PLATTEVILLE (May 7, 2021) - UW-Stout did a lot of their damage in the late innings of both games to complete a four-game conference sweep over UW-Platteville Friday. The Blue Devils won the first game, 5-4, and took the second game, 5-1.
In the first game, Stout scored three runs in the top of the ninth to get the conference win at UW-Platteville.
Charlie Szykowny hit a two-run double down the right field line with the bases loaded to score two runs.
Drew Ries drove
Alex Jinkins home with the eventual game-winning-run with a single to left.
Ethan Kjellberg picked up his first win of the season, coming on in relief to pitch the last two innings, striking out two and not allowing a hit, run or walk, facing seven batters.
Szykowny was 3 for 5 with two RBI.
Hunter Merrill hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning and was 2 for 4 in the game.
In the nightcap, the teams each scored a single run in the first inning.
Alex Jinkins hit a lead-off home run to give Stout a 1-0 lead, but the Pioneers matched the score when Austin Pullara sliced an RBI single up the middle in their half of the inning.
It was goose eggs all the way around until Stout lit up the board in the eighth inning for three runs to make it 4-1, then added a single run in the ninth on a
Kasey Bass lead off home run. In the eighth,
Colin Hageman, Reece Vold and Szykowny drove in a run.
Jinkins went 3 for 5 to lead Stout. Szykowny, Bass, Vold and
Riley Boushack each had two hits. The Pioneers got three hits from Ross Krist and two hits each from Jonathan Kelse and Pullara.
Brock Burg worked 8.0 innings to pck up the win, scattering nine hits, but kept the Pioneers off the board for seven innings before giving way to
Alex Mahaz, who allowed no hits in the ninth. Burg struck out four.
The teams are scheduled to meet again Saturday, May 8 at 1 p.m. in Wakanda Park in a non-conference doubleheader.
