THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS:
- Freshman Raegan Sorensen is the Blue Devils leading scoring, coming off the bech in all 13 teams and is averaging 11.8 points. Sorensen has found her groove the last six games, scoring in double digits all six games, twice scoring more than 20 points and toyed with the school individual scoring record when she poured in 36 points against Aurora University. Sorensen is currently is shooting 53.6 percent (52-97) from the floor. But her game is not a one trick pony. Sorensen is currently fifth on the team in assists (1.6), first in blocked shots with seven and first in steals with 24. Mutch is leading the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game and rebounding with 6.7 points per game. Sorensen is currently ninth in the conference in scoring and is third in shooting percentage (.536).
- Anna Mutch is right behind Sorensen, averaging 11.6 points. Mutch is currently 11th in the conference in scoring, fourth in rebounding (6.5) and second in assists (2.9).
- Amanda Geisen has started all 13 games and is averaging 11.5 points after missing the shortened 2020-21 COVID season due to an injury. Geisen is second on the team in assists with 26 total and second on the team in rebounds at 4.7 boards. Lauren Arenz is ranked 10th in the WIAC in assists (2.4).
- Stout is out-scoring their opponents, 70.8-70.0 while shooting 45.1 percent from the field (333-739).
AN OVERALL LOOK AT UW-STOUT:
- The Blue Devils return two players who averaged in double figures last season - Anna Mutch (10.6) and Haylee Yaeger (10.9).
- Anna Mutch was an honorable mention selection to the All-WIAC team and was named the WIAC newcomer of the year. Anna Mutch opened the season with a bang, recording a double-double in the season opener, tallying 14 points and 12 rebounds. Mutch finished third in the WIAC in rebounds, averaging 7.1 boards. Mutch was 14th in the league in scoring (10.6).
- The Blue Devils return nine letterwinners from last season. Among those letterwinners are three starters - Lizzy Olsem, Haley Yaeger and Anna Mutch.
- The Blue Devils have one senior (Olsem), three juniors, five sophomores and seven freshmen.
- Last season, Haylee Yaeger scored in double-digits in four of nine games, and notched a career-best 20 points in the first game with La Crosse and made it a double-double with 10 rebounds, her second career double-double. Yaeger led the team in scoring with 10.9 points and was second on the team in rebounds with 5.4.
- Anna Mutch scored a collegiate-high 14 points in season opener vs. UW-River Falls, Feb. 3 and also scored her first double-double with 12 rebounds against the Falcons. Mutch matched her 14 points against UW-La Crosse, Feb. 17. Mutch was the team leader in rebounds, averaging 7.1 rebounds. Mutch finished third in the league in rebounds, 14th in scoring - but first among all freshmen - 10th in field goal percentage (31-69, .449), sixth in free throw percentage (31-40, .775), third in steals (15, 1.67/game), and 12th in minutes played (28.4).
- The Blue Devils return 73.7 percent of their scoring from last year, returning 47.4 points. As a team, Stout averaged 64.2 points per contest and gave up 75.6.
- The Blue Devils opened last season by sweeping UW-River Falls, then lost the next seven games.

- The Blue Devils were voted to finish sixth in a WIAC 2021-22 preseason poll conducted by conference coaches and sports information directors. STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
- A 17-point second half lead was too much for Stout to overcome, as they fall to conference-opponent UW-La Crosse 74-61 Wednesday in Mitchell Hall. Stout used a strong third-quarter push to a whittle down La Crosse's17-point halftime lead. But the Eagles were able to connect on their free-throws down the stretch to pull off the 13 points win. The Eagles used a second-quarter surge to pull ahead going into halftime. Stout struggled getting the ball in the basket only scoring 10 points in the second quarter on 27-percent shooting, La Crosse scored 24 points in the second quarter with 20 coming from within the paint, putting them up 41-24 at halftime. Stout came out of the break on their own hot streak. The Blue Devils outscored the Eagles 20-10 in the third quarter, closing the Eagle's lead down to only seven, 51-44 at the end of the third. The Blue Devils used the momentum to start out the fourth-quarter with a quick 6-3 run, making it a two-possession game at 54-50. With time expiring, the Blue Devils started intentionally fouling to try to keep time on their side. La Crosse closed out the game making 13 out of 16 free throws, pulling out the win 74-61. Raegan Sorensen didn't see much action in the first half due to foul trouble, but came into the second half and scored 10 of her 14 points. Sorensen helped fuel Stout's third-quarter push. Alison Murdoch and Amanda Giesen also contributed to Stout's scoring with 12 and 11 points. Giesen was also active on the defensive end with three steals. - UW-Stout faced a 19-point halftime deficit and got as close to nine points in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Devils lost their final non-conference game of the season, 69-53, at Gustavus Adolphus College on New Year's Day. Stout outscored the Gusties 19-13 in the third quarter and cut the lead to 57-48 on Anna Mutch's basket and two free throws by Amanda Giesen with 8:47 left in the game. While Stout would hit 7 of 8 free throws in the final stanza, Mutch's field goal was Stout's last of the game Gustavus scored 12 points to Stout's nine in the last 10 minutes. Stout held a couple of two point leads early in the first quarter, but the Gusties held a 15-10 first quarter lead. Gustavus led 44-25 at halftime and 57-44 at the end of the third quarter. Both teams had three players score in double digits with Mutch and Raegan Sorensen each scoring 13 for Stout and Giesen adding 12 points. The Gusties' Grace Benz led all scorers with 19 points. Syd Hauger had 17 points and Emma Kneifel 10. For the game, Stout shot 38.0 percent (19-50) from the field, 12.5 percent (1-8) from 3-point range and a school record 93.3 percent (14-15) from the free throw line, breaking the mark of .926 (25/27) against St. Scholastica in 2007. Giesen was 6 for 6 from the line. Sorensen was 3 for 3 and Mutch and Erin O'Brien both connected on their two free throw attempts. Gustavus shot 54.9 percent (28-51) from the floor, 36.4 percent (4-11) from beyond the arc and 52.9 percent (9-17) from the line. The Gusties out-rebounded Stout 27-22, with Benz pulling down eight boards. Sorensen and Haylee Yaeger each had four rebounds. SCOUTING UW-LA CROSSE
- The Eagles have no players averaging in double figures and are led by two-time first all-WIAC selection Emma Gamoke, who is averaging 9.9 points per contest. Kyah Steiner is averaging 8.5 points and Lexie Higgins is averaging 7.5 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds. Paige Schumann tops the lead in assists, doling out 40 for an average of 3.1 per game. As a team, the Eagles average 62.5 points and give up 52.9 points. The Eagles earlier this season dropped their first two conference games, a 64-48 decision at UW-Platteville and a 55-49 loss at UW-Oshkosh.

THE EAGLES LAST TIME OUT
- The Eagles defeated a solid Loras College squad, 70-53, Dec. 30, with a balanced scoring attack. Lexie Higgins and Kaiah Steiner led the Eagles with 14 points apiece and Casandra Wormley scored 10 points, all in the first quarter of the game. WHEN STOUT AND LA CROSSE LAST YEAR
- The Eagles captured both games last year, a 67-59 win, Feb. 17, 2021, in La Crosse, and a 75-61 win, Feb. 19, 2021, in Menomonie.
- Haylee Yaeger scored a career-best 20 points, 12 in the second half, but it couldn't push UW-Stout over the top as the Blue Devils lost a 67-59 decision on the road Feb. 17, 2021. Yaeger led all scorers by hitting 10 of 16 shots. In addition to her 10 rebounds, she had a blocked shot and two assists. Freshman Anna Mutch tossed in 14 points, matching her collegiate-high. - UW-Stout closed out divisional play with a 75-61 loss to UW-La Crosse Feb. 19, 2021, at Johnson Fieldhouse. Ava Kramer, Emma Gomoke and Gabbie Ritchie all scored 16 points to lead the Eagles, who led at the end of every period, including a 33-31 halftime lead. Stout got 15 points from Liz Oswald and 13 points from Anna Mutch, who also had a team-best eight rebounds. Oswald recorded seven rebounds. The Blue Devils forced 20 La Crosse turnovers, with most of them coming on Stout steals as the Blue Devils picked La Crosse's pocket 16 times. SCOUTING UW-PLATTEVILLE
- Maiah Domask is leading the WIAC in scoring and rebounding and the senior forward is posting a double-double for the season, averaging 17.4 points and 10.6 rebounds. Domask notched career-highs last semester when she poured in 35 points in a win over Luther College, Dec. 7, 2021, and pulled down 17 rebounds against Ripon College, Nov. 17, 2021. Sarah Mueller is averaging 10. 2 points. the sophomore scored a career-best 18 points against Marian University, Nov. 28, 2021. Taylor Gilbert is averaging 1.3 blocked shots per game, second in the league. As a team, Platteville is averaging 66.3 points and allowing 59.6 points.

THE PIONEERS LAST TIME OUT
- The Pioneers have not played since Dec. 29. A game with Lake Forest College Dec. 30 was postponed and the team was scheduled to host UW-Eau Claire Wednesday, but poor travel conditions forced a postponement. The Pioneers are currently riding a seven-game winning streak. After going 4-3 in the month of November and 2-3 to start the year, Platteville won all five games in December.
- The Pioneers dominated Edgewood College, Dec. 29, downing the Eagles, 67-39, at the UW-Whitewater tournament.
- Platteville guard Allison Heckert returned to her hometown of Whitewater to lead a trio of scorers in double figures in the Pioneers' 67-39 win over Edgewood College Dec. 29 The game was played on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as part of the UW-Whitewater Holiday Classic. The win was the seventh in a row for Platteville, the longest streak for the program since 2004. Heckert, who sat out nearly the entire second quarter in foul trouble, led the Pioneers on both ends of the court in the second half. Seven of her team-high 13 points game after the break. Defensively, Heckert led the effort to put the clamps on the Eagles leading scorer, Emma Klein. Klein entered Wednesday night averaging over 11 points per game before Heckert and teammates held the junior guard scoreless in the second half and to just three points overall. WHEN STOUT AND PLATTEVILLE LAST MET
- The teams did not meet last year for the first time since the 1984-85 season.
- The teams last met Feb. 8, 2020, with Stout taking a 76-70 overtime win in Platteville, one of their four overtime games during the 2019-20 season. Shannan Watkins scored a layup with three seconds left to send the game into overtime and the UW-Stout outscored the UW-Platteville 13-7 in the overtime period to take a 76-70 conference win over the Pioneers Saturday. The game was tight throughout the game, with the scored tied 18 times, including a 29-29 halftime score and at 63-63 at the end of regulation. The Blue Devils outscored the Pioneers 13-7 in overtime, spurred on by Katie Christopherson's six points in the extra time, all on free throws. Amber Fabeck hit a 3-pointer to open the period, and Watkins and Lindsey Johnson each scored a basket to lead a 7-0 run out of the gates. Watkins finished with a team-high 17 points. Fabeck had 16 points and Christopherson scored 10 points. The Blue Devil bench scored 30 points. The Pioneers' Kaylee Meyers scored a game-high 18 points. THE COACHES:
UW-STOUT:
- Hannah Iverson (41-34) is in her fourth year in 2021-22 as the head coach of the Blue Devils. (started the 2021-22 season at 35-27)
- Prior to becoming the Blue Devils' head coach, Iverson was the director of player development for women's basketball at NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, a position she began in October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson managed the program's operating budget, coordinated team travel, co-directed summer camps and clinics and handled all aspects of team film. She assisted in the set-up of on-campus recruiting and coordinating official and unofficial visits for potential recruits. Iverson held a similar position - director of basketball operations - at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
- Iverson spent two years at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women's basketball coach for the 2012-14 school years. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
- A member of the UW-Green Bay women's basketball team from 2008-12, playing as Hannah Quilling, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posted a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16. She led the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12, was sixth in steals per game and ninth in assists per game. She was also named to the Horizon League Honor Roll, earned the UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, was a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay University Leadership Award and the Patricia Hinckley Scholarship, and won the JoAnne Jennings Award in 2012.
- Iverson has gotten to 30 career wins faster than any other Blue Devil basketball coach, men or women. Iverson reached her 30th win in 42 games. Mark Thomas needed to turn around a women's basketball program that had won only two games the previous two seasons before he arrived. Thomas needed 75 games to reach 30 wins, but once he did, he kept building and became the winningest basketball coach in Blue Devil history, both men and women. On the men's side, Ray Johnson needed 59 games to reach 30 wins. Dewey Mintz needed 67 games to reach 30, John Muraski needed 63 and Eddie Andrist needed 59 games.
UW-LA CROSSE KAREN MIDDLETON
- Karen Middleton starts her sixth season as UW-La Crosse head women's basketball coach in 2021-22. She has led the Eagles to a 78-39 (.667) overall and 42-22 (.656) Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record in her first five years. UWL finished 5-5 overall and 4-4 in the WIAC in 2020-21, advancing to the league's tournament semifinals for the fifth straight year under Middleton and finishing 4-1 at home. The Eagles went 19-8 overall and 10-4 in the WIAC in 2019-20, finishing tied for second in the league standings while advancing to the league's tournament semifinals. UWL made its fifth appearance, and first since 2010-11, in earning an at-large bid to the 2020 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament. UWL went 11-2 at home during the 2019-20 season.
- The 15th head women's basketball coach in UWL history, Middleton spent two years as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois from 2007-09, helping lead the Illini to a WNIT appearance in 2007-08. She helped sign the No. 3 recruiting class in the country at Illinois. Middleton coached two-time All-Big Ten First Team selection Jenna Smith. Before coaching at Illinois, Middleton served as an assistant coach at Stanford University (Calif.) for 10 years from 1997-2007 under head coach Tara VanDerveer. The Cardinal won eight Pac-10 conference titles and earned 10 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including four Sweet Sixteens and three Elite Eights. Middleton coached three Kodak All-Americans and two Pac-10 Players of the Year. Prior to arriving at Stanford, Middleton was an assistant coach at Eastern Washington University for three years (1994-97) and for two years at South Carolina (1992-94). A member of the WBCA, Middleton was on the USA Basketball Olympic Festival Trails Staff in 1993 and the USA Basketball National Team Training Camp Staff in 1994.
UW-PLATTEVILLE KELLY MCNIFF
- The 2021-22 season marks Kelly McNiff's third season at the helm of the Pioneers. In her first season at UW-Platteville, the women's basketball team opened the season 5-0, was nationally ranked for the first time in program history, and won five consecutive games for the first time since the 2004-05 season. McNiff coached All-WIAC first team selection Maiah Domask who recorded a league best 12 double-doubles in the season. McNiff also coached senior Rachel Emendorfer who topped the confernce in steals during the 2019-20 season. Prior to UW-Platteville, McNiff served as lead assistant women's basketball coach at her alma mater, UW Oshkosh, for six seasons. During that time, the Titans racked up six 20-plus game winning seasons, five NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, six WIAC Tournament Championship appearances, and was a member of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association 2019 Staff of the Year under the leadership of head coach Brad Fischer.
CONFERENCE: UW-Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater. The Blue Devils were picked to finish sixth in a preseason poll conducted by WIAC coaches and sports information directors. UW-Oshkosh was tabbed to win the league. Whitewater was picked second, Eau Claire third, La Crosse fourth, Stevens Point fifth, Platteville seventh and River Falls eighth.
