WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's)
THIS WEEK'S GAMES: Coming off a 10-point win over seventh-ranked UW-La Crosse, The Blue Devils (16-8, 7-6 WIAC) head into the WIAC Tournament Friday, Feb. 18 on an up-note when they host UW-Stevens Point (3-16, 0-12 WIAC) in a 7 p.m. first-round contest. Stout is the fifth seed in the tournament, Stevens Point the eighth seed. Stout defeated the Pointers twice this season, taking an 87-74 win in Stevens Point, Jan. 19, and an 88-78 win in Menomonie, Feb. 2. The winner will advance to the second round of the tournament, Tuesday, Feb. 22, at either third-seeded UW-La Crosse or fourth seeded UW-Whitewater.
Stout and Stevens Point have met twice in the WIAC Tournament, with each team capturing a win. The Pointers defeated Stout, 87-72, in the second round of the 2010 tournament. Stout defeated the Pointers, 78-70, in the second round of the 2006 tournament.
The WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) is Friday, Feb. 18 (First round), Tuesday, Feb. 22 (Second round), Thursday, Feb. 24 (Semi-final) and Saturday, Feb. 26 (Championship).
Ticket Policies
1. Ticket prices for all rounds of the WIAC postseason tournament are established at a minimum of $7.00 (adults), $3.00 (students with a valid student ID), and $4.00 (senior citizens–62 and over).
2. Tickets are to be sold and required for admittance into all tournament games until the beginning of the third period.
3. Press passes are to be issued at the discretion of the host institution but should be provided only for individuals who present valid press credentials, and are subject to limitations of space.
4. WIAC regular-season or lifetime passes are valid during the tournament.

5. Students are not permitted free or reduced admission, regardless of the campus policy.

A LOOK AT THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS
- Stout has played some high-scoring basketball, as they are currently 12th in the nation with 86.9 points per game.
- Stout's high scoring offense is highlighted by four Blue Devils who are scoring double digits on the season. Lovell Williams (18.3 ppg), Armani Tinsley (16.0), Jon Ciriacks (11.8), Brody Fox (11.8). Fox cracks the top five of the WIAC with 61-percent field goal efficiency (99 for 162). Luke Geiger is right on the edge of averaging double digits, scoring 9.8 per game. Lovell Williams had scored in double digits in 20 consecutive games, with a total 21 out of 23 double digit games. Tinsley has continued to find the basket this season, breaking double-digits in the past 16 games, recording a career-high 31 points in the win against Eau Claire. Tinsley also has recorded 62 assists on the season, placing him seventh in the WIAC with 2.7 assists per game. Williams and Tinsley aren't just offensive threats, they rank first and second in the WIAC in steals per game with 1.9 and 1.8, respectively. Both Ciriacks and Geiger broke 1000 career points. Ciriacks currently has 1065 career points. Geiger reached the 1000 mark Wednesday and has 1001 points.
- The 2021-22 Blue Devils broke Stout's single game scoring record which had been held since 1971 (the 1986 team tied the record). Stout defeated the visiting Greenville Panthers, a team known for their high-scoring games, 125-119. Brody Fox connected on two late game free throws to put this Blue Devil team into the record books. The next time out, the Blue Devils scored 108 points in a win over Finlandia.
- The Blue Devils experienced their first overtime game of the season in their first meeting against UW-Eau Claire. The last time Stout had an overtime game was in the 2018-19 season where Stout lost to McMurry University, 79-75. But this past matchup needed two overtimes to decide a winner. The last time the Blue Devils went into double overtime was in the 1999-2000 season where they lost to Stevens Point, 89-84.

CLIMBING THE LADDER
- Both Jon Ciriacks and Luke Geiger are making their way up the UW-Stout all-time scoring list. Ciriacks is currently 19th on the list, with 1065 points, while Geiger is 26th with 1001 career points. Ciriacks is currently tied for 10th on the 3-point made list with 140 and Geiger is right behind with 131 treys, ranking 11th. Ciriacks is 20th on the all-time rebounds list with 507.
BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- UW-Stout's Armani Tinsley scored 24 points as UW-Stout defeated seventh-ranked UW-La Crosse at Mitchell Hall Wednesday. Stout (16-8, 7-6 WIAC) led 34-33 at halftime as the teams battled tooth-and-nail, with seven lead changes throughout the first half. Stout outscored the Eagles, 42-33, in the second half with Tinsley scoring 14 of his points after the break. The teams traded leads six times over the first six minutes of the second half, with neither team holding more than a three point lead. La Crosse (19-5, 9-5 WIAC) led 42-41 at 15:34 when Stout went on a 10-0 run and the Blue Devils held a nine-point, 51-42 lead at the 11:36 mark. La Crosse tied the score at 59 apiece with 4:49 lead and took the lead a minte later, 63-61. A bucket by Lovell Williams tied the score at 63-63 and Tinsley gave Stout the lead for good at 2:17. La Crosse pulled to within one point, but Stout would make 9 of 10 free throws down the final 1:46 and Luke Geiger hit his 1000th career point with the last basket of the game. Geiger now has 1001 career points. Tinsley was 9 of 14 from from the field, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range and made all four free throw attempts. Jon Ciriacks scored 16 points for Stout and completed a double-double with a career-high 14 rebounds, as Stout won the rebound battle, pulling down 49 boards to La Crosse's 32 rebounds. The Eagles had four players in double figures, with Austin Westra and Torin Hannah both coming off the bench to score 12 points. Hannah also had 11 rebounds. Stout shot 28 of 57 from the floor for the game (49.1 percent), 7 of 23 from 3-point range (30.4 percent) and 13 of 20 from the line (65.0 percent). Stout shot 53.8 percent (14-26) in the second half. SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT
- The Pointers are led by Garrett Nelson with 14.7 points and Jake Buchanan with 12.3 points. Brennan Timm is averaging 5.0 rebounds per contest. Nelson is the team's leader in assists with 46. The Pointers opened the season with a pair of losses, then put together three consecutive wins in November. The Pointers have dropped the last 14 games. THE POINTERS LAST TIME OUT:
- Stevens Point fell behind early and the game was never close in a 94-53 home loss to UW-River Falls. s Brennan Timm led the Pointers with 11 points. Darrius Bolden was also in double figures with a season-high 10 points. Elijah Vander Velden led UWSP with seven rebounds. The Falcons jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Timm got UWSP on the board with an and-one nearly two minutes into the game. Jake Buchanan drilled a three and Bolden had four points, but UWRF poured it on for a 41-10 lead with 8:53 left in the first half. Bolden added four more points before halftime as UWSP was behind 55-22 at the break. Zach Mootz and Timm scored six-straight points to begin the second half. WHEN STEVENS POINT AND STOUT MET THIS YEAR:
- Stout defeated the Pointers twice this season, taking an 87-74 win in Stevens Point, Jan. 19, and an 88-78 win in Menomonie, Feb. 2.
- Stout overcame a halftime deficit and outscored UW-Stevens Point by 15 points in the second half to take an 87-74 win on Bennett Court in Quandt Fieldhouse Jan. 19. Stout had five players in double figures, led by Brody Fox's 19 points. Jon Ciriacks and Luke Geiger each scored 15 points, Armani Tinsley added 14 and Jackson Noll finished with 11 points. Drew Scott scored nine points and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds. Ciriacks and Geiger both collected double-doubles, each pulling down 10 rebounds. Stout out-rebounded the Pointers 48-25. The Blue Devils shot a blistering 70.4 percent (19-27) in the second half, hitting 19 of 27 shots from the floor. The Blue Devils also made 10 of 11 second half free throws. Stout finished the game shooting 57.9 percent (33-57). Stout dropped in 7 of 18 3-pointers. Stout trailed by as much as 11 points midway through the first half, but fought back to actually take a 31-30 lead with about three minutes left before intermission. The Pointers built up a four point, 36-32 lead with about two minutes left, but a bucket by Geiger cut the lead to 36=34 at halftime. The teams traded leads and battled to several tied scores for the first seven minutes of the second half. Jackson Noll gave Stout a 54-52 lead on a 3-pointer at the 13:40 mark. igniting a 12-0 run for an 11-point 63-52 lead at 10:22. The Pointers tied the score at 66, going on their own run and again the teams traded small leads. The Pointers led 71-70 at 4:59 when Stout caught fire again, closing the game on a 17-3 run, spreading the scoring among five players. Fox dropped in four free throws and a basket for six points. Tinsley added four free throws, Geiger scored a bucket and a free throw and Ciriacks and TYreese Alexander each had two points, The Pointers got 22 points from Garrett Nelson. - For the first time since the 2001-02 season, the Blue Devils recorded a season sweep over UW-Stevens Point. Stout defeated Stevens Point for the second time this season, 88-78, Feb. 2 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The last time Stout went 2-0 against Stevens Point was in 2001, where the Blue Devils won 72-61, and then 95-87. Stout continued their high-scoring style of play as they jumped out to a quick lead in the first half. The Pointers (3-12, 0-8) scored on the very first possession, giving them their only lead of the night, 3-0. Brody Fox and Jon Ciriacks got Stout on the board quickly after that, giving them a lead that they would hold for the rest of their night. Stout had five players in double digits, a common occurrence so far this season. Lovell Williams led the way with 22 points. Armani Tinsley finished with 15 points. Ciriacks finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Fox and Nick Jungel rounded out Stout scoring with 12 and 11 points respectively. Also having a big game was Kyle Williams, who dished out six assists in only 14 minutes of play. Stevens Point also had five players in double digits: Zach Mootz (19), Jake Buchanan (16), Elijah Vander Velden (13), Garrett Nelson (12), and Brady Wagner (10). Mootz also pulled down a team-best nine rebounds. As a team, Stout finished a near perfect 21-23 from the free throw line, they connected on 14 of those in a row. From the floor, the Blue Devils were 53-percent (28 for 53) while Stevens Point finished 45-percent (30 for 67). Stout put up lots of threes tonight (11 for 24), thankfully they were falling, which helped Stout maintain their lead. BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played what is believed to be their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH JIM LAKE
- Jim Lake (31-52) is in his fourth season in 2021-22 as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Lake came to Stout after 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State. The Bulldogs won the 2017-18 NCAA Division II national title.
- Lake served at Ferris State University for a total of 10 years, the last five years beginning with the 2013-14 season as the program's top assistant men's basketball coach. Lake had served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs in two different stints over the previous decade, working as a part-time assistant coach from 2011-13 before moving up to the full-time lead position, and as a volunteer assistant coach from 2003-06.
- During five seasons as the Bulldogs' top assistant coach, Lake helped Ferris State to four consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament championships and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, culminating in a 38-1 overall record and the 2018 NCAA Division II national title with a 71-69 win over Northern State University in March.
UW-STEVENS POINT COACH BOB SEMLING
- Bob Semling is in his 17th season at UW-Stevens Point in 2021-22 and has won four national championships with the Pointers. In 16 seasons at UW-Stevens Point, Semling has led the Pointers to two NCAA Division III national championships (2010, 2015), in addition to being an assistant on the back-to-back national championship teams of 2004 and 2005. Through his 16 seasons as head coach, Semling has compiled an overall record of 318-107, which includes a 169-56 mark in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. His .748 career winning percentage entering this season was the fifth-highest among active Division III coaches and ranks 45th all-time among all divisions for coaches with at least 10 seasons as a head coach. On January 11, 2014, Semling became the all-time winningest coach in UW-Stevens Point program history by recording his 201st career victory at UW-Superior. He won his 300th game at UWSP on Feb. 19, 2019, with an 89-61 victory over UW-Eau Claire in the first round of the 2019 WIAC Tournament. In 2015, Semling was named the National Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), D3hoops.com and Schelde Sports/DIII News. He also earned NABC and D3hoops.com Coach of the Year honors in 2010. Semling is a five-time WIAC Coach of the Year and has received the award in each of the last three seasons. Under Semling's direction, the Pointers have finished as the consensus No. 1 team in the country after both national championships. The Pointers appeared in the top 10 of the D3hoops.com poll for 42 straight weeks from 2007-2011 and were in the top 25 for 90 straight polls until the end of the 2011-12 regular season. UW-Stevens Point ranked in the top five in 10 of the 14 polls conducted in 2009-10 and was ranked in the top five throughout the 2013-14 season, including a stretch of 11 straight weeks as the top-ranked team in the country.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. The Blue Devils were picked to finish seventh in a preseason poll conducted by league coaches and sports information directors. UW-Platteville was projected to win the conference, with UW-Oshkosh second, UW-La Crosse third, UW-Whitewater fourth, UW-River Falls fifth, UW-Eau Claire sixth and UW-Stevens Point eighth.
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
