Austin Gaby sets school record with 7-under 65 at Twin Cities Classic

Twin Cities Classic

RAMSEY, Minn (September 25, 2021) - UW-Stout's Austin Gaby was having a nice round. And then he turned the corner and torched the course on his way to a single round school record 65 on the first day of the Twin Cities Classic at The Links at Northfork.

With Stout starting on the back nine, Gaby opened up and played one of the course's longest hole, the 490-yard, par-5 10th hole, even. Gaby went one-under on the next hole, the par-4, 426-yard 11th hole. Gaby settled in, playing the next two holes even, before hitting eagle on the par-5, 557-yard 14th hole, then hit his only bogey of the day on the par-4, 403-yard 15th and went on to finish the back nine with a 34.

Then the fun began on the No. 1 hole, a par-5, 525-yard leadoff hole as the Verona native collected the first of three consecutive birdies. Gaby was even on No. 4, a 3-par, 190-yard, then birdied No. 5 to go 6-under.

Gaby wasn't done, playing the next three holes even before going out with his fifth birdie of the front nine, on the par-5, 514-yard ninth hole to finish Day One of the three-day tournament at a 7-under 65.

Gaby finished the day with six birdies and an eagle, playing 17 of the holes at even or better. Gaby broke the school record of 67 set by Dylan Kline at the Edgewood Culvers' Classic, Sept. 2, 2017. Gaby's previous collegiate best was a 70.

As a team, Stout was in sixth place out of 21 teams after the first day with a 298. St.John's University is leading the field with a 292.

Noah Benbow, Hunter Neumann and Dalton Anderson were tied for 45th with a 77. Matthew Johnson was tied for 72nd with a 79, Sam Klobucar was tied for 87th with an 81 and Matt Mueller was tied for 91st with an 82. Anderson and Mueller are playing as individuals.

The teams will play the second day of the Classic at the Elk River Country Club, Sunday, Sept. 26, then conclude the meet at the Wayzata Country Club, Monday, Sept. 27.
