THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (5-11-0, 3-4-0 WIAC) is scheduled to play Northland College (3-9-3, 0-6-1 WIAC) for a home and away contest this week, hosting Northland Thursday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m., then traveling to Northland Saturday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. The last time the two teams played, Stout recorded a 3-1 win, scoring their three goals in the final 5-minutes, 28-seconds of the game. A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS:
- Last year's leading scorer and team captain Raphael Gosselin is leading Stout with 13 points (six goals and seven assists). Since the calendar was turned, Gosselin has scored a goal in each of the four games and has also accounted for three assists in 2022 alone. Gosselin was the WIAC/Kwik Trip Athlete of the Week after scoring a goal and providing an assist on the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime win over Bethel University. In the first 12 games of the season, Gosselin scored two goals and two assists and in the last four games he has scored four goals and three assists. Gosselin has a team-high three power play goals and has two of those power play goals in the last four games.
- Junior transfer Dylan Rallis has also been huge for Stout, with 11 points (five goals and six assists). Freshman Caleb Serre is next on the list with 10 points, as he leads Stout with nine assists and scored his first collegiate goal against St. Olaf College last week.
- Other leading scorers for Stout are Peyton Hart with five goals and three assists for eight points, and Logan Nelson with four goals and three assists. Matt Dalhseide has seven points with two goals and five assists.
- Alec Skar scored his first goal of the season, the game winner against Bethel University, and has four assists. Riley Enderle has scored four goal and Kobe Keller has dished off five assists.
- Cole Beckstead, Alex Nagel, Matt Flodell, and Landon Lushanko have each added two goals.
- Gosselin leads the team in power play goals with three. Stout has gotten power play goals from newcomers Matt Flodell, Peyton Hart and John Jebamani, as well as Peter Verstegen and Logan Nelson. Rallis scored shorthanded Nov. 5 against St. Scholastica, Stout's first shorthanded goal since the 2018-19 season. Alex Nagel scored shorthanded against UW-River Falls, Dec. 10, and Hart scored shorthanded against River Falls, Jan. 11.
- Stout has five goalies this season and freshman Tyler Masternak has snared four of Stout's five wins. The freshman is posting a GAA of 3.28 with a saves percentage of .902. Zack Cloutier has picked up that other win, and matches Masternak's GAA with 3.28 and a saves percentage of .909. Brennan Kitchen has a GAA of 3.84 with a saves percentage of .868. Masternak and Cloutier each have been credited with an assist on a goal this year.
- The Blue Devils finished the abbreviated 2020-21 season at 4-7 overall. The Blue Devils averaged 2.75 goals per game and gave up 3.6 goals. Stout is 6-29 (20.9 percent) on the power play and 7-27 (74.1) on the penalty kill.
- The Blue Devils return their top seven scorers and nine of their top 10 scorers from last season.
- Raphael Gosselin returns as the team's leading scorer from last season, leads the team in points, posting four goals and seven assists for 11 points.
- Kobe Keller led Stout in goals scored with five, of which two were power play goals, and added a pair of assists. Logan Nelson, a three-time all-WIAC honorable mention pick, returns after scoring four goals and three assists. Matt Dahlseide and Peter Verstegan each scored two goals and four assists. Defenseman Joey Petronack had a goal and five assists as a freshman, earning honorable mention honors. Alex Nagel was just behind Gosselin in assists, dishing off six. Alex Stuckert had a goal and three assists, while Brandon Connett had two goals, both power play goals, and an assist during his freshman season.
- Twenty different players scored at least one point last season.
- The Blue Devils return two all-conference goalies in Brennan Kitchen and Zack Cloutier. Kitchen earned honorable mention honors in 2019-20 and Cloutier earned first team honors last season when he set a single season record for goals against average (GAA) with a 1.63 mark. Tyler Masternak joins the Blue Devils' goalie crew that also includes returners Brady Meyers and Marco Zink.
- Stout returns five players who have earned All-WIAC honors at least once throughout their career. Senior forward Logan Nelson has been selected WIAC honorable mention all three years. Junior goalie Brennan Kitchen was a honorable mention pick in 2019-20. Senior forward Raphael Gosselin earned first team honors last season, as did sophomore goalie Zach Cloutier. Sophomore defenseman Joey Petronack was an honorable mention selection last spring.
- The Blue Devils have seven seniors, eight juniors, eight sophomores and 11 freshmen on their 2021-22 roster.
BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- Stout split a pair of non-conference games, downing Saint Mary's University, 6-3, Jan. 14, but then dropped a 4-3 decision to St. Olaf College, Jan. 15.
- UW-Stout scored four second period goals and went on to down Saint Mary's University, 6-3, Jan. 14. The Cardinals' scored 1:45 into the second period to break a 1-1 tie, but the Blue Devils tied the game four minutes later to take advantage on the power play when Peyton Hart scored and Hart's goal began Stout's offensive onslaught ast the Blue Devils would score the next four goals. Noah Carson scored at 12:57 with assists by Dylan Rallis and Raphael Gosselin, Mikey Butcher scored with an unassisted goal at 16:56 and Matt Dahlseide completed the second period scoring at 18:44 with assists by Hayden Clark and Caleb Serre. Gosselin, last week's WIAC player of the week, gave Stout a 6-2 lead midway through the third period, taking assists by Logan Nelson and Rallis. The Cardinals Travor Paradise got a consolation goal at 16:08. The teams matched goals in the first period. The Cardinals' drew first blood and scored quickly when Nick Kiemel scored only 1-minute, 56-seconds into the game. Stout tied the game when Nick Bowlin scored his first collegiate goal at 16:15 of the first, with assists from Brandon Connett and Noe Perez. Six different Blue Devils scored goals and Bowlin, Carson, Butcher and Dahlseide all scored their first goal of the season. Gosselin and Hart each scored their fifth goal of the season. Seven different Blue Devils provided assists, with Rallis and Perez each tallying two assists. Clark's assist marked his first collegiate point. - With the score tied at 1-1 midway through the first period, St. Olaf College ran off three consecutive goals but had to hold off UW-Stout in the end in a 4-3 decision Jan. 15 at the Fanetti Community Center. The Oles' Ashton Altmann scored just over a minute into the game, but Stout (5-11-0) answered back four minutes later when Raphael Gosselin scored on the power play, with an assist by Matt Dahlseide, to knot the game, Gosselin's third power play goal of the season. The Oles scored twice over two minutes in the period, scoring at 10:41 on a shorthanded goal by Eric Brown and two minutes later on an even strength goal by Jonathon Young to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room. St. Olaf stretched the score to three goals, 4-1, at the 13:39 mark in the second on goal by Evan Shoemaker. Stout pulled to within 4-2 at the 14:19 mark on a goal by Dahlseide, his second goal of the weekend. Dahlseide was assisted by Peter Verstegan and Noah Carson. The Blue Devils made it a one-goal game with three minutes remaining when Caleb Serre scored with an extra attacker on the ice. Assists went to Alex Nagel and Carson. Zack Cloutier absorbed the loss after coming in for an injured Tyler Masternak, who made the start. Cloutier recorded 18 saves to four for Masternak. SCOUTING NORTHLAND COLLEGE
- Northland (3-9-3, 0-6-1 WIAC) is led by Connor Evans, who leads the team in assists with eight. Evans also has one goal, placing him at the top of Northland's scoring with nine points. Right behind him is Ty Brown, whose three goals is matched by Cameron Coutre to top the Lumberjacks. Brown also has two assists for a total of five points. Cole Woodliffe, Daniel Chartrand, and Jackson Breton all have two goals, Woodliffe and Chartrand notching three assists and Breton two. Rounding out the scoring is Eddie Gallagher, who has dished off five assists. Josh King has two goals.
- In goal for the Lumberjacks this season has mostly been Chris Curr (2-7-1). Curr has recorded a GAA of 2.72 and a save percentage of .925. The other Lumberjack win is credited to Viktor Wennberg (1-1-1), who has a 1.72 GAA and a save percentage of .951. Taylor Unruh has seen action in two games and is 0-1-1 with a GAA of 4.40 and a saves percentage of .865.

THE LUMBERJACKS LAST TIME OUT
- Northland took a 2-0 lead and went on to a 4-2 win over Finlandia University, Wednesday, Jan. 19, in a non-conference contest in Ashland. The Jacks took the Lions by storm early on and outshot the Lions 27-14 through the first two periods. Josh King scored the lone goal in the opening period and Cameron Coutre added one more in the second period to give his team a 2-0 lead. The Lions answered with a goal of their own about five minutes later to put the score at 2-1. Near the end of the second period a Lions defender slipped in his own zone and Parker Severson picked up the loose puck and put it into the back of the net to restore the Jacks two goal lead. The third period consisted of a lot of penalty killing for both teams. Only 14 seconds into the period the Lions had a player disqualified sending the Jacks on the power play. The Jacks wasted no time with the advantage as Coutre picked up his second goal of the evening moments later to extend his team's lead to 4-1. Both of Coutre's goals were power play goals. Chris Curr got the win in net for the Jacks and made 19 saves.
- Northland had a game with St. Scholastica postponed Jan. 15.
- Northland College battled to a 2-2 tie with the Gustavus Adolphus College Gusties Jan. 14. After trailing 1-0 after two periods, the Jacks tied the game up almost immediately at the start of the third with a goal from Ty Brown. After several chances for both teams, Cameron Coutre gave the Jacks the lead with 1:09 left to play. The Gusties, however, responded by battling through the final seconds, and were able to score with only 5.6 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. WHEN STOUT AND NORTHLAND LAST MET
- UW-Stout saved all of their scoring for the final 5-minutes, 28-seconds of the game as the Blue Devils defeated Northland College, 3-1, in Stout's conference opener Nov. 18. The Blue Devils were scoreless through the first two period and the vast majority of the third period until Peyton Hart took a pass from Raphael Gosselin and Kobe Keller at 14:32 of the third period to knot the score. The Lumberjacks (2-4-1, 0-2-0 WIAC) had scored midway through the first period on a power play goal by Ty Brown and looked like they were going to make the lone goal stand up. But only 28 seconds later, the Blue Devils took the lead when Dylan Rallis punched in the puck from just in front of the crease, giving Stout their first lead of the night at the with five minutes left to play Alec Skar and Mikey Butcher provided the assists. Stout had a couple of opportunities to put the game away around the 18-minute mark after going on the power play when shots by Alex Nagel and Kobe Keller went wide. Northland had no choice but to pull their goalie while playing short and Stout's Peter Verstegen made the Lumberjacks pay, scoring the empty net goal with eight seconds left in the game, with an assist from Hart. Hart finished the night with a team-best six shots on net, while Rallis finished with five shots on frame. Hart also won 11 of 15 face-offs throughout the night. UW-STOUT COACH MIKE MACDONALD
- The 2021-22 season marks Mike MacDonald's (9-18-0) second season as the Blue Devils' head coach. (began the 2021-22 season at 4-7-0)
- Before coming to Stout, MacDonald coached four seasons at Curry College, near Boston, Mass. Prior to joining Curry, he spent a year as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.
- MacDonald graduated from the SUNY Geneseo with a degree in Business Administration in 2007. During his time at Geneseo, the team posted a record of 67-33-11, winning the SUNYAC Championship in 2005 and 2006. Over his collegiate career, MacDonald appeared in 109 games and is among the school's all-time leaders in goals (61) and points (120).
- MacDonald played six seasons professionally. He began his professional career in the Central Hockey League, spending one season each with the Odessa Jackalopes and New Mexico Scorpions. The following four seasons he played primarily for the Southern Professional Hockey League's Huntsville Havoc. While there he served as the team's captain for three seasons. In 2010 he scored the game-winning goal to give Huntsville its first ever SPHL Championship. Over his career, MacDonald appeared in 338 professional games with 213 points on 84 goals and 129 assists.
- MacDonald is a native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.
NORTHLAND COLLEGE COACH SEAMUS
- Seamus Gregory was hired as the Head Coach of LumberJack Hockey in July of 2014, he is the fourth Head Coach of the program and holds the most wins in the 23 years of Jacks Hockey competing at the NCAA level. 2021-22 will mark his eighth season at the helm in Ashland. Since Gregory and his staff's hire they have completely revamped Jacks Hockey. Through their strong recruiting they have clinched three playoff berths in the past six seasons. Over this time men's hockey has transitioned from the NCHA (Northern Collegiate Hockey Association) to the powerhouse WIAC (Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). In five seasons in the NCHA, Men's Hockey had many accolades with players achieving all-conference, all-freshmen, and all-academic status. Gregory was also named the NCHA Coach of the Year for the 2016-17 season. In the Jacks first season in the WIAC they also had a recipient on the first team all WIAC and two honorable mentions. Since the addition of Gregory's staff on Ellis Avenue they have also moved on numerous student athletes to professional hockey in North America and Europe. Prior to Northland, Gregory spent three seasons (2011-2014) at Williston State College in northwest North Dakota, where he was the architect of Teton Hockey. Gregory was the first ever coach in Williston State Hockey history. In a short three years at Williston State, Gregory led the program to a three Region XIII titles, twelve All-Americans, three NJCAA Frozen Fours and two National Championships (2013, 2014). The two titles are the first and only National Championships in any sport in school history. Gregory is no stranger to Midwest Division III Hockey; his collegiate coaching career began in 2008 at Lake Forest College where he spent 3 seasons. (2008-2010) as the first assistant/recruiting coordinator under 32 year mid-west Division III Hockey Coach Tony Fritz. Gregory also spent one year as the interim Head Coach (2010-2011). Before joining the college hockey, Gregory spent 5 years (2003-2008) at St. Mary's Catholic Prep School in Lynn, Massachusetts where he taught United States History and coached hockey and tennis. Aside from his passion for collegiate hockey, Gregory has also taken a vested interest in growing and promoting the game at the youth level. NC Hockey has become a staple in the City of Ashland and Ashland Youth Hockey under Gregory. He is also actively involved with USA Hockey and in his spare time works hockey camps and clinics throughout the United States with national hockey governing body. Gregory also serves as the Athletic Director at Northland and lives with his family in greater Ashland.
THE CONFERENCE:
- UW-Stout is a member of the six-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls. Northland College joined the league last season. UW-Eau Claire was picked to win the league title, according to a preseason poll conducted by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Stevens Point was chosen second, UW-River Falls third, UW-Superior fourth, UW-Stout fifth and Northland sixth.

The three helpers mark the first time two UW-Stout goalies have gotten an assist in the same year since the team returned to varsity status 20 years ago...When Spencer Viele was awarded an assist against Bethel University, Nov. 6, 2015, he was not the first Stout goalie, and won't be the last, to get an assist. Since the Blue Devil hockey program returned to varsity play during the 1996-97 season, seven goalies have earned at least one assist. STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: The Blue Devils were last mentioned in the USCHO.com poll Nov. 19, 2018 and received a single vote in the Dec. 3 rankings before dropping out...the last time the Blue Devils were mentioned was with one vote in the Oct. 31, 2016 poll...The last time Stout was mentioned was Jan. 18, 2016...The Blue Devils returned to the USCHO.com Division III poll, Jan. 18, 2016, after nearly a four year hiatus, receiving five votes. A tie and two straight losses the following week dropped the Blue Devils out of the poll. Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but dropped out. HOME ICE: The Dunn County Board in 2015 approved renaming the Dunn County Ice Arena the Fanetti Community Center in recognition of Marilyn Fanetti's contribution to fundraising efforts undertaken by the Menomonie Youth Hockey Association to remodel and add to the arena at the Dunn County Recreation Park. Fanetti donated $370,000 to the project and asked that the hockey arena and new community room be named for her family.
