Baseball Preview: Doubleheaders with UW-Platteville will be played Monday and Tuesday in Mauston

THIS WEEK'S GAMES HAVE CHANGED:  UW-Stout (5-5, 0-0 WIAC) is still planning to open the WIAC by playing UW-Platteville (2-4, 0-0 WIAC), but the dates of the games have been changed due to projected cold weather and sustained winds.  The games were schedule to be played Saturday and Sunday, but have been moved to Monday, March 28 and Tuesday, March 29. The games will be played at the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston. 

STOUT LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils went 5-3 in their annual spring break trip to Fort Myers, Fla.. Stout defeated Bethel University, 7-5, Sunday, March 13. Lost to fourth ranked Eastern Connecticut State, 20-3, and lost 13-12 to Skidmore College, Monday, March 14; Stout defeated Saint Michael's College, 14-8, Wednesday, March 16; swept Lasell University 13-6, 11-0, Thursday, March 17; lost again to Eastern Connecticut, 24-9, Friday, March 18; and will close out the week with a 10-inning, 11-9 win over the US Merchant Marine Academy, Saturday, March 19. Down the road: Stout is scheduled to open their home season when they host UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3.

SZYKOWNY'S START: Charlie Szykowny overcame a 1 for 7 start at the plate in the team's doubleheader loss to Bethel University, March 8 but has been on a hot streak ever since. In the eight games in Florida, Szykowny batted .514, drove in 18 runs, posted a five-game home run streak and recorded his first collegiate win and first collegiate save on the mound in UW-Stout's spring break trip last week. Szykowny reached base safely in every game, stretching his on-base streak to all 10 games this season (11, including the final game of the 2021 season). In the final seven games of the spring break trip, Szykowny had multiple base hits in six games. Szykowny was 4 for 6 with three RBI against Skidmore, March 14. Also in the game, Szykowny began a consecutive streak of five games hitting a home run. Szykowny had a grand slam in their second game against Lasell University, going 2 for 3. Szykowny was 2 for 4 against fourth ranked Eastern Connecticut, 4 for 6 against Skidmore, 1 for 5 against St. Michaels, 3 for 4 in the first game against Lasell, 2 for 3 in their second game against Lasell, 2 for 5 against Eastern Connecticut and 2 for 5 against US Merchant Marines on the final day of the trip. Szykowny had multiple RBI in six games. Szykowny recorded a save earlier in the week against Bethel and recorded his first collegiate win, pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless ball, allowing two hits and striking out four in an 11-9 win, 10-inning win over Merchant Marines. For the season, Szykowny is hitting .455 with six doubles, one triple and five home runs with 18 RBI.  Szykowny was named the WIAC position player of the week and was selected as the NCBWA honorable mention hitter of the hitter of the week.  

SCHIRPKE JUST AS HOT: Schirpke has seen 27 at-bats in the seven games he has appeared in and has recorded 15 hits. Schirpke is batting .556 in the season, and he boasts two perfect games at the plate, with four hits in four at-bats against Lasell on March 17 and the US Merchant Marine Academy on March 19. Schirpke also homered against the Merchants Marines, his second of the season after he homered against St. Michaels on March 16. Against St. Michaels, Schirpke recorded three hits and six RBIs on only five appearances at the plate.

BLUE DEVIL OFFENSE:  The Blue Devils have showcased some high-powered hitting in the first 10 games of the season. Nine different Blue Devils are batting over .300 with 5 of them over .400. Those five are Schirpke, Joel Thimsen, Syzkowny, TJ Carlson, and Colin Hageman. Thimsen is batting .500 and has recorded four doubles and a triple. Carlson has only appeared at the plate 11 times, but has recorded five hits and also has been walked four times. Hageman has connected on 14 hits in his 34 at-bats giving him a .412 batting average. | Statistics

BLUE DEVIL DEFENSE: Justin Sedin has put up big numbers for the Blue Devils. Boasting a perfect fielding percentage, Sedin has recorded 38 pop-outs and 3 assists. Both TJ Carlson and Colin Hageman follow Sedin with perfect fielding numbers. Carlson has recorded 21 pop-outs and 5 assists with Hageman recording 22 pop-outs and 3 assists. Charlie Szykowny has also put up big numbers with 14 pop-outs and 34 assists on 52 catches. Szykowny leads the team, along with Levi Wilson with 4 double plays. Wilson has recorded 14 pop-outs and 19 assists. The two that have spent the most time on the mound for Stout this season have been Jace Baumann and Cody Urban. Baumann has recorded a team-best 9 strikeouts and allowed 13 hits (four doubles) in 12.1 innings pitched. Urban has recorded 5 strikeouts and 15 hits (dour doubles, one triple, two homers) in 12.2 innings pitched. Drew Buss is right behind Baumann, recording 8 strikeouts in his 7.2 innings pitched. The five Blue Devil Pitchers that have recorded wins so far this season have been Dak Doyle, Cooper Beving, Charlie Szykowny, Ethan Kjellberg, and Chase Higgins. Sykowny has recorded five strikeouts and 2 hits in only 3.1 innings pitched. Beving has only allowed one hit and one walk during his 4 innings on the mound.

UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT:  The UW-Stout Blue Devils ended their spring break trip to Florida with an 11-9 win in dramatic fashion in extra innings. The Blue Devils struck first on Saturday morning. Jack Schirpke continued his hot hitting with a 3-run home run to left field, scoring Jacoby Endreas and Joel Thimsen. The Mariners would answer in the bottom of the second with a run of their own to cut the lead to 3-1. In the fourth inning, TJ Carlson singled up the middle to score Schirpke to extend the lead to 4-1. After the Mariners cut the Blue Devil lead to 4-3, Charlie Szykowny and Colin Hageman hit back to back doubles, followed by a Thimsen single to extend the lead to 6-3. The back and forth affair would continue as the Mariners would tack on five runs over the next two innings to take the lead 8-6. In the eighth inning, the Blue Devils would load the bases in an attempt to get back in the game. Thimsen would come through with a single to cut the lead to 8-7. The next at bat, Schirpke hit a liner down the right field line scoring two more Blue Devil runners, to give the Blue Devils a 9-8 lead. The Mariners would once again score in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at nine. After a scoreless ninth inning, the Blue Devils found themselves in business in the top of the tenth. After a Thimsen walk and a Ryan Herbst bunt single, Schirpke doubled in a run to take a 10-9 lead. The hit was Shirpke's fourth hit of the morning and sixth RBI. Two batters later, Carlson would add an insurance run for the Blue Devils on a softly hit ball to the first basemen. | Game Story and Stats

SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE: The Pioneers have started off the season 2-4 as a team. The Pioneers return 2021 WIAC position player of the year Jonathan Kelso. The senior is hitting .333 to open the season, but last year lead the league in average (.445, 69-156), slugging percentage (.782, 18-2B, 4-3B, 9-HR), on-base percentage (.532), OPS (1.314) and stolen bases (27). Ross Kirst is leading the way for the Pioneers at the plate, recording 12 hits in his 25 at-bats including two doubles. The Pioneers have not hit a homerun yet this season, and only have one triple from Grant Mullins. Picking up the two wins on the mound has been Sam Hernandez. Hernandez has only allowed three hits and has recorded three strikeouts in his 6.0 innings. LAST TIME OUT:  Platteville finished on the unfavored side of two high-scoring games to wrap up its stint at the Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge in Pensacola, Florida. On Thursday, a seventh inning rally by Carroll University (5-6) and 16-10 win kept UW-Platteville from a Carroll sweep. Birmingham Southern (13-4) then defeated the Pioneers (2-4) 15-7 on Saturday evening. | Games and Statistics

LAST TIME THEY MET: The teams met six times at three different venues last year in an altered schedule during the pandemic, with the final two games considered non-conference games. Stout won five of the six contest. James Palmer pitched the first nine-inning no-hitter in school history in an 8-0 win in Menomonie, May 4, 2021. Stout won the next game, 8-7. Stout won both games at Platteville, May 7, 5-4, 5-1, and the teams split the next day back in Menomonie, this time at Wakanda Park, May 9. COACHES: Ben Kincaid (70-96) is in his sixth year as the Blue Devils' head coach with the 2022 season, following two years as a Blue Devil assistant coach where he worked primarily with the pitchers. Kincaid played collegiately at at Minnesota State University-Mankato, where he was a four year letter winner, playing in 149 games. He finished with a .339 batting average, 38 doubles (5th on MSU's career list), six home runs and 140 runs batted in (6th on MSU's career list). As a right-handed pitcher he sported a 14-8 record with a 3.45 earned run average and had 148 strikeouts in 172 innings pitched. Kincaid was named to the All-Central Region team three times in his career. An Eau Claire native, Kincaid played for the local Eau Claire Express. (Ben Kincaid was 65-91 to start 2022 season)


2021 BLUE DEVILS: Stout finished the 2021 season at 23-19 overall, 16-12 in the WIAC, and advanced to the WIAC tournament, where they played four games, heading into the final day of the tournament. | 2021 Statistics
