Gymnastics Preview: Blue Devils at Winona Sunday, will also face Whitewater in afternoon triangular

THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION:  The Blue Devils (0-1) will be at Winona State, Sunday, Jan. 30 for a 1 p.m. meet that will also include UW-Whitewater. Stout piled up 187.025 points in their last outing, the second-highest point total in a season-opening meet.


A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS
  • The Blue Devils have one senior, four juniors, four sophomores and seven freshmen on their 2022 roster. | Complete 2022 Preview
  • Mikala Bugge is Stout's only senior. This is Bugge's sixth season with the Blue Devils. Bugge is a three-time All-American, and earned first team All-America honors in 2019 when she placed second in the all-around. Finished first on floor exercise at 2019 WIAC Championship. 
  • Carlie Beatty finished fifth on the uneven bars at the 2020 WIAC Championship. 
  • Mikala Bugge, Carlie Beatty and Chloe Beatty are the only returning Blue Devils to have competed at a WIAC Championship meet. 
  • The Blue Devils finished the COVID-19 shortened season at 3-1 last year. The season was shortened to four dual meets, with no WIAC or NCGA Championships.
  • The Blue Devils finished fourth at the 2020 WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional.
  • Stout won their first ever WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional title in 2019 and finished second at the 2019 NCGA Championship, their best-ever finish.

UW-STOUT LAST TIME OUT:
  • Stout scored the second highest season-opening score in program history, but were edged by UW-La Crosse, 189.450-187.075, Jan. 21. UW-Stout may not have won the meet, but the Blue Devil gymnastics team started off the 2022 season with a bang, scoring their second highest season-opening score in program history, posting a 187.075 to UW-La Crosse's 189.450 Friday at Johnson Fieldhouse. The score is the highest opening-day score of any conference team so far this season. The score is only second to the Blue Devils' 2019 season-opening team score of 187.575. The 2022 team is in good company. The 2019 team went on to win the WIAC Championship and finish second at the NCGA Championship. The Blue Devils had five freshmen in their line-up tonight, taking 13 of the 24 varsity spots.  Stout got a pair of second place finishes from freshman Effie Ferguson, who scored a 9.625 on the balance beam and a 9.525 on the floor exercise. Sophomore Kiara Brown was second o the uneven bars with a personal-best 9.625.  Brown was fourth on the balance beam with a personal-best 9.550 and scored a personal-best on the vault (9.425) to tie for sixth.  Isabella Krulich placed fourth on the vault (9.475). Genevieve Czaplewski scored personal-bests on the balance beam (9.525) and the floor exercise (9.375), placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Jenna Jones recorded a personal-best 9.075 on the uneven bars.   |  Game Story and Statistics

WINONA STATE: The Warriors  hosted Hamline University in the home head coaching debut of Stephanie Geislinger, Jan. 21.  As a part of the festivities, Winona State gymnastics honored alumnae and past teams of Warrior greats, who were subsequently treated to a Warrior win, as Winona State outscored Hamline, 179.725 to 176.975. In the WIAC dual meet victory, WSU earned coach Geislinger her first McCown head coaching win. Winona State was led in the meet by all-around performances from Kate West and Izzy Kropiwiec, who finished with scores of 35.775 and 33.725, respectively.  On the beam, Bryce Stoltz and West tied with the top Warrior score at 9.125, while the floor exercise saw Kropiwiec earn top honors at 9.475.  Hailey Bryant and Breanna Ho led the Warrior way for the best showings on bars, with Ho scoring a 9.225 and Bryant a 9.150. In the vault, Ho had a 9.300 mark, just edging teammates West (9.250) and Kennedy O'Connor (9.225). For Hamline, the top Piper performer was Madeline Sowinski in the all-around, scoring a 35.200.  As a team, Hamline won the beam competition, 45.300 to 44.525, while Winona State claimed the other three disciplines.   |  Game Story and Stats

LAST TIME STOUT AND WINONA MET: The teams would have last met at the 2020 WIAC Championship where Stout finished fourth (186.925) and Winona finished sixth (182.100). In the last dual, Stout set a team record on the floor exercise as three Blue Devil gymnasts scored personal best score on the event as Stout won the John Zuerlein Invitational Feb. 28, 2020. The Blue Devils won the four-team meet with a season-high score of 189.300. Hamline University was second (183.275), Winona State University third (182.725) and UW-Eau Claire fourth (181.600). The Blue Devils took the top three spots on the floor as Belle Ihde and Brooke Terry shared the top of the awards stand with a 9.800, a personal best for both. Shadae Boone also set a personal best on the event with a 9.750 to take third. Carlie Beatty also scored a personal-best with a 9.650 to place fifth. The Blue Devils totaled 48.450 on the event, topping the former team record of 48.350. Boone was the top finisher on the vault with a 9.575 and the Blue Devils went 1-2-3 on the uneven bars with Mallary Dick scoring a 9.500 for first, Terry a 9.425 for second and Charli Sizemore a 9.375 for third, a personal best.   Boone was fifth (9.300) and Olivia Rosenow was sixth (9.275). Britney was second on the balance beam with a 9.625 and was third on the vault (9.450). Carlie Beatty tied for third on the beam with a 9.475 and Chloe Beatty was fifth (9.450). Terry won the all around with a 37.750. The team score of 189.300 was the second consecutive score that exceeded 189. Last week, Stout scored 189.725 in a dual with NCAA Division II Lindenwood University. | Game Story and Stats | History

UW-WHITEWATER: The Warhawks defeated Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) and host Hamline (Minn.) Friday night in a WIAC tri-meet in St. Paul. The Warhawks tallied a team score of 185.025, more than three full points ahead of runner-up Hamline. UW-Whitewater finished 1-2 in the all-around. Faith Mylin  finished with a score of 37.550 and was followed closely by Emily North , who recorded a 36.125. The Warhawks started the meet on uneven bars and tallied a 46.400. Richella Velarmino  improved last week's score by more than six-tenths of a point with a 9.650 to win the event. Estee Flom and Taiya Stelmachowski tied for third with matching scores of 9.400. Mylin placed seventh with a 9.175, and Kelsey Kollhoff earned a spot among the top 10 with an 8.775. UW-Whitewater totaled a 44.775 on balance beam during its second rotation. Mylin and North led the team by placing third and sixth, respectively. Mylin scored a 9.300, while North collected a 9.075. Kollhoff placed seventh with an 8.975, Lauren Goble  finished ninth with an 8.775 and Morgan McEntire scored an 8.650 for 12th place. Mylin registered a 9.650 on floor exercise to place second overall and lead the Warhawks to a team total of 46.725. North scored a 9.450 to place fifth. Kara Welsh  tallied a 9.350 to place seventh, while Meg McGinley  totaled a 9.300 to finish eighth. Kollhoff rounded out UW-W scorers with an 8.975, good for 14th place.UW-Whitewater wrapped up the meet with a 47.125 on vault for its highest team score of the night. The team swept the top three individual spots as Welsh won the event with a 9.625, Rachel Lewellen  placed second with a 9.550 and Mylin finished third with a 9.425. North tied for fifth with a 9.325 and McGinley contributed a 9.200 to finish 10th overall.

In their season opener Jan. 22, Whitewater took the lead at the first rotation and didn't look back in a 187.575-182.400 victory against Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in a WIAC dual meet at Russell Arena. The Warhawks recorded their highest score of the meet on vault with a 47.650, including all six scores above a 9.350. Rachel Lewellen (placed first with a 9.650, just 0.025 off her career best score. Meg McGinley  and Welsh tied for second with matching scores of 9.575, tying a personal record for McGinley. Faith Mylin  and Kelsey Kollhoff  each tallied a 9.425 to tie for fifth overall. Kollhoff and Estee Flom tied for second on uneven bars with scores of 9.625 to lead UW-Whitewater, which scored a 46.725 as a team. Flom's performance was a career high. Mylin placed fifth with a 9.375, Taiya Stelmachowski finished seventh with a 9.075 and Emily North and Velarmino tied for eighth with matching 9.025. The Warhawks totaled a 47.225 on balance beam and swept the top four individual spots. Mylin and Morgan McEntire (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) tied for the top spot with a score of 9.575, good for personal records for both gymnasts. North finished third with a 9.550, McGinley placed fifth with a career-best 9.500 and Kollhoff recorded a 9.025 to finish seventh. UW-Whitewater wrapped up the meet on the floor exercise and scored a 45.975. Mylin won the event with a 9.725, and was followed by Welsh, who collected a 9.550. McGinley placed fifth with a 9.250, and North (8.775) and Kollhoff (8.675) finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Mylin took home the all-around title with a lifetime-best 38.100, topping her previous high score by nearly seven-tenths of a point. LAST TIME STOUT AND WHITEWATER MET: UW-Stout's Shadae Boone won two events as UW-Stout fell 187.825-184.425 to UW-Whitewater at Johnson Fieldhouse March 13, 2021.  The Blue Devil senior captured the vault with a score of 9.750 and took the floor exercise with a 9.650. Boone finished fifth on the uneven bars with a 9.150. Olivia Rosenow was second on the uneven bars (9.325). As a team, the young Blue Devils added more than three points from their first outing of the season two weeks ago. Stout scored 181.875 in the opener. Stout had freshmen in 12 varsity spots tonight. The floor exercise crew increased their team score by more than two points from the season opener, finishing with a score of 47.150. Freshman Kiara Bruening finished third in the all-around with a  personal-best score of 37.250. She also scored a personal-best on the floor exercise (9.50)  with a fourth place finish. Kiara Brown had her top collegiate score on the uneven bars, where she finished fourth with a  9.175. All told, the Blue Devils recorded nine personal-bests. Carlie Beatty had a personal-best 9.325 on the vault, while Genevieve Czaplewski recorded personal bests on the uneven bars (8.525) , the balance beam (9.450) and the floor exercise (9.150). Bridgette Allen had a personal-best on the beam (8.850). UW-STOUT COACH BECKY BEAULIEU:
  • Becky Beaulieu is in her 17th season in 2022 as the Blue Devil coach.
  • Under Beaulieu's direction, UW-Stout gymnasts have earned 57 All-American awards and Beaulieu has coached national champions on the balance beam in 2008, the floor exercise in 2009, the uneven bars in 2010, the vault and floor exercise in 2011, the floor in 2015 and the vault in 2019. The 2019 team won the WIAC/NCGA Midwest Championship and finished second at the NCGA Championship.
  • A UW-Stout gymnast has qualified and competed at the NCAA Division I regionals in 2009 at the University of Iowa, in 2010 at the University of Utah and in 2018 at the University of Minnesota.
  • Beaulieu, competing as Becky McDonnell at UW-La Crosse from 1997-2001, captured back-to-back NCGA floor exercise titles in 1998 and 1999. She established a since-eclipsed school floor exercise record score of 9.8. A seven-time NCGA All-American, she also garnered all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors nine times. The Eagles, for which she was a two-year captain, won two NCGA titles during her competing days.
  • Beaulieu has been named the WIAC Coach of Year three times - 2011, 2015 and 2019. She was the NCGA West Region Coach of the Year
  • In 2012, Beaulieau was selected to the WIAC All-Time Gymnastics Team as the conference celebrated their 100th anniversary.
  • Beaulieu was inducted into the UW-La Crosse Wall of Fame in 2016.
  • Kj Wheeler joined the Blue Devil coaching staff in 2019, but joined the staff full-time for the 2020-21 school year.

WIAC AND NCGA: The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) is made up of eight schools - UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stout, UW-Whitewater, Hamline University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Winona State University. These eight schools make up the NCGA West Region and are also members of the 14-school National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA). The six East schools are: SUNY-Brockport, SUNY-Cortland, Ithaca (NY) College, Springfield (Mass) College, Rhode Island College, and Ursinus (Pa) College. Each region holds their own regional meet to determine which teams and individuals will advance to the NCGA Championship. The championship is alternated yearly between the East and the West, with the West hosting the event generally during the odd numbered years.

DOWN THE ROAD:  The Blue Devils return home to face UW-Eau Claire, Friday, Feb. 4 for Senior Night.
