue Devils will be looking to replace leading setter Lexie Nelson, who provided 80 percent of the assists, averaging 8.21 assists, put down 1.55 kills, averaged 2.94 digs and 0.47 blocks. Staci Meyer and Terrah Moshier alternated at the libero position and were among the team leaders in digs. Meyer led the team with 3.30 digs per set and Moshier averaged 2.90 digs. Anna Hansen saw action in 91 sets and Caroline Braun saw action in 62 sets. After a two-year absence, middle hitter Lydia Kneubuehl returns. Kneubuehl earned WIAC honorable mention selection in 2019 when she averaged 0.74 blocks per set and 2.45 kills per set.  |  Statistics

UW-SUPERIOR:  The Yellowjackets are 7-7 on the year. They are averaging 11.5 kills a set while hitting .154 as a team. Superior is led offensively by Alexie Pryd (3.46 K/S .180 hitting percentage) and Maiana Stark (2.44 K/S .186 hitting percentage).  Colleen Claude is averaging .483 assists and Jenna Anderson is averaging 4.24 digs a set. THE YELLOWJACKETS LAST TIME OUT: Three UW-Superior volleyball players tallied double-figure kills to lead the Yellowjackets in a 3-1 win over Bethany Lutheran at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Sept. 24. Senior Alexie Pryd and sophomore Maiana Stark each recorded 16 kills and junior Kaylin Plautz  added 11 as UWS moved to 3-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference with a 25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18 win over the Vikings. The win also pulled Superior's overall record to .500 at 7-7. Pryd collected 23 digs for a double-double while sophomore Jenna Anderson had a season-high 34 to pace the defensive effort. The freshman duo of Lizzy Schmidt and Colleen Claude totaled 40 of the team's 46 assists on the day, with Schmidt registering 22. |  Story and Stats

LAST TIME THEY MET:  UW-Stout bounced back from an opening set loss to win the next three sets on their way to downing UW-Superior 3-1 Oct. 26, 2021 in Superior.  The Yellowjackets took the first set, 25-21, but Stout  reversed the score with a 25-21 win to even the match.  Jessica Barr and Sidney Hoverman combined for 25 kills in the four-set win, with Barr putting down 13 kills and Hoverman 12. Emili Cain finished the night with eight kills and Lexie Nelson and Anna Hansen each had seven kills. Superior got nine kills each from Maiana Stark, Alexie Pryd and Kaylin Plautz.  |  Story and Stats

THE SERIES: Since the 2000 season, the Blue Devils hold a 25-6 lead in the series and have won the last five matches, including both match-ups last season. Superior's last win over Stout came Oct. 10, 2016, a 3-2 win in Menomonie. |  History



UW-PLATTEVILLE:  The Pioneers are 13-4 this season but 0-2 in WIAC play. They are averaging 2.63 kills a set while hitting . 173 as a team. Emma Carlson leads Platteville averaging 3.43 kills a set and is second in digs with 2.41 a set. Bri Gartner leads the team in dig per set with 4.77 and Sam Rosettii is averaging 8.42 assits per set. LAST TIME THEY MET:  UW-Stout got into the conference win column with a 3-1 victory at UW-Platteville Sept. 21, 2021, taking the match 25-20, 21-25, 27-25, 25-20. Sidney Hoverman had another big night, delivering a match-high 17 kills, which included eight kills in the 27-25, third set win and put down the final two points of the set. The third set was never separated by more than four points when Platteville took a 14-10 lead. Stout went on a 7-1 run, tying the match at 15 on Hoverman's kills, then jumping out in front on back-to-back kills by Jessica Barr and Caroline Braun. The Blue Devils increased the lead to three points, 20-17, before Platteville knotted the score at 21 each on a kill by Emma Carlson. Carlson gave Platteville a 22-21 lead, then an attack error by Stout made it 23-21. The Blue Devils pulled to within 23-22, but Carlson put Platteville at set point with a kill. Stout climbed back, with consecutive kills by Braun to tie it at 24. A Platteville kill put the Pioneers up by one, 25-24 and on the cusp to take the set when Lexie Nelson tied the game at 25 with a kill. With Braun serving, Hoverman delivered the final two points of the set, with assists coming from Braun and Nelson, respectively. Stout won the final set 25-20 after scoring the final five points of the set.  Braun served the final four points of the set after putting down a kill to make it 21-21 and get the serve back. She also had a service ace to give Stout a 23-20 lead. Hoverman and Nelson had the final two kills of the set and match. Stout won the first set, 25-20, but Platteville came back to tie the match with a 25-21 second set win. Braun finished with six kills and Nelson and Elise Banitt each had five. Barr finished with one solo block and matched a season high with five assisted blocks. Nelson tallied 27 assists. Staci Meyer had 23 digs. Carlson led Platteville with 16 kills. UW-STOUT COACH BEN STAUPE: Coach Ben Staupe (25-96) is in his first year as the Blue Devil head coach, coming to Stout after four seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division I Western Illinois University, which was preceded by eight seasons as the associate head coach at Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) member UW-Whitewater. Before joining the Whitewater staff, Staupe was the head coach at Rock Valley College, a junior college in Rockford, Ill. A UW-La Crosse graduate, Staupe also served a stint as an assistant coach at NAIA Viterbo University, as well as coaching club volleyball and high school volleyball.
